I am debating whether or not to vaccinate my children against H1N1. Im very leary of it being a new vaccination. I do have an asthmatic child but putting more chemicals into his body makes me nervous. He is 6 years old. What are you all doing???

Not.

We don't do flu shots but if I had an asthmatic child I would do the regular one. I do not trust the h1n1 yet, especially in an already compromised kid.

I don't worry as much about h1n1 since I saw on good morning america that they are no longer testing for h1n1, just the flu a or b and lumping them all together. They are assuming by symptoms or by testing for a that you have it. I think that's going to skew statistics a lot and create more hoopla.

I was told by my dd's dr. that the vaccine is safe and the potential risks to having the H1N1 flu far outweigh the risks of the vaccine. DD has severe asthma and a compromised immune system, so it doesn't leave us that much of a choice.

We will not vaccinate our son. This vaccine was rushed out way too quickly to be tested. To me, the cure is worse than the disease.

Agreed. It's just the flu.

This is a difficult question. I keep going back and forth with my decision.

But now I'm seriously leaning NOT. Here's why: I live in NYC and "they're" trying to push a mandatory H1N1 vaccination on all doctors and nurses here or else they'll lose their jobs. A few days ago, a large group of them had a protest rally because they REFUSE to be vaccinated, saying that, in their medical opinions, the vaccine was rushed without proper testing. They say they will not be the guinea pigs for this vaccine.

Our family doctor recommended we do not get it as it was rushed through and a few of the ingredients are not even FDA approved.

For my DD13, I will probably not have her vacinated, unless state mandated. She is healthy and has no underlying health concerns.

However, DS9 is diabetic and I will probably be getting the vacine for him ASAP. I am concerned about the quickness of the vacine being put out, but I have also seen what happens to him if he gets sick just from having high blood sugar levels and I don't want him to have to try to fight a flu bug if it can be avoided. He has been vacinated w/ the regular flu shot already.

He just spent the night and a day in the ER/PICU about 3 weeks ago b/c his pump site was messed up for a day and his sugar went high. He can go down hill so fast. And other than the diabetes, he is a heathly, active child.

Our pedi said to have H vaccinated since he's the one that leaves the house and sees people. Me and the girls don't really go anywhere, especially with winter coming. He's the one going to work and coming into contact with people.

My youngest can't even get the regular flu shot because she's too young. My middle is underweight and they won't stuff her full of vaccines. This will be her 1st regular flu shot, so she already needs two. That leaves my oldest as the only one they'd even consider.

They won't give it to me because I'm not healthy (my last pregnancy ruined me).

That leaves H....his family doctor said he could get it, if he wants. He has an appointment at the end of the month for the regular flu shot and to discuss the other one.

I'm leaving it up to him. But, I can't get it, 2 out of my 3 kids can't get it, so I guess it hasn't been a huge decision to make for me.

I'm a little worried since my friend's twins got it and they both landed in the hospital. They're healthy little boys, the same age as my oldest, and it sent them to the hospital for over a week. That scares me.

ETA: They got H1N1, not the vaccine. I re-read it and it sounded like the vaccine sent them to the hospital and that's not the case.

That is standard language for most Docs. I don't trust anything new like that, but I understand the fear of not getting the vaccine if you have an already compromised child.

Unfortunately, we can't say that anymore. I live here in texas and over the past week, I can'y tell you how many kids have died from just the flu. it's scary.

My kids will be vaccinated. We live in a town that was a part of the vaccine trial, we know a few family's who participated and they have not had any complications. This vaccine is very similar to seasonal vaccine, it's just not a bunch of strains, just one. You can still ask for the Thermasol free.
We always get the flu vaccine, not just to keep our own family from getting ill, but to help stop transmission to those who can not (and are often at a higher risk) The flu may be just an inconvenience to many of us, but to the two week old baby you held at church? it could be the worst thing that ever happened to their family. Especially considering people are often contagious before they have symptoms.
At two weeks my son was rushed to a hospital hours from our home barely breathing because of RSV virus, to us the virus felt no different than a common cold. He was in the PICU for a week. If there was a vaccine for that, we would get it too.

It is so sad that people have died. :guilty:

It makes sense for people with an already compromised immune system to get the vaccine. Personally, if you're healthy I'd reconsider as it just feels like the flu to the average, healthy person, although they need to be more careful and alert while they have it.

This is all according to my MD.

Im very leary of it being a new vaccination.
All flu vaccines are new, every single year. This vaccine was produced in the exact same manner as the seasonal vaccine.
This vaccine was rushed out way too quickly to be tested.
The vaccine underwent testing on both adults and children.
Our family doctor recommended we do not get it as it was rushed through and a few of the ingredients are not even FDA approved.
It uses the same ingrediants as the regular seasonal flu vaccine and has been approved by the FDA.

I think the vaccine should be a personal choice and respect both sides of the argument. I do not, however, think it should be mandated. It will be interesting to see if and where it will be, like one of the pps stated with healthcare workers in NY.

Just waiting to see where to go to get my kids the vaccine! My Peds dr said they should have it esp my little guy with asthma so we will get it. If this dr had even an ounce of doubt, he would have said no. I trust him.

Our pediatrician says YES to the regular flu shot (and pneumonia vaccine), but NO to the H1N1.

Is the H1N1 vaccine out yet???? Has anyone had it???

our news today said that the first batches were sent out yesterday - with batches being sent out every week after that. From what I understand, the FluMist is coming out before the shot.
