Had to give my cat to the shelter today, hoping it was the right thing to do.

Where did you get an animal euthanized for $35? My vet charge for my baby last spring was a few hunrdred....yes, it was an unexpected illness, we took her in and turned out she needed to be put down that day, (burst tumor, she went into shock), but it was very costly when all was said and done.

Just wondering what it costs everyone else, certainly not condoning a shooting!

When my sheltie lost her battle with cancer this June, my vet put her down ( I prefer to say "let her go home") for no charge.

I know from experience (unfortunately) that euthanasia is one of the cheaper vet bills one can encounter. So if you have a pet and presumably take it to the vet for shots and checkups and treatments when things are going well with the animal, having it euthanized is not an outstanding charge. Unless one's consideration is "heck, the dog/cat has to die, why spend $35 when I can blow it's head off for a nickel?"

Like I said, not a choice I would make. If we have an animal that we cannot keep, we do whatever we can to give it away then will take it to the shelter.

The family I was speaking of could not spend $35 at the time. It would have been a choice of feeding their kids or not for the next week. The man was not working at the time. The dog bit the woman and they felt they had to do something right away. I don't know the PP's circumstances and have no clue why they made the choice they did; I was just throwing out there that there are times when the choice is not as easy as we want to believe.

The other part being that people are raised in different ways to think of animals. My dh had to learn when he married me that in my world animals are family. He was raised on a farm. He didn't get attached to animals as pets. They were food or they were tools. He really would not have thought it wrong to shoot an animal that was suffering rather than run it to the vet to take care of it (he would never shoot it out of meanness or just because we didn't want it). It took him awhile to start thinking more my way.

Give me my points as well - because that is disgusting. Something is wrong with you and your husband if this story is actually true. A cat pees on some things and you take it to the woods and shoot it? Seriously, what is wrong with you people?

You took the words right out of my mouth. In my state you would get arrested for that. Sounds a bit barbaric to me. You ought to be ashamed of yourself. Sick sick sick!

To the OP, I am so sorry you had to take your kitty to the shelter. Obvisouly, there are far worse and less humane things you could have done, as the previous poster can now attest to. Bless you for trying to take care of a kitty and trying to make it work, I am certain it was a very difficult decision for you!

Painlessly put down in the woods? How can that be painless?

I don't see anything wrong with taking a pet to the shelter if you've exhausted all other avenues. I wouldn't want a cat regularly urinating on my bed or other furniture either and I adore cats. I would certainly struggle to find a solution first just as it sounds like the OP did.

The only other way that I would take an animal to a shelter would be if there was a problem with allergies or something similar or if we had to move to another country or Hawaii as my mother did. She was broken hearted when she found out how long animals are quarantined in Hawaii so she gave me her cats and gave her Collie to a wonderful man who just doted on him.

I also don't see anything wrong with taking an animal to the shelter after exhausting all other options. Otherwise, how would I have my precious Pearl? Pearl was rescued from a kill shelter by a no kill group...they than had her for 6 months. I have a feeling that Pearl was a pain in somebody else's tushie and they exhausted every avenue with her. She was estimated at 5 years by the rescue group....our vet thinks she was probably closer to 6/7 years....which makes her 9 or 10 now. She was a stinker when she first came to us....until we realized she was the queen:rolleyes1:worship: and now all is good (most of the time).

OP-I am so sorry for your situation....but I hope that I've given you some hope.

:rotfl2: the little guy you see here is on seizure meds, stomach meds, steroids half the time for his back and gets groomed once every 6 weeks.......i figure it costs me about 70 bucks a month just to have the little knucklehead around. never gave much thought to the nickle way............hmmmmm..................here jasper, here boy.

I hear ya! My 2 "snowflakes" have skin/ear problems, plus they are big dogs. I have to buy special food for them that costs $70/30 lbs. The bag lasts abut 4 weeks. That and the constant antibiotics, dips, ear cleaners..the list goes on and on.

ginna74 .....I sincerely apologize if I've hurt your feelings, but the thing is, the way you are responding to people here, I really don't think you're
all that upset.

In the end though, however it ended, I'm sorry you lost a pet, it's never easy

well it does upset me (how I am being attcked), and maybe it is still a little funny how people pounce on you for no reason. If I were to be honest and say to people how much it hurts to be attacked like that I think I would give them more of an excuse to say all that stuff. No my cat's death and how we came to the decission to put her down wasn't easy, but then again I am just a horrible person for putting my cat down in a different (yet acceptable) way. I wrote it knowing people might say they would never do that.. but I never thought I would be attacked like this.

I have had 3 dogs put down in the past two years and it cost me about $35 for each one. We had lots of expenses with them for the problems that caused us to euthanize, maybe the vet was taking pity on us. I swear we have put two of his children through college in the 4 years we have been seeing him.

You had your husband shoot your cat dead because he peed on your floor.

And you don't understand why people are attacking you???

REALLY???

I feel like this is one of those cases where it'll just be a waste of our energy :sad2:.

When our greyhound had to be put down due to seizures (caused by a massive inoperable brain tumor), our vet didn't charge us at all. We had spent the better part of a year trying to get the seizures under control...various meds...various doses...all kinds of therapy. She took pity on us.

go ahead and attack me (the evil one) I am sure it is making you feel better.

I won't attack you but I don't understand how you could say it was painless. That's the biggest thing that puzzles me.

I do understand that people still resort to these methods in some areas. I don't agree with them but I know it happens.

No. It is not acceptable. And in many states, your husband would have been arrested. That is just plain evil. And seriously, I am shaking my head in disgust just thinking about it. Some people.....

I agree. We adopted an older cat from a shelter for my grandmother as her doctor said it would do her good to have a companion and we knew she couldn't handle a kitten. The cat had some litter box issues at first but then they went away.

As to "putting down" your own animal, I can't even imagine that moment if I have to make the dreadful decision to put my beloved pet down through a vet, let alone look at my beloved pet as I pulled a trigger on it :sad2::sad2::sad1:.

:scared1: Have you ever regretted opening a thread??:sad1: (Not diredted at the OP, I totally understnad your situation it's just so sad for that kitty.:sad1:) Not to stir the pot.... but I worked at a vet clinic for 3 years as a vet tech, we charged $75 to euthenize an animal. I was shocked at how many people brought animals in to be put down for no reason except for the "We just do not want him/her anymore":sad1: The vet I worked for was very greedy and was not concerned with the animal, but more about making the buck, so me and the other vet techs started our own little aliance there... if there was ever an animal brought in that was clearly in good health and the owner wanted them put down, we would take the animal to the back and put it in cage (kennels) and put simply his name on the card, no owner name. There the animal would live until we found it a loving home. The vet never even knew about the animal. The front desk girl was also in on this and she would charge the client and then me and the other vet techs would place the animal in a loving home later. The owner would just drop it off to be euthenized and never knew otherwise. I was ALWAYS the one that screened potential pet owners; I was pretty strict too! LOL! This was a very large clinic and the vet (owner) of the clinic never had any clue what went on in the back kennels; who the pets were or anything. It was wonderful.... the clinic got the money, the animals got great homes. There was another vet that worked there too who was the clinic owner's buisness partner and he would help us out on this little secret. If someone came in looking for a pet, he would do whatever they wanted for the animal before we adopted it out like, flea dip, spay, nueter, clip claws... all free of charge just to get someone to adopt these sweet animals. I really miss that job and loved what I did there. This whole production was my idea and I pride myself on how many animals we saved! I often wonder what happens now that I'm gone.:sad1:

Can we please focus on the OP who is truly in need of support here, instead of someone needing attention by telling people her husband shot her cat in the head for peeing on the floor? Don't encourage the insanity, please.

To the OP, I am so sorry that you had to take your cat to the shelter but you tried everything and did what you needed to do. Having an animal peeing in your house constantly is horrible. Nobody wants their home to smell like animal pee and nobody wants to constantly be cleaning up animal pee either. Just try not to think about what may happen to the kitty, you did what you had to do.

I'm not sorry that she lost the pet (although I am sorry for the pet.) I hope she never has another pet again.

Thanks to everyone who has offered support. I appreciate it.

I hope it is a matter of she wants to be the one and only pet, and that the shelter figures this out and can place her with a loving pet-less family.

I'm praying for the best and that someone will be able to love her even though she's a little off.

I agree...claiming that she was "out of options" is bull. How about give it to a shelter? Even if we don't know what they'd do with it there, at least that gives it a chance :sad2:.

none of my beeswax but this thing isnt going to get any better if left open. i am actually starting to feel a little for ginna. if i was her i would step away till this thread is put to sleep. humanely of course.
