Anyone know?
I have had a few perms with horrible luck. I have really long and really thick hair. I want that "slept in braids" look, but that doesnt seem do-able at a salon. I do not want curls, spirals or anything. Just that beach, hippie trashy whatever you want to call it look. Can I braid my hair and apply home perm for a short bit and then wash it out? I dont want my hair to fall out!!! Help!:scared:

I don't think that would work. When you say you have had bad luck with perms what do you mean?

Have you tried literally sleeping in braids? To see if that will give you the look you want?

By bad luck I mean they burn my hair or get the curls to tight.
One time (the last time!) she rolled half one way and half another way and it looked SO BAD!

And Yes, I have tried sleeping in braids (my whole life!) and its exactly the look I want... but I want it everyday. Sleeping in wet braids in the winter kinda makes me freeze all night! And then, it's not always dry in the morning, so it was a whole night wasted, freezing.

:confused3

It's a look you can't get with a perm, as my hairstylist explained me.

If you don't like sleeping in wet braids, why not dry it first and then braid it? You can gel it, dry it, and then spray a little hairspray on it before braiding to help the waves hold better. Your hair sounds beautiful, BTW - I'd love to have nice thick hair. :)

Sounds like you need a more gentle perm and very large perm rods. Probably as big as purple, peach or even larger.

Well, it might work but how long would it last? How hard would it be to rinse and neutralize hair that is braided? I think it would be very weak in the end. JMHO.

I had a friend in the 80s whose mom did a "whisper" perm on her. It was permed, but it was quite subtle and produced the effect that you describe.

If your hair has any body--there is product you could use on your hair to produce that result simply by styling. This is what I do. Of course it never looks as "imperfect" as the celebrities--but I do accomplish that look.

(Of course growing up..I never saw the benefit of the stringy hair look that I often get.)

If you do tight corn rows it would be a lot more difficult.

But if you do it with each braid seperate off your head, OR if you do a corn row, thats looseand can be wiggled from the head - it can be done.

It last as long as a regular perm. Ive done them, and theyre fine.

The issue *I* am having with her doing this at home is simply that - doing it at home. Id be worried she wouldnt be able to get it evenly done...kwim?

ETA - havent you ever done a few-times weaved braid at the roots, for a root perm?

There are crimping irons on the market. Go to a beauty supply house and buy a quality one.

They have products you can use:
http://www.drugstore.com/products/p...163882&trxp3=1&trxp4=0&btrx=BUY-PLST-0-SEARCH

I think Bumble+Bumble makes one too(a salt spray) and John Frieda used to as well, I've never used them as I have wavy hair and so am always wanting pin straight, LOL, but friends ahve and it looked really good.

Here is the drugstore.com item. Gotta love it if only for the name! I'm going to try it. Along with continual sleeping in braids. :) THANKS EVERYONE!

Presenting the Summer Hair Collection 2007

Who is it for: All hair types.

Product features and benefits:

UV Protection with Solarshield™ technology
Color Preservation with antioxidant-rich bioflavonoids which prevent fading, discoloration and brassiness.
Moisture Conservation and Replenishment with weightless conditioners and humectants.
What is Solarshield™?
Solarshield™ is an innovative sun protection technology developed by Frederic Fekkai that combats the effects of UV rays on hair. Solarshield™ harnesses the full power of Sunflower Seed Extract and Moringa Seed Extract, which work synergistically to condition and help protect the hair from the effects of UV rays, pollutants and other environmental stressors.

What are the damaging effects of UV exposure?
Fekkai's Solarshield™ technology is designed to defend against the damaging effects of UV rays.

UV rays...
compromise core strength and elasticity.
can cause photo-oxidation of amino acids, triggering discoloration and fading in both natural and chemical hair colors.
The result? Dry, dull, brittle, lifeless-looking hair.
Tips from Frederic.
During the summer, no matter what type of hair you have, chlorine, sun and salt can wreak havoc on it. Protect your hair to the maximum with my new, expanded Summer Hair Collection, and help fight 3 of the most common summer hair problems:

Problem 1: color fading
Solution: Whenever you plan to be in the sun, and especially before you go in the pool, be sure to apply a generous amount of Sun Bandana™ throughout the hair to protect your color. Once you're out of the pool, always rinse with fresh water. Then, reapply Sun Bandana™.
Problem 2: limp locks
Solution: For sexy, tousled waves, play up the natural texture of your hair with Beach Waves. Locks can also go limp after a long day at the beach. Before you head for dinner, freshen and revive your style without shampooing with Wash & Wear.
Problem 3: dry, frizzy hair
Solution: Start with a trim to get ends back in shape. Opt for a cut with fewer layers to minimize frizziness. When it's really humid and hot outside, spritz Zero-Humidity Frizz Control on clean, damp hair to block out frizz and fly-aways all day. If your hair is feeling parched, give it an instant moisture boost with Quick-Quench Rehydrating Gelee.
