Had another TIA

Ok, I have had two strokes in the past, and two back surgeries, then this past May I had another TIA and with all this I have a lot of neuropathy in my right leg/foot. No feeling in the right leg/foot. The upshot is I have a great deal of trouble walking and standing for any length of time right now. With our trip over a year away I am hoping to be able to navigate, but with the time looming close to make ressies very close we have been discussing where to make those ressies.

Here is some of what we have discussed, I want to stay at POFQ, first reason, small resort and only one bus stop, if I have to use ECV, will be easier with only one bus stop.

Daughter wants to stay at Carribean, draw back multiple bus stops and huge resort. I do not have a clue where in the many buildings would be my best pick.

I can and do walk, just feel at this time, the parks will be to much and the ECV is going to be necessary for me while at Disney and am looking at renting one for the duration rather than at the park each day.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I love POFQ for the reasons you mentioned.......plus you have the added benefit of the boat to DTD! It is so much easier than the busses (which are also available from POFQ.)

It sounds like your needs trump your DD's wants. Good luck....I had a a stroke in my early 40's, a few years ago and except the people who know me VERY well, no one can tell. I did take a while to gain everything back and I can still tell there are some things that never completely resolved but still I am very lucky and blessed.

Your plan sounds solid to me. And I think your daughter will enjoy POFQ once she gets there. If she wants big-resort amenities like bigger pools, POR is a short walk away.

I would definitely go with POFQ. We stayed there with my mom, who uses an ECV down there. It was great being the first bus stop, because she could always get on. A couple of years later we stayed at PORS and it was pretty bad. It seems like every bus that came by either already had other ECVs on it, people would be sitting in those ECV spots and the driver would make some comment about how he couldn't ask them to move (we all know they can, but most chose not to ask:mad:), or else they'd say the lift was broken. There were many times that week, we sat through bus after bus who couldn't get us on for one reason or another. After that trip my mom swore she'd never go back to WDW again. In fact, the bus transportation at PORS while using an ECV was so bad, that when we came back I wrote a long post about it here on the DIS. CBR has alot of bus stops just like PORS does (in fact it has two more). No way would I ever stay there if I had my mom with me.

I agree with POFQ and it is our moderate of choice. As far as renting an ECV, my DH uses one when we go now and we rent one for our length of stay from Apple Scooters. We have always had good service, reasonable rates and the price includes insurance. If you are going to be using one every day that is the way to go since the rentals at the parks are sometimes gone early.

Thanks for the great advice. I am really scared of this, never used one before nor even considered it, but feel my stamina with my right leg just may not hold up, have had trouble before and now it is worse, figure to be safe rather than sorry and bear a rather large expense. Are they hard to navigate? Especially for a beginner? I am terrified I will run over a little kid and ruin their trip:sad2:

Several years ago I was recovering from a broken ankle and my orthopedic doctor wouldn't let me go to WDW without using an ECV. I was scared to death of the same things! I went to Target (Walmart also has them) and practiced but really I wouldn't have needed to. I got the small 3-wheel one and it was very easy to navigate. When I was in the parks I used the "turtle" setting and never had a problem with running into people. There is also a "rabbit" setting which is faster and I only used it when I was in the wide-open space (we were staying at the BWVs and I used the faster setting when going to Epcot & DHS). I charged the battery in my room every night and never lost a charge but I know there are places in the parks where you can charge them if needed. Good luck and have a good time!
