Hakuna Matada - Joyful June

Hi everyone! Quick check in to let you know that I'm still here! Just finished reading to catch up, it's been a while. :(

Exercise and eating is going good!

Hope everyone has a great weekend, will try and post more soon.

Hi gang! Happy Friday! Who's going to see 'Brave' this weekend :)

Kim - Have fun at ribfest this weekend!

Lynn - Looks like the weather is really warm where you are too. Stay cool! Can I have a copy of the recipe too? Good job on the 25 miler! The Bike to Work breakfast sounds good. We had an event like that in Toronto last month I think. They gave all the cyclists a free pancake breakfast at City Hall.

Elizabeth - How's your back feeling? I might be looking into getting a membership as well. I didn't think it was going to be this hot so quickly. I'm thinking I'll stay at Pop since that seems to be where most people are staying. I hadn't thought about Pasta in the Park. How much is it? You never know about who's going to keep up with who. We're so far out and there's a ton of room for improvement... Or in my case, injuries LOL Let me know how the apple muffins turn out :)

Kipp - Congrats on the loss! I'm hoping the weather here cools down as well. I know it's officially summer but it's gotten really hot really fast.

Kimberly - Of course! Like Rick said, the more the merrier! I hope work slows down now that we're getting into the summer.

Rick - How are you liking the marathon training group?

AFM - I got in two work out with my chiro during the week. Did the usual weight training, metabolic exercises, ankle rehabbing and deadlifting. He also shared some protein recipes with me so if I have time this weekend, I will blog about them.

I've got my 5K out at the airport tomorrow. It's on a closed runway but you can see the planes taking off and landing on adjacent runways. I'll post a race report when I'm done. I'm just going for fun so I might run with my iPod.

I did a blog post on running in the hot weather. If you guys have any tips you want to share, come on over and post them here. I do have some readers who are new runners and I'm sure they'd appreciate any advice you guys have :)

Have a great weekend! :wave2:

:cheer2: Weekend Racers :cheer2:

Just me racing this weekend... yay me

June
23 - Toronto Pearson Runway Run 5K, Toronto ON - Vicky

Have a lot of fun out there! Running on a runway sounds like no shade to me, so stay hydrated! And if you run down any of those planes, maybe you can get a free flight! :rotfl:

As for the marathon training program, I have only run with them onve so far because the previous weekend I was in a race. It was pretty ncie. The people seem friendly and one of the pacers ran with me the whole time (even though I was the last person to finish the 7.5 miles -- it was really humid and my legs were not happy I had run 6 miles the day before). But it was all good. I think I will like traiing with the group. There are several others who are training for the Chicago Full as their first marathon so i will have some company.

I saw Brave last night. I thought it was good, not great. I wasn't sure about the story-line going into the movie, so I think that kind of threw me. I was astonished that there were over 20 minutes of previews & commercials before the start of the actual movie (well, the start of the "cartoon" before the movie). I decided that I'm not sold that going to see a movie is worth the extra $6 that they're charging, so I saw it in the Digital 2D projection theater. It still looked FANTASTIC.

After that, I saw Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, which I also thought was good. This was in a standard film projection theater and I was so surprised to be able to notice how bad it looked compared to digital projections! The trailers before the movie were awful, full of scratches and dust. Even spliced up, which I hadn't seen in years! Since it was it's first night, the film for the actual movie was in good shape, but I just had the overall impression that it just wasn't as sharp and clear as Digital Projection. Now that AMC has been bought by that Chinese company, I've heard that they'll begin to switch all of their more used theaters into all Digital Projection... and unfortunately, close or sell those that aren't doing as well.

If I'm really bored next weekend, I might go see Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter at the matinee or something.

I'm not all that excited about The Amazing Spider-Man and Dark Knight Rises, but I'll probably end up going to see them. All of the advertisement that I've seen for Spider-man has almost burned me out of wanting to go see it at all. With that much advertisement, I'm thinking that it may be a really big disappointment.

Wreck It Ralph I know I'll end up going to see. The preview of it on Brave didn't really show anything more than we've seen in the trailers that are already out.

It's rather sad that I think one of the most exciting upcoming movie releases that I'm looking forward to is the 3D release of Finding Nemo. The trailer for this was also attached to Brave and looked REALLY good, even in just normal 2D digital projection.

The one I'm most looking forward to, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in December. This trailer was longer than anything I had seen so far and it looked INCREDIBLE!

I has cooled down a little bit here, so I'm hoping to get more running in than walking on today's outing. Today will also be the first outing with the new Foot Pod that I got for the Garmin, so I'll be able to get an idea what kind of cadence I do when I'm not really paying attention to it :)

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Sent recipe to you via PM. Yes, it is hot here!

AFM - Yesterday we did a short ride 9 miles, today was “Tour de Prairie”, it was cool for the start of the bike at 6:30 am, after a pancake breakfast. I went 43 miles, Scott went 50 - it is basically straight out one road, turn around when you feel like it, and come back into town. You can ride as far as 100 miles. There were burgers waiting for us after the ride. By the time we got back for burgers - 10:30, it was already 95 degreesF, so we opted out of the rest of the festivities in the park and just came home. That puts my total milage for the week at 127 miles.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Amazing mileage!!!!! You're gonna need new tires pretty soon!

Good Morning Team!

Rik - I hope I do not need new tires in the near future!

AFM - We will probably do a short bike ride today, it is going to be hot again, and we will have to get out shortly after breakfast. Dogs did get their walk this morning.

Pixie Dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Vicky: Please add another race to the schedule for me (yes, I am crazy!). It is the "RoadKill 5000" on August 12th in Johnsburg, IL -- a local 5K race put on by the Roadrunners Club I joined. It is a fun race with an awesome medal. :lmao:

Kimberly: Well, it looks like it will be a 100+ mile month for me in June. I am at 94.2 miles today so I should hit around 105 by the end of the month. I know you were really busy at work this month. Did you reach your 100-mile goal for June?

AFM: I volunteered at my first race today... the "Run for your Heart 5K". It was a local race sponsored by the Roadrunners Running Club and Centegra Healthbridge. I got to place the course markers, set up the water station, and set the mile markers out (and remove them later). It was pretty cool.

It was in the upper 70s for the race with about 200 runners of all ages. The course was flat and fast. The overall winner finished in 16 minutes or something ridiculously fast. The coolest thing was an older gentleman who walked the entire course with a cane. A group of volunteers walked with him the last 1/2 mile to the Finish Line, all clapping and cheering him on (me included). Talk about courage and mental toughness! :thumbsup2

When I am in a race and feeling tired, and negative thoughts creep into my mind, I am going to remember that man's effort and determination. He achieved his goal! So shall I!

Hi Team.

We had a play date for Nemo at the park today with our friends big Nuffy, Gibson. We are getting them used to each other because they will see each other at a lot of races. Nemo is really fitting in with our life style.

This was a no training day but lots of stretching and my calf and tendon exercises. I didn't do anything yesterday but a 40 min walk with Sally and then work so I was quite stiff today. The stretching needs to be a daily thing.

I cooked steaks on the grill for lunch with steamed vegies and steamed potatoes on the grill. Very good lunch but neither Sally or I have a lick of energy now.

The track and field olympic trials are this week. I have lots of buds competing in the race walk trials and I'd love to go and cheer for them. But at least I can send them encouragement on facebook and emails.

One of my races was cancelled that I normally start the yeaar with so now it looks like July 28th will be my first competitive race.

Have a super Sunday y'all.

Dave:hippie:

Rick another story like yours about courage and toughness. In 2007 at the National Senior Olympics race walk 5K, there was an older fellow who took a tumble after tripping on a man hole cover. He went down hard but jumped right back up and with blood streaming he shooed off the race people who ran over to help. He finished and the next time I saw him was when he got up on the platform and had the gold medal, for the 90 to 94 age group, placed around his neck.

He looked like the mummy he was so bandaged up but he was every bit the winner.

Dave:hippie:

Good Morning Team!

Dave - Sounds like Nemo is fitting in nicely!

Rick - Sounds like you had a great time volunteering.

AFM - We got in 10 miles on the bikes yesterday, it will be hot all week, we will have to get out early if we want to ride comfortably.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hi team! Happy Monday!

Lynn - Thank-you for the recipe! I will be sure to give it a try soon :) What did Scott decide to do with the frozen bananas? Catch any flying monkeys LOL WTG on the 10 miler!

Dave - Sounds like it was a good lunch! What's the name of your race? Do you want me to add it to the calendar? When I had a dog (many, many years ago), he never liked to play fetch much. He use to take the ball or stick and make me chase him around to get it back. I guess he was teaching me to fetch

Rick - WTG on all the mileage! I had hoped to put in more myself but my cranky ankle is giving me grief again. Sounds like it was fun 5K and volunteers make the difference for races.

Kipp - I'm looking forward to 'Total Recal' and 'Dark Knight Rises'. I really like Christian Bale and the whole Batman franchise. There's another indie film coming out called 'Safety Not Guaranteed' which looks pretty funny too :) I might try to see 'Brave' this Tuesday if I have time.

AFM - I did my 5K on Saturday morning. The humidity was gone and the temps had cooled down a lot. It was basically perfect for running. I did a race report and if you're interested, you can find it here.

My ankle issues are starting up again. I feel like if it's not one injury, it's another. :sad2: This year is a bit tricky because so many of the races I've committed to are travel related. So for now, I'm going to keep my mileage low ... which means I have to keep an eye on my eating a lot more closely.

Other than the race, the weekend was pretty quiet. I got to go to a baking supplies store that was close to the airport and I picked up a few different baking pans, cupcake wrappers and a digital thermometer. I'm such a geek

Oh ... and who wants to help me think of a title for the July thread. I'm sticking this at the end just to see who's actually read my entire post :rotfl: I'm kidding!! Hope everyone is having a great day!

Happy Monday, everyone,

Vicky: I love that medal! My back is doing better; thanks for asking. I began a 10 minute Pilates core strengthening program that I do every morning that seems to "reset" my back and undo whatever I did to it the day before. I was considering returning to PT but found that the Pilates stretches are very similar to what the PT had me doing. So far, so good and much cheaper than a PT visit. As for a thread name, we could follow "Joyful June" with "Sweaty July" or "Sticky July" or, better yet, "Pass the BodyGlide Before My Thighs Catch on Fire July." :rotfl:

Rick: Congrats on the mileage!

Dave: Happy to hear that Nemo is settling in so well.

Lynn, Kim, Kipp, and everyone else: Hi!:wave2:

AFM: The race nightmares have lessened. I've backed off of all the marathon podcasts that I've been listening to on my runs and I think that helped. I had a nice 6 mile run on Saturday and a good 45 minute run this morning. I started today's run at 5 because it was 80F by 7. It's going to be a long summer. Stay cool, everyone!

Hey team just a quick check in since I am already at work.

Hope everyone is doing great. Will catch up later.

Going to my first "official" interval training class tonight at our local well not local about 25 mins away from me but I wanted to check it out.

Have a great day all

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Scott made a banana bread in the bread machine, it used only 2 of the bananas, and is not as dense as the banana bread I make normally, but it was good. Take care of the ankle! You always come up with something good for thread titles! (See - I read to the end of the post)

Kim - Have fun at interval training tonight.

Elizabeth - Glad the race nightmares have lessened. I agree, summer looks like it will be hotter than normal.

AFM - In spite of the heat, we went out for 18 miles yesterday, we figured we needed some heat training for the MS ride in August. Guess we will get some more heat training today, as it was 70F at 6am.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hi, everyone,

Vicky: How is the ankle today?

Hi to Kim and Lynn! I hope everyone else is training well and feeling well.

AFM: I'm going to switch up my training schedule for the marathon. I'm moving my long runs to Wednesdays. I telecommute on Wednesdays so my mornings are rather easy that day. Weekends, however, are a pain because of all of the girls' activities and on T/Th, I have to be in the office early. I also need to add more running time than Galloway's Disney training plan. Tell me what you think about this:

Sunday: Cross Training/Easy Run
Monday: Training Run
Tuesday: Rest day/Easy Walk
Wednesday: Long Run
Thursday: Rest day/Easy Walk
Friday: Training Run
Saturday: Cross Training/Easy Run

My only problem is that I can't do a long run on Thursday (since I'm in the office early) if I miss Wednesday. I could probably make Friday or Saturday my long run if that happens. Anything I'm not thinking of with this plan?

Hi everyone!

Lynn - LOL :) I know you do! I was just joking around :) I love banana bread! Sounds yummy! Did you ever end up making the SPAM donuts?

Kim - What's an interval training class? Is that for running or is it a group fitness class? Have fun regardless!

Elizabeth - Sold! I'll use your last one as a thread title! I'm glad that the pilates workout is helping your back. That way you can save the PT visits for when you really need them. I also remember that my PT use to tell me to try and sleep on my back because that was one of the best positions but that's really hard.

AFM - I've booked my flights to Chicago for the Rock and Roll half next month. I waited to the last minute because the airfare had been more than a flight to Orlando. I wasn't going to pay more than $400 return. On the weekend, the price dropped to $330 so I figured I'd book on Monday. I ended up being really busy at work and didn't have a chance to book until the afternoon. Then I noticed there was link to a 50% off sale so I jumped on that and managed to get my flights for just under $230. Here's the funny thing about flying in Canada, the taxes are more than the flights themselves  Oh well.

I'm back in the gym tonight and hopefully will get to see 'Brave' afterward.

Hope everyone is having a great day :wave2:

Looks like we're posting at the same time. The ankle is okay. It's annoying to walk around on it sometimes. I describe the pain/irritation like the sensation you get after you hit your elbow/funny bone on something. I'm going to the running store at lunch to see if I can get any kind of ankle support brace.

I think your training schedule looks good - I like that you have two potential days for a LR. That's important in the winter when there's bad weather or even just for unexpected events. I would add in a day of complete rest - no exercise, walking, cross training etc. but that's just me :)

Looks good. My only suggestion is to make Tuesday a Rest Day with no workouts and running. Two reasons... 1) the body needs at least one day of rest to rebuild muscles (the rest days are where the muscles are rebuilt), and 2) to give your body a rest before your Long Run.
