Hi! I have had the cricut for years and finally figured out what SCAL2 is only to figure out that I can't use it with my cricut :sad1:

Since I do have quite a few carts, I was contemplating buying the gypsy but I have a couple questions to anyone that actually has one:

1: What kind of review would you give it? Worth the $? user friendly? technical problems? Save my $ to buy a new cutting machine?

2: If I load my friends carts on it (bc we currently share them) and then she decides to buy a gypsy, would she be able to load the carts on hers? I have heard 2 stories on this...that she can and that she can't because they are somehow tracked with a serial # or something.

she can use the cart but she can't load them into hers if they are already in yours (this was keep people from buying the carts, loading them, then getting a refund on the carts)

I didn't get one since I prefer SCAL2 and there was alot of complaints about it when it first came out (I was afraid they would do what they did on design studios & just discard it)- why isn't it working or did you update the firmware?

I have a gypsy and it is nice but the screen is SMALL. It is fairly easy to use (I watched a few youtube videos and was good to go). The gypsy is very limited though compared to SCAL or MTC. It also stinks that it is completely cartridge based (if you don't own the cartridge- no go). Nice that it is so small and portable.

I guess it would depend on how many cartridges you have. It is nice to have a program will tons of possibilities with no cartridges to rely on. I have no idea what I am going to do when my cricut dies. It makes me sick to think about it. :rotfl: You can probably get a gypsy for under $100 though and it is nice to bring to crops, etc. I personally haven't bought a cartridge in over a year though because if I need something, I can get it on-line for free to use with my MTC or SCAL programs.

ETA: My neighbor and I share cartridges. I uploaded my personal cartridges on to my gypsy and gave her my cartridges. She did the same, so I have all of her cartridges. So all of my stuff, I can use on my gypsy. But all of her cartridges I still have to use the old fashion way on my cricut (I can not upload hers onto mine)

I have it and I love mine. I find it hard to scrap now without it. What's nice is when I go to my friends house to scrap, I just take that...instead of my 50+ cartridges. :thumbsup2
It does have a little learning curve, but not hard at all. The more you play with it, the more you "get" it.
There are some good deals out there on the gypsy, and you also get more carts with it. What's not to love about more carts?? lol

First, thanks for the information already provided. It has definitely helped clarify my thoughts but I have one more question if you don't mind...(even though I think I already know the answer)...

If I wanted to make something with the gypsy (connecting letters or whatever) and it was on a cart that was NOT loaded on the gypsy but that I was able to put in the cricut at the time of cutting, would I be able to do that or does it HAVE to be loaded into the gypsy to cut specific designs?

Thanks in advance for the new info.

I love mine! I have had it for quite a while now, and as someone else said, I find it hard to scrap without it now. I feel like it has taken my creativity to a whole new level and really saves me time in my scrapping.

If the cart you want to use is not loaded to the G you cannot use it in conjunction with the G, even if you have the cart in your machine.

Feel free to ask more questions. :goodvibes

I was without power for 6 days the week before last. I was able to use my G to design some swap pieces that I later cut when we had power (I brought the G to work to charge on the days I was working). It really gave me a chance to get to know it and while I don't care for the small screen (I'm used to Design Studio on the computer), I did learn quite a bit.

Have you tried the new "CRAFT ROOM" on cricut.com??? :surfweb:

It is similar to the gypsy but free.

Did they open to everyone? I was able to try it as a beta tester, but wasn't able, until this week, to transfer files from the Craft Room to the Gypsy to cut. It did finally work this week and I was happy with it, for the most part, but again, you need a computer for that.

Do you have to update your cricut to use the craft room?? Just curious if anyone knew, but I am not updating my cricut:goodvibes

I haven't been able to cut from the Craft Room directly to my Expression, but I did cut from the Craft Room to the Gypsy to the Expression (exported from Craft Room as a Gypsy file and uploaded to the Gypsy and cut to the Expression - only problem, and it's probably a bug, is that it didn't keep the welding, I had to reselect that). I will not update my firmware on the Expression to get the Craft Room to work, it wouldn't be worth it ;)

Good Info!! I agree- not worth it to update!!

I love, Love, LOVE my gypsy. At first I thought the small screen would be an issue for me being that I have vision issues in one eye, but the enlarge feature on the screen for the mat and each icon eliminated that issue for me.

I have had my Gypsy over a year. This spring I started having issues with charging it. It wasn't the charger, it was the charge insert in the G. I meant to call Provo Craft but life got in the way. Today I finally called. Would you believe Provo is going to fix it (re-serialize it is what I was told) and return it to me without me losing any of my linked cartridges. I am thrilled.

If you do get a Gypsy, definitely make sure you register it with Provo at cricut.com along with your cartridges. The rep I spoke to said if I hadn't done that, they wouldn't have been able to honor the warrantee.
