The people.com homepage has a story about Tori Spelling's "Guncles" finalizing their daughter's adoption.

What rock have I been living under? I assume this means "gay uncles"? Does that mean if they were women they'd be "Gaunts"? Not an atrractive word... LOL.

Gruncles isn't all that attractive either. It sounds like a hemmorhoid that has barnacle-properties, and who'd want that?

Gay uncles OTOH, what does that even mean?

I would have guessed "Grand Uncles". :confused3

Glad I'm not the only one who never heard it before. I just assumed the "g" stood for "gay" because it was two men... but maybe it is "grand" or "great"... although they both look to be Tori's age.

according to urbandictionary:

A noun used to identify a non-related gay male who is regarded as an "honorary uncle" by his friends and their children. Often used as a term of endearment.
"Janie look at this beautiful Tiffany rattle your Guncle Johnny gave you when you were just a baby."

"Janie just got back from a day at the spa with her Guncle Johnny before her senior prom."

"Janie had fantastic centerpieces done by her Guncle Johnny at her wedding reception!"

Not that I'm looking to hasten the day when our oldest niece gets pregnant  but, with the younger kids in our family getting older now, they're not-so-keen to go with cool aunt and cool uncle to WDW as much anymore, so we have this interim period when we basically have to plan on using our DVC membership for trips for "just us two" for a while, before we have the opportunity to bring children with us again... but we have every intention of being grand-aunt and grand-uncle bringing our nieces' and nephews' children to WDW for the first time.

Okay, so I went to urbandictionary.com and this is what it says [edited: txSleeping Beauty beat me to it... I forget about that site]:

1. A noun used to identify a non-related gay male who is regarded as an "honorary uncle" by his friends and their children. Often used as a term of endearment

2. An Uncle that is gay.

3. A term used by a family to describe their gay uncle. (mostly behind the uncle's back b/c he may not be out of the closet yet)

Curious. There is, however, no word for the female variety. ("Gaunt" is listed, but it has the usual definition and some other less nice varieties.)

Apparently both of these men are on Tori's reality show and they are her kids uncles... not sure if she (or her husband) is related to either of them. So maybe the first definition is the appropriate one?

IDK.

Hmm...too close to "cankles" for me.

And just the beginning of the word...gunk...blech. It's not an affectionate term I'd apply to any friend, gay or not.

I used to watch Tori's show. They are not related - they are honorary Uncles. And they use the word "Guncle" openly, not behind their back at all.

She also has a friend she refers to as her Gay Husband

Congrats to them on finalizing the adpotion. I remember an episode when they decided to adopt.

That's just stupid if you ask me. Why does their sexuality need to define them (as the word Guncle does.)

i don't see why the G is necessary. DH's best friend and his wife are considered DD's aunt and uncle, although they're not related, and she just calls them "uncle michael and aunt wanda". having to put the G on there seems silly to me, but to each their own.

That has to be the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. We have friends that our kids call aunt and uncle who aren't actually related. They're friends from college and we're probably closer to them than some of our own relatives. None of them happen to be gay, but if they were they would still be "aunt" or "uncle." Why identify someone by their sexuality?? Who cares??

Ummmm, our daughter will have Gay Uncles.... I just figured we would call them Uncle A and Uncle T. I never even knew there was another term!

ITA. We too have close friends that our daughter refers to as "Auntie" and "Uncle". There is more to a person than their sexual orientation. I'm over-weight so should my friends' daughter refer to me as "Fauntie Bertie?" F=fat, just to clarify. Oh well, I guess if the "Guncles" are OK with it. :confused3

I don't understand why their sexual preference has to define their relationship with someone's child.

DH & I are childfree. We have scores of friends whose kids call us Auntie Patty & Uncle Terry (DH's real name is Terrence). They don't call him Huncle (H=heterosexual) Terry.

It's ridiculous.

I have two uncle who are gay (been together for about as long as I have been alive). They are uncle A and b. Never referred to the non-related one as my uncle, just uncle A's friend.

That's why it made me do a doubletake. I would think, with my limited knowledge on the subject, that using your sexuality to define who you are would be the polar opposite of the message most people try to convey when discussing sexuality.

Me too. Uncle G and Uncle L. They've been together about 35 years. When I was really little I thought they were brothers, but that was corrected fairly early on. In my defense, they do look a lot alike!!

Since it isn't something that is talked about in my family, I just thought they were friends. I am not even sure if they are out of the closet to most poeple. Since they never talk about it, it actually is possible they are just friends, though I doubt it.
