Hair straighteners- expensive vs. cheap?

To each their own, but I just got the Remington Wet2Straight and used it this morning for the first time and LOVED it. It's way better than my cheap-o Conair one that I've had for a few years and really wasn't working well at all. This one heated up quick and and only took me a few minutes to do all of my hair - I have fine hair, but its past my shoulders. It cost me about $25 at Walmart.

This one has worked best for my dds too. Just bought a conair at Walmart, have to return it, it's that bad.

I have had my CHI for about 5 years and its still going strong. I used it every day to straighten by wavy hair and it doesn't dry out my hair like the cheaper ones I had did. DD kept using mine so I bought her one last year. When my CHI stops working I'll bite the bullet and get a GHD.

I recommend the Karmin G3 Salon Pro, it heats up to 450f with temperature control, dual voltage, tourmaline ceramic plates with rounded edges which makes it great for also curling your hair. Also has a 3 year warranty. the price is around $140. It works pretty amazing with any type of hair. :cheer2: :upsidedow :teacher:  :3dglasses

A few months ago, I would have said to get a CHI for sure. But when my CHI bit the dust, I did some research and found this one...

Has great reviews...for a reason! It's even better than the CHI. It has an adjustable temp and it works great. Folica.com always offers % off deals and free shipping, so you can probably get one around $65 or so. Worth every penny!

That looks like the same one that my DD has and loves it. It gets her hair much straighter than the $30 - $40 ones and in half the time. She has had it for about 2 years now.

I have curly hair and I love my ghd. I have many other ones before and it really doesn't compare.

Just bought the CHI at Kohl's with 30% off. I am so in love with this straightner. Not sure what I did before without it. It works wonderfully. I think like other things you don't know what you are missing until you get the better model. I know that I will never go back to the cheap models.

I still like ghd hair straighteners.
New Generation ghd Mk4 Ceramic Hair Straighteners have been on the market since 2007.The ghd Classic Styler, formerly known as the MK4 IV, is all you will ever need to create perfect curls, movement and volume. The ghd MK4 styler is beautifully designed with a funky new design, rounded barrel for improved curling and styling, auto adjust for international voltages, stronger cable and a new sleep mode which turns itself off after 15 minutes . It includes there color stylers:Black GHD MK4 Hair Straighter,Gold GHD MK4 Hair Straighter,Pink GHD MK4 Hair Straighter.

I agree...I love my GHD and would not use anything else. I can get straight hair or perfect curls. A lot of people here are touting the Chi,and the GHD is quite a bit more expensive than a Chi but I think worth it.

not sure if this has already been suggested but my sister and I use the generic Chi from sallys. Its like GVP or GVB for the brand (generic value product/brand) and it is the best straightener I have ever used. I have super thick hair and it actually straightness it and takes away the frizz

We had a Chi, but my daughter prefers the Remington Frizz Therapy straightener. In fact, my sister, neice and coworker also love their Remingtons too! None of them have super wavey/curly hair though.

I tried 3 different cheap ones before I finally broke down and bought a Chi. Should have bought the Chi in the first place. It works so much better than the cheap ones.! Also, I've been using my Chi at least 2 years.

Have to agree, I have had many expensive and non expensive ones and ALWAYS go back to my CHI - LOVE it!!!!

I'm a hairstylist and I've tried a few. I'm all for saving $$ too but honestly, you get what you pay for when it comes to flat irons. My all-time favorite is the Paul Mitchell flat iron. I have had my first one for YEARS and obviously it gets a lot of use. It works on straight, wavy, and curly hair. One swipe and it is straight. When they redesigned it a few years ago I bought their new one. They have 2 different ones-one is black and wider and one is silver and about 1 inch wide. I recommend getting a skinnier one. They get closer to the scalp and are easier to use. With a skinnier flat iron you can wrap the hair around it and make curls as well.

I had a client bring a friend to her appnt (the friend wasn't getting their hair done). Afterwards they were going out so my client asked if her friend could touch up her hair with my flat iron in the bathroom. The friend had a CHI. She used my flat iron and raved about it. She actually came back a few weeks later and bought one.

Don't get me wrong, Chi makes a good product. I just like my JPMS one better. :lovestruc

Where is the best, cheapest place to buy the PM?

I am NOT a Chi fan. I bought a Chi from Target for my daughter and it is horrible. I have to squeeze too hard for the plates to press against our hair to flatten the plates against each other so it's tiring. It's too light.

I love love love my Paul Mitchell flat iron (black one. Read post above but no idea how many types they sell since mine was passed to me from a coworker). A coworkers daughter works at a hair supply store and got it for me with her discount. I have had it six years and dropped it so many times but it's heavy and great quality. I also only buy flat irons with temp control settings for our thin hair.

Back to my daughter I did break down and buy her a new flat iron from Ulta because we often travel separate and need our own. We looked at all the option available at Ulta. We didn't want cheap or expensive but need temp control. A Chi was on sale for a great price and it seemed heavier than the Chi we owned but I just will not buy a Chi again. She picked an iron made by Hot Tools. She loves it and I have tried it as well and think it is a major improvement over the Chi. By the way she is 11. LOL.

I think mine is a conair. $40. I like the wideness of the pieces. With my thick hair it lets me do more hair at one time. I can't say anything about the expensive ones, I never tried them.

This is the one my DD15 has. She doesn't straighten her hair every day since it's pretty straight already but sometimes she wants a little extra straightening on days when it won't behave so that is when she uses it.

She has very thick fine hair. It's working fine for her. This is the 2nd year she has used it. LOL at how old the thread is......

I had a CHI (cost about $100) about 5 years ago. I used it daily and it gave out after 1.5 years of use. I replaced it with an off-brand purchased at Marshall's that cost $24.99 ($79 original price). It's still working after 3 years of me and my daughters using it.

I will say that my girls have tried the travel-sized ones, and a few conair-type irons, and they just didn't get hot enough to do a good job. We have thick hair and it needs to be VERY hot to work.

Unless you have very fine hair, I'd go with one that has temperature control and can go up to at least 400 degrees, and has a plate size of 1 inch - because you can do the most with it - we straighten AND curl with ours.

I had an inexpensive one for awhile but I felt it didn't work all that well so I invested in a Chi. I've had the Chi now for at least 7 or 8 years and it has worked perfectly the entire time! Totally worth the extra money IMO.
