Hair braiding?

The braids are tight. DD 9 and I didn't find it painful having them put in and were left them in for 6 days. When we removed them we both had bumps around our hairline. I guess when the stress of the braids pulling was released it created these bumps at the follicles. No hair loss but I can see it happening a little ( I don't think bald spot though:scared1:)

One more thing. Don't forget to put sunscreen on the scalp or you'll be sorry! Or at least wear a hat while in the sun.

We were on Castaway Cay a couple of weeks ago and they have a hair braiding place on the island. When we walked by there was only one girl getting her hair braided and she was crying and almost screaming from the pain.

I felt bad for her and she certainly wasn't helping increase their sales at all.

A few weeks ago, an adult was complaining on here that they got their hair braided on the cruise and when they took it out a week later they had massive hair loss. They made it sound like they bald patches on their head from it. Anybody know if that is common????

I don't think hair loss is common unless you leave the braids in for an excessive amount of time or the person's hair is unusually weak or brittle. My BFF is a hair dresser and she warned me not to leave them in for weeks on end or else it could cause breakage. We left them in for 2 weeks and DD didn't have any problems at all with hair loss or breakage.

My DD has had this done 3 times, always onboard (although it looks like they do a great job on CC, we like to get it done early). I've learned to watch the people who put the braids in as they will vary some in quality and book with the person I like best.

It does hurt some, my DD has cried once or twice, but she thought the look was worth it. Hers have usually lasted about 2 weeks. A couple of observations:

1. Sometimes if they are tight they will get tender at first and give a slight headache, especially at night when lying down. If it was very tender, a dose of Tylenol helped my DD. It's never been a problem after night one.

2. I second the advice about sunscreening the scalp between the rows. It's not used to being exposed there and can get burned easily.

3. You will have some hair loss when you take them out. This is normal. The hair that would usually fall out every day is trapped in there and will all come out at once at the end. No worries. We have never had thin spots on her head, even though LOTS of hair came out with the braids.

4. IMHO the best friend you can have for removal, especially in long hair, is a LOT of detangler or conditioner. It makes the job much easier.

Just back off the Wonder!

My daughter had her hair braided at CC - used our KTTW card however after talking with the ladies there who do the braiding...they are contracted through Disney and travel by boat each day their are ships at CC to braid hair. They charge $2.00 per braid.

On the ship they charge $1.50. I know this b/c my daughter had a braid that was messing up and we went to the ladies on the boat to see if they could fix it and they stated that they could not b/c they do it a little differently! No big deal...however, if I had known it was cheaper on the boat I would have done it there.

Hope this helps!

i know they have brading done on the ship i dont know how much it is though. A tip is that make sure to wear hat if you get your hair done because you could get sunburned on your head

Ok, nevermind, doesn't seem like a pleasant experience, or at the very least a 50/50 chance of having a pleasant experience. I'll deal with combing my granddaughter's hair and braid it my self, if need be. Thank you so much for posting your experiences.

This is my DGD from almost 2 years ago. Had it done on CC. Sorry the pic is so big.

In the PP picture the beads go across the crown and my DGD's hair would work itself towards the front underneath the beads. So she had little hairs sticking out under the beads. We kept trying to push them back but her scalp was so tender from the braids that she didn't want us to touch it. When they did it on CC they put the beads on each braid and they were not connected like the pp. This worked out much better for us.

I love this and the crown beads. Does anyone know if they still have the crown beads?

It is done on the ship and at Castaway Cay. It is $2 per half braid. I think full braids are more. I had half my head done for $20 + tip. They did a great job, and it lasted for a month with washing normally.

I was wondering the exact same thing! If I had to pay $2.00 per braid vs $1.50 per braid but DD would get the crown beads I'm totally down for that!!! Are they only available on CC or on the ship as well????? Tell us more! :worship::lmao:

Can you get the style with just one braid all the way down with some beads on the end? You know like Capt. Jack?

THANKS!

I don't know for sure but all the pics I've seen of "ship braids" have just the round colored beads. I didn't go with my DGD on the ship when she got hers done so I don't know what is/was available. I also thought we paid $2 per braid on the ship, not $1.50. I can't remember anymore. I think there is a picture somewhere on these boards of the sign with prices. Sorry, I'm just not much help today. :sad2:

You can get straight braids put in with beads. This is what DD opts for instead of the cornrows. She has extremely thick hair and screams when the brush comes near her (doesn't even need to touch her). :rotfl: She is good with the few braids and beads. They were $1 a braid on the boat. So we put in 3 on each side and I round it up to $10 with tip.

We noticed a difference in quality this time around. Last time we had my oldest daughter's hair done in the "headband" of beads -- I think it was 13 small braids all together -- was in Oct 08 on the Wonder. The gal did an excellent job and we were able to leave it in for 3 weeks. The last week or so we did start to see little "fuzzy" pieces coming out here and there, but it still looked pretty good.

This time around, notsomuch. My youngest daughter had already lost a whole section of beads the second day, and many little pieces of hair are sneaking through from the back of her head to the front so they stick out. I think another poster said "migrating"? That made me laugh, because that's exactly what I thought, too. My oldest daughter's row of beads is not even CLOSE to being straight across; it's all crooked and looks a little odd, although I have to admit we didn't notice it at first because you can't see that unless you look straight down onto the top of her head.

On both girls, the braids are already getting frizzy and fuzzy and it's only been 5 days. We are planning on taking them out at the end of the week.

Next time, we will not be spending the money on this (I spent almost $50 total). We will elect for one simple hanging braid with beads at the end, and that's it.

In Jan on the Wonder braids were $2 each. We asked about full braids with beads on the ends and were told they only do the hairband style. The will do a couple of full braids we saw children with them. However as I understand they will not do a full head of whole braids.

Good! I only wat DD to get one or two full braids with a bead or beads at the end. I may do it too!

Just wanted to say incase Mums have never had it done. I do /definatly get a sore head with them, not that sore that it stops me getting them done again( I love them) but def sore.

To answer the question about adults doing it, I am 23 and I always get my entire head braided on the ship. I get it done on the last day or second to last day so it looks great when I get home and people can tell I've been on an island vacation ; )

I prefer not to put sunscreen in between the braids, because whether you use the spray or lotion kind, it still gets gunk dried up afterwards and makes the braids look flaky like dandruff is in there. So instead, I wear a bandana over my braids when out in the sun to cover them, and that works great. I also wear one at night and that seems to help reduce the amount of frizz. Also I dont shampoo them too often, not like daily when you wash your hair normally, and absolutely no conditioner. I leave my braids in usually about 2 and a half weeks, and they look great and I get lots of compliments on them by doing what I've said above. Hope this advice helps!

Also remember to make your appointments early--while i was getting my hair braided for 3 hours on the last sea day, if I had a dollar for every person who came up to the braider, asked to get it done, and was told they were booked up, I could have paid for most of my braids! A lot of kids were disappointed that they had no availability left, so dook reserve your day and time early. It is worth it- the braiders on the ship are the best--I've had my hair braided in the Bahamas, Cozumel, and the Dominican Republic and none of those were nearly as nice as the times I've had it done on the ships.

This is exactly what happened to my DGD this last time around! We took it out after 2 or 3 days and had it redone on CC. Much happier!!
