Hair Curlers Out In Public

For some reason I thought of this old commercial from the 1960s.

My mother wouldn't be caught dead wearing curlers in public. The few times I went out with curlers I put a scarf over my head.

But these women clearly didn't care. Good for them.

I live in The Land Where No One Gives A [Naughty Word] about how they look in public, especially when it comes to.... wait for it.... WalMart! I've seen it all, from curlers to five-year-olds wearing nothing but a diaper, and everything in between.

Mrs. Homie, on the other hand, won't go to the mailbox without makeup on and her hair made up.

Is that the 60s equivalent to wearing PJs out in public?

I don't think I've ever seen anyone in curlers out shopping. But if I had, it wouldn't have been the worst thing I've seen!

It's easy for them not to care though. They could have a horn growing out of their foreheads and not look any worse.

When I was a little kid the mother of one of my friends used to run around in curlers. It didn't seem weird at the time but thinking about it now, I wonder what she was getting "done up" for?

I often wear hot curler while driving to work. I take them off when i get to the parking lot. Last Christmas, my daughter crocheted a cute little bag for me to carry my curlers

Only time I remember it being ok to head out in curlers was in high school on days there was a school dance like Homecoming. It was almost a badge of honor that you had a date for the dance lol.

This post reminds me of the rag curls my mother insisted on doing for me. Impossible to sleep with those, I hated them.

There was a time when it was pretty common for women to put their hair in curlers during the day and come their hair out just before the hubby came home. Gotta look good for the hubs, ya know.

Yeah, that could be it (and I think it's kinda sweet :lovestruc)!

Exactly. Back in the day there was no way we would go "out" with curlers. Even now, I'm loathe to do so just walk to the mailbox (right in front of my house). But, sometimes, I have to.

I didn't know that anyone still used curlers. Everyone I know uses a straightener.

I think most people I know wouldn't do it. But I see plenty of people at Walmart who apparently wouldn't have a problem with it, after all, they are still wearing their pajamas and slippers.

I do, as my hair grows out. I have very curly (read frizzy) hair. I keep it fairly short, so it doesn't require any work. As it grows longer, I use curlers to straighten it out. Using heat just makes my hair dry and fuzzier.

I also had no idea women still used curlers. Been years since I've seen anyone in them - publicly or otherwise.

Growing up I had a neighbor who always had her hair in curlers with a scarf wrapped around her head. I think that may have actually been her hairstyle :rotfl:

Same. There was a woman down the street who sported that look, complete with rhinestone cat-eye glasses and a cigarette dangling from her lips. She would walk her dog, do gardening work, etc. I don't think I ever saw her WITHOUT curlers in her hair.

As for that photo RedAngie posted, it's been a long time since I've seen a supermarket with those open coffin freezer cases with shelves above. And Sunshine Hi-Ho crackers!!!

I do quite a bit of my day-to-day shopping at a small'ish, 40-old grocery store in our neighbourhood. It still has some of those, and some stand-up glass freezers they've retro'd in.

Oh my goodness! I had those rag curls too! My Mom also insisted on the non negotiable perm twice a year for us, just before Christmas and then again at Easter. I had naturally Curley hair, so YIKES!

WHen my kids were in school my DH cousin got them off in the mornign for me on occasion. She would threaten to take them to school in her pajamas, big fuzzy bathrobe and slippers and with her curlers in her hair if they acted up. LOL!!! They were more traumatized by her threat than anything I would have promised in the event they misbehaved for her! LOL!
