Do they have hair braiding on the ship or just at the islands? I would prefer to have it done on the ship and just wondering what the cost is?

It is available on the ships and at Castaway Cay. The prices on the ship are firm--they don't try to gouge you after they've done it and basically hold you hostage the way they do in the Bahamas! It is actually quite reasonable.

We had braiding done in Jan on the ship. They did it on deck 10 near the elevators in the evening and by the pool during the day. They would only do the half headband style of braids and charged $2 per braid.
DD 9 hair was 11 or 12 braids...under $25

My DGD has had it done both places. It was $2/braid. $30-35 ish. (we also added a tip) Depends on the style and how many braids. She just had the crown done. Our first cruise she had it done the first day of our double dip at CC. The second cruise she had it done on ship early because we wanted it out of the way for swimming and such. She was in such pain and it looked awful with her hair "migrating" out the front under the beads that her mom took it out after 2 days. Had it redone on CC and was totally happy with it. Don't really know what it was about the time on the ship that made it so bad. This was just our experience one time - most are happy with the braids on the ship. :)

Cornrows are $2 each and braids are $1 each. They do charge a little extra for hair longer than shoulder length.

Thank you for your input. I am travelling with my granddauther and would like to have her hair braided mostly for selfish reasons - I don't want to have to deal with combing her hair. :lmao: I know she would love it too. I'm a little skeptical about having it done in Nassau so I thought that the ship would be a better place as far as hygiene is concerned and I can also add it to my ship board account. Your input was very helpful. :cheer2:

I don't remember how much!

Just to clarify....this link it to the poster's online photo album showing pics of her DD getting braids done while on one of DCL's ships.

Have you done a search for hairbraiding? There are many threads with info. I have read of horror stories in the islands. Not sure if it was only Nassau or not. I have read the braiders can be very "pushy" and might grab the girls. Then they might quote per braid but put in 200 of them. By the time you realize it's going to cost you hundreds of dollars, they have half her head finished. When you say you won't pay they remove all the work they just did. Not to mention the hygeine part. I can't remember if I read some of these stories on this board or on cruise critic but I won't use anyone that is not DCL recommended. The first time we had it done on CC, there were girls who were crying very loudly. So, it does hurt. My DGD has a tender head but it did not seem to bother her at all. Just when she had it done on the ship. Maybe it depends on which person does it. Good luck!

Made a HUGE mistake and had DD’s done in Nassau, thinking it would be the better option……I was SOOOOOOO wrong. Her hair looked great, don’t get me wrong. We found someone at a very public place who then proceeded to lead us down another street to her salon.:scared1: I have never been so nervous in my whole life. Looking back I should have just walked away at that point but between the fear and DD wanting her hair done so bad I went along with it.:rolleyes1 Nothing happened, thank god but for me (and dd I think as she has never asked to have her hair done since:lmao:) it was a very scary situation I would never put myself in again…EVER! With that said my vote would be the ship or CC.

On the Dece 17th Wonder trip, we scheduled DD and myself to get--just a couple of braids---we were told to meet at the Deck 10 Elevators--at a certain time...we were there---the person who was supposed to do it never showed up. We contacted guest services and they contacted the person and were told, they forgot about it and they were now off duty--sorry!!!

I thought this was very unprofessional and definately un-disney-like behavior!

My 8 y.o. had this done on the ship. It was $25 and I gave the person doing the braiding an extra $5 tip because DD's hair is super long and the lady was having a really hard time. It does hurt and my DD did cry:guilty: but she wanted it done so badly that for her it was worth it;)

Here she is having them done....as you can see, she was not happy:rotfl:

ETA they usually want you to make appointments to have this done but on the day we went business was slow and we were able to walk right up and have it done.

I have been telling DD3 that when we go on our cruise she gets to have her hair braided and wear a cinderalla dress.princess: She's starting to get excited, and has tried on her Cinderalla dress, but I don't think she knows what I'm talking about with the hair.

I think I will show her some of the braiding pics so she knows what it looks like. I'm pretty sure that when the time comes, she will say no, especially if she sees anyone crying. :sad1: But I'm going to at least try. She has pretty long hair, I'm hoping she'll get the corn rows just on the crown.

We leave on Feb 28th! :yay:

If your DD is not sensitive about having her hair brushed then she will likely be fine. My DD hates having her hair brushed....she is the kind that is always saying "OW!" when I brush her hair. I think some kids just have more sensitive scalps. The only kid that was crying that morning was mine:angel: She still says it was worth it and wants to have it done again on the next cruise we take:goodvibes

This is my DGD from almost 2 years ago. Had it done on CC. Sorry the pic is so big.

In the PP picture the beads go across the crown and my DGD's hair would work itself towards the front underneath the beads. So she had little hairs sticking out under the beads. We kept trying to push them back but her scalp was so tender from the braids that she didn't want us to touch it. When they did it on CC they put the beads on each braid and they were not connected like the pp. This worked out much better for us.

Do many adults get their hair braided? And how do you wash your hair after you get the braids done?

DD and myself got our hair braided. It made everything so easy! Not too many adults did this though.

You wash the braids gently with shampoo and the back as usual. Condition only the upbraided hair as the conditioner will loosen the braids.

Our experience was great on the ship. They assured us if we had any problems to come back and they would fix them....no problems though.:thumbsup2

We were on Castaway Cay a couple of weeks ago and they have a hair braiding place on the island. When we walked by there was only one girl getting her hair braided and she was crying and almost screaming from the pain.

I felt bad for her and she certainly wasn't helping increase their sales at all.

A few weeks ago, an adult was complaining on here that they got their hair braided on the cruise and when they took it out a week later they had massive hair loss. They made it sound like they bald patches on their head from it. Anybody know if that is common????
