Hakuna Matada - Joyful June

Hi team! Happy Monday!

Anyone else for our mini team meets? Make sure you check in so I can get an idea of the numbers. The post for the meets is here. If I missed your name, let me know.

Kim - Forgot to ask how your weekend trip was. Crazy amount of humidity and heat! You can practically do your hot yoga outside. I was hoping that the rain last night would cool things down but no such luck. It felt like a sauna walking out the door this morning.

Elizabeth - Thanks for repinning my pictures! That's so cool that it's getting repinned :) I think you can make the cake as cupcakes. They will still be pretty dense but it saves you the work of cutting them into squares. You will need to adjust the baking time I think. Congrats on the run! You're getting back into it gradually :) Let me know the name of the 5K and I'll add it to the list for you.

Emily - WTG on the 6 miler! That's a tough call between WDW and Tinkerbelle. I wish Tinkerbelle was in May or at least not so close to January. I think there are a few WISHers who are doing both but I couldn't afford the airfare or the time off work with both being so close to each other. Let us know what you decide!

Lynn - The Tour de Chili sounds awesome! With all the hills you're describing, it sounds like they're making you work for that chili! Are there multiple chili vendors? Do you have to pay for each chili you eat?

Dave - Congrats on the new addition to your family. I saw the pictures and Nemo is really cute! How old is he? He looks a bit bigger than a pup. Good job on the walk (especially in the heat) and then working out afterward.

Stacey - I'm like Lynn. I work on the posts in Outlook or Word and then cut and paste over. I've had that happen to me once too many times.

Robbie - You're super busy! How do you fit in the training? Do you get a super long weekend coming up in July?

I think it all depends on how many miles you're use to running and whether you're injury prone. I can't do a program with a lot of mileage because something is bound to get tweaked LOL

I don't need to know for sure until July but I'm just trying to get organized. Another option is to book an ADR around the same time that we're going and that way you can opt out if your plans change. When we get to the restaurant, I usually just tell the hostess that we're all sitting together even though we have separate reservations.

AFM - I had a pretty good weekend! I went to beach volleyball on Friday. We won two games and lost one. The team we lost to was a mother and son team. They were insane! They were so serious about the game, it just wasn't fun playing with them. Usually if someone misses a ball or hits it into the net, everyone has a laugh but these guys were so serious. Then there was a ribfest across the street. It's basically a group of ribbers who get together and sell ribs, chicken, pulled pork etc. I posted a few pictures on my FB page but it was late and so I couldn't get that many pictures on my phone before it got dark.

Saturday my right ankle was feeling funny. I skipped reluctantly skipped my 10 miler. I spent the day running errands and working on my blog instead. I managed to get one of my blog posts onto a site called Foodgawker. They have to approve your pictures so I was surprised to get in on my first try. I really like the food photos they have on their site so I was flattered that mine made it in :) I only have one photo in my gallery so far but hope to have more soon!

And I have a recipe up for whole wheat blueberry buttermilk pancakes here. It's a mouthful to say but worth it ;) LOL

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Any team meets for DL? For the Chili Fest, the ticket to get in was $10. (that was included in our bike ride fee), for that, you got to taste about 50 different chili makers, and vote on your favorite ones. There were vendors there if you wanted to buy something else to eat, or beer and soda (of course). At each tasting, you got a 2 oz cup half full with chili, we would split a cup, and we only tasted about 15 different ones, (the news said 50 chili makers, we would have guessed about 25). The proceeds of the Chili Fest went to local Chugwater Non-profits, like the fire department, the ambulance, etc.

Kim - Don’t work too hard!

Elizabeth - Good luck getting back into racing!

Emily - So, which race did you decide on?

AFM - We got for a 11 mile ride yesterday, today we headed out early because it is going to get very hot here - mid 90’s - (hot for here) - so we got in 13 miles today. Wind again picked up as soon as we got out on the bikes. Yesterdays chore was to (finally) work on my scrapbooking area in the basement - as it was hot, it was a good day to work in the cool basement. That is only half done - I pulled all my junk out of the area, cleaned it up, put down a carpet remnant, and hung old quilts on the cement wall to make it feel warmer in winter. Now I have to go thru all the stuff I pulled out, organize it, and get it back in the space and still have room to work! Then I have to start catching up on the scrapbooking, I am only about 10 years behind! LOL

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Last weekend was hot and humid out here in Chicagoland as well. I got my 5.7 mile run in on Saturday and felt pretty good about that. My Sunday Long Run of 7.5 miles was a little more challenging because of the increased level of humidity that morning (even at 6:30am).

Last week was the beginning of my marathon training program. I feel like my endurance level is less now than it was in April so I have to get myself back where I want to be as I also get myself acclimated to all this heat and humidity.

Last week mileage was 17.9 miles. The road to Chicago is ON! I am going to need your support because this effort is going to be major for me. And the challenge with my schedule -- especially in July -- is already evident to me. There is going to be a lot of out-to-town training runs during July (how do you plan a Long Run in a city you don't know very well?).

Vicky Nemo is 6 years old, very well behaved and smart. He is very much the lap dog also. Even with those short legs he loves to run and jump. They are herding dogs. He can sit, stay, come, roll over and beg on command. We don't know his history since he was a rescue at PAWS. Sally was picked out of about 150 applications to be the best parent.

My day has gone well so far, 5 total miles this morning with speed intervals, then 2 hours of PT with lots of stretching and strengthening exercises and a steroid patch on my achillies. Tonight I'm doing the pool Zumba class with Sally.

Everyone have an awesome day.

Dave:hippie:

Anyone signing up for Pasta in the Park during race weekend?

Kim- Hope you are doing well too. I am very glad we are spared the central Canadian heat that you guys are getting.

Vicky- Yeah, I always make sure I have time for runs. I never watch TV, and I think working from home helps a lot too…easier to sneak off for a run! And yes, super long weekend coming up with Canada Day stat Monday, vacation day Tuesday and July 4th on Wednesday!
Congrats on making it onto foodgawker!

Elizabeth: Thanks for the input on my plan. I think a lot of the naysayers of my plan did not realize/appreciate that while my first marathon is my main focus right now, I am also kinda preparing for Goofy too…thus the back to back weekend long run. Some of the things I didn’t like in some of the established plans were: weekday runs exceeding 6-7 miles (just don’t have the time), no speed work (I love doing it!), they start off too easy (why follow a plan that starts with a long run of 8 miles when I am already doing 15+?), long runs do not exceed 20 miles, and no day for cross training. So I made my own plan that met everything I wanted, but that still used the principle of ramping up long run and total weekly mileage for two weeks, then scaling back for a week.

Emily: Good luck deciding your race, can’t go wrong either way. As someone who just bought some Disney stock, I say do both lol

Dave: I see that you have had Achilles issues, mine is a bit stiff after he weekend (first time it has ever acted up). Any strengthening exercises you find particularly helpful?

Rick: I am sure your endurance has not really lessened. I go through the same thing when the weather gets hot…and got discouraged until I realized it is totally a warm weather thing. It is the effort, not the speed or pace that counts when the mercury rises. Let just be thankful our races are in October.

Lynn- Chili Fest sounds awesome. Good luck getting caught up with your scrapbooking.

AFM- Well week 1 of marathon training is in the books. With the exception of a sore Achilles tendon, I think I got along pretty well. I added a couple miles on Wednesday’s easy run because I ran a 5K race on Saturday when I was supposed to do 5 miles. I think going very hard for the race, plus a pickup game of soccer that got a little more competitive than it should have, plus Sunday’s 14 mile long run contributed to the sore Achilles. Was pretty some all day yesterday and all last night, but feels a bit better today.

As I said, I entered my 2nd ever 5K race on Saturday. A local IT firm put it on and the course went through downtown Charlottetown (the capital of the Island I live on). Anyways, I am very happy with the result: 21:34, my other 5K in May was 22:59. I placed 40th out of 246 entrants. The prospect of a sub 20 minute 5K now went from “never in a million years” to “hmm, you never know”.

Have a good week all
Robbie

Robbie all the stuff for calves applies. I do the calf stretches for both of the calf muscles as well as the calf raises and balance exercises.

I taught the dog to fetch and now he has hidden the ball.

Dave:hippie:

Good Morning Team!

Dave - Nemo sounds smart if he hid the ball when he was tired of fetching!

Rick - For your out of town plans, check maps for large parks, or maybe try to find (google) local running clubs - they seem to exist in most cities - and contact them for info on a long run route. Or maybe post something on these boards or FB and local folks can help also.

Robbie - Your personalized training plan sounds good.

AFM - Tomorrow we are planning on riding bikes into town in the morning for our local “Ride to Work Day”, the cycling club is sponsoring a “breakfast” at one of the local banks, we will ride into there, maybe have some “breakfast”, then ride back home. It will be a long ride, so today we might just take it easy - who knows what Scott has planned!

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Good morning, everyone,

Robbie: Good luck with your training. You know better than anyone when to ramp up or ease off your schedule and it makes sense that you'll need more if you are running more that weekend.

Lynn: So relieved to hear that someone else is behind in scrapbooking. Of course, mine are my daughters' baby books so I'm feeling extra guilty. I recently gave them Smash journals for gifts and bought one for myself. Those journals seem to take a bit of the pressure off of designing a full page because the design is already started for you.

Dave: I agree with Lynn that you have a smart dog.;)

Rick: I agree that posting a thread here looking for some good runs is a great place to start. mapmyrun.com is also a great place to look as well as www.usatf.org/routes/. I'm using those to map a course for me while I'm next on vacation.

Vicky: How is the ankle today?

AFM: I ran this morning and then did some hill work. A bit frustrated in my time but I'm going to keep plugging along. The race nightmares continue but I'm certain that they'll ease off after my 5k in July or when I see some improvement in my training.

Good morning team!!!!! Geezz this heat is super crazy!!!!!! We got a little break last night when a storm went through temps not including the humidex went from 33 to 22 C sorry my Amercian friends not sure on the conversion but d*** hot. However, it was short lived and killer hot by bed time again.

Vicky: Where was the ribfest? When I saw your photos I tried google and nothing showed up. We LOVE!!!!! ribfests. Weekend in Niagara was just the night but we had a good time and we all came home with money from the casino so good weekend!!!!

Lynn: Sounds like the heat is hitting you guys as well. So what is the next adventure you and Scott have planned?

Rick: WTG on starting your marathon training!!! Be careful in that heat!!!!

Robbie: WTG to you also on starting your marathon training!!!! Take are of that achilielles!!

Hi everyone I missed I know I keep missing people.....uugghhhhh

Zumba tonight hope it isn't too hot, the room we use if the same room they use for hot yoga they wait about 30 mins till the class starts but there won't be any cool air outside to cool down the room. Eatting is going really well but exercise not so much, my knee has been bothering me so have been walking but no intervals.

Have a super day everyone!!!

Hi team! Happy Wednesday!

Kim - It was in The Beach across from Ashbridges Bay. There was almost no one there. I was surprised because every time I've gone to a ribfest, they've been packed. It was nicer going at night because, it was cool. There should be one coming up next week at Centennial Park in Etobicoke. They usually hold that one over the Canada Day weekend. Then there's also one in Markham and then Scarborough.

I'll make you some ribs if you have a pool day LOL I can't believe how hot it is today! Insane!

Hope your knee feels better soon! Do you know what happened to it? Have fun at zumba and be careful with it :)

Elizabeth - My ankle is feeling better today! Thanks for asking :) I had a treatment done on it yesterday. My chiro was explaining that it's not actually the ankle but there are muscles in your leg that keep your ankle from inverting or rolling and that's what I have a problem with. So he's given me lots some band exercises to do to strengthen the area. I'll get your 5K added once I'm done posting. Did you say you signed up for the full in January? I can't remember

Lynn - How was Ride to Work day and why is breakfast in quotes LOL We had a similar event in Toronto a few weeks ago. They gave all the cyclists a pancake breakfast at City Hall. I gave up on scrapbooking a while ago because it was too hard to catch up. But I always had a lot of fun doing it :)

Dave - Sounds Nemo is a smart guy! He's lucky to have you and Sally as parents :) How was the pool Zumba class?

Robbie - Thanks! I'm hoping to get more of my photos onto Foodgawker! Congrats on your 5K! That's a fantastic time! How do you think you tweaked yoru achilles?

AFM - It is crazy hot in the city today! The temperature is 86F (30C) but with the humidity it feels like 100F (38C). I walk about 400 meters to the bus from my house and I was sweating and hot by the time I got to the stop. The heat wave is suppose to continue for another day. I think if that's the case, I'll be running indoors tomorrow. No sense in going outside.

I did an hour at the gym with my chiro yesterday and we did some ankle strengthening exercises and then he followed up with a treatment. He noticed that my right leg was slightly longer than my left. He said most people have that. I think the difference was only a few millimeters and he said it wasn't enough to impact my walking or running.

I'm back at the gym tonight - no baking or anything like that planned because it's just too hot to turn on the oven.

Have a great day everyone! Stay cool! :wave2:

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - See below for “Bike to Work Day” report, breakfast was in quotes because it is usually just packaged muffins etc. - it was much better than I remember.

Kim - It was really hot here last 2 days, cool today, but will be back in the 90’s over the weekend. I think the average temp for this time of year is 75F. For the summer, we have mostly bike rides planned, this weekend is “Tour de Prairie” which is a local ride, you can ride up to 100 miles (I will probably try for about 40 - 50). Some of the rides are in Colorado, and we sometimes stay overnight, depending upon how far south and what time they start in the morning. Hope the knee feels better!

Elizabeth - I have bike ride nightmares, that I will get lost and end up 20 miles off the route, in the dark, etc. I do not know why, I have never had any problems with the routes.

AFM - Today was “Bike to Work Day”, we woke up to heavy fog, wind and misting rain! It was about 49F, when it has been about 60. We delayed for a bit, then decided to truck the bikes into town, and ride to the bank from the local park (about a block away). It started to clear up a bit, fog lifted, but still misty. We rode the bikes from the park to the bank. Breakfast was pretty good, bagels and cream cheese, fruit, yogurt, cereal bars, juice drinks, coffee, and yes, the normal packaged muffins. We had a bagel and cream cheese. We visited for a bit, then rode the long way around the park back to the car - 2 miles. We came back home and had some more coffee to warm up. It is still cloudy, but hoping for a real bike ride a bit later today.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Awesome! Sorry work is monopolizing your life right now but hopefully they will show their appreciation for your hard work.

We will have a great group gathered for the Mickey in 2013! The more, the merrier! WDW is just looking better and better!

Week 2 results are in and I'm down 2 and Dad stayed even.

Saturday and Monday were very hot days, so I mostly did walking with some running thrown in.

Tonight I walked, since I was out with some friends last night. They're calling for a slight chance of rain and hopefully cool it down a little bit in the next couple of days.

Happy Thursday, everyone,

Kipp: Congrats on the weight loss! Hope you got a bit of rain to help with the heat.

Vicky: Yes, I'm in for the full! Thanks for adding it to the calendar.

Kimberly: Yay for signing up! Will your family come with you or are you traveling solo? How is DH's job search going?

Lynn: Hope the weather cleared up and you got that bike ride in! I tried your muffin recipe with blackberries and the muffins baked up beautifully. I plan to make a batch, along with Vicky's recipe, with apples next.

Kim: Do you know what's wrong with your knee? Is this a recurring injury?

AFM: I'm renewing my gym membership today. The weather has been so nice that I let it lapse. However, today is 96F (36C?) with 70 percent humidity; the rest of the week is forecasted to be the same. Sounds like we are all in a heat wave!

Regarding race weekend: Anyone doing Pasta in the Park? Remind me where you are staying? While I know I won't be able to keep up with you nor will I start in the same corral, I'm looking forward to meeting up prior and (fingers crossed) at dinner that evening. That is, if I can still move!

Good Morning Team!

Kimberly - Don’t work too hard!

Elizabeth - Glad the recipe worked for you!

Kipp - Good job winning week 2!

AFM - We did get out for 25 miles on the bikes yesterday afternoon, and the dogs got their walk. It is getting hot again, it was really nice to have a cool day yesterday - by Saturday it will be back up to 95F!

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Kimberley: WTG on signing up for Mickey!!!

Vicky: Thanks for the info on the Ribfest this weekend, I think we are going super early Sat got to be home for the France/Spain soccer game :)

Kipp: Awesome to you and dad on the weightloss.

Kim

:cheer2: Weekend Racers :cheer2:

Just me racing this weekend... yay me

June
23 - Toronto Pearson Runway Run 5K, Toronto ON - Vicky

Good Morning Team!

Kim - With our bad knees, biking is now our main activity!

AFM - We decided to join the local bike club in their ride yesterday evening. It was going to be a "short ride" because of Saturday's activities (Tour de Prairie - can be 100 miler), but we logged 18 miles. The speed was much faster than I usually ride, I really worked hard to keep up - but I did keep up, although at the back of the pack, 3 others dropped off before the end of the ride. It was 8pm by the time we got back home, late dinner.

Pixie Dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!
