There is no possible way he got into a park at WDW without knowing weapons are not permitted. He needs to face criminal charges for not letting Disney security know he had the gun and for carrying in such a reckless manner.

I don't know the exact laws that he could be charged under, but you better believe I would find something if I were in the position to.

Just want to point out that I am gun owner myself and have a concealed carry permit. The only time I carry a weapon is when backwoods camping for personal protection. I wouldn't dream of taking a gun to WDW.

And, seriously, hollow points? Even in a personal defense situation I want to do the minimum damage to get out of that situation.

I mostly agree, but not sure why you are freaking out about the hollow points. That's pretty much the standard for a .380.

And if people are going to fling lead in public, I'd much rather it be a hollow point than ball ammo which could over penetrate and injure (or kill) MORE than one person.

This pretty much sums up my beef with the current climate. I've been around guns my whole life which is longer than I care to admit. What is everybody so scared of? The media and the politicians have everybody peeing in their pants every time the wind blows. I know people that I wouldn't trust with a tv remote running around with loaded semi-autos tucked in the back of their pants because they might need to "spring into action" at any minute. Carrying self protection because you need it is one thing. The new "I need to be ready for war mentality is scary as hell".

If I have to walk through a metal detector to get into the Empire State Bldg., or the Museum of Natural History in NYC..and many other locations, then I should be walking through a metal detector at Disney as well.

as long as they theme the metal detectors. if i saw a modern one as I was entering Main Street it would ruin the magic. they might as well put them up next to the star bucks.

Really? You'd never know it by watching the news, furthermore, these statistics do not matter to those who have been victims of violent crime. Because Disney is a popular tourist destination, it places that location at a higher risk. Statistics are of no value in this situation, they just create delays in taking action that could possibly prevent a potential tragedy.

The news is always bad, but the fact is that homicide dropped out of the top 15 causes of death in the US for the first time in over 40 years. In short, the streets have never been safer - for whatever reason(s).

Given the fact that this man had a concealed weapon license, was given his gun back and not even detained, I'd imagine that he works for either a local/state/federal agency or is a private security contractor. Whether to be there for a celebrity or foreign dignitary and their family.

There was nothing to detain him for as he can legally carry the gun in the state of Florida. As others pointed out, he was only in violation of Disney policy, and was therefore asked to leave with his property. No reason to presume he was of any more import than countless others in the state with concealed weapons licenses.

The article I read said it was a Cobra .380-caliber semiautomatic pistol. That's a 38 Special.

As for the hollowpoints, well, that is just a standard self defense load for the .380. It is already a bit of an anemic cartridge and pretty much the minimum most folks would recommend for self defense (though there are certainly many other smaller caliber firearms out there).

BTW, carrying a firearm while camping is a good way to get yourself busted for hunting without a (hunting) permit. Be careful about when and where you camp if you do that.

He was at DISNEY WORLD! I didn't think he should have had it loaded at all! For whatever reason he felt he couldn't leave the gun in his car, room, or whatever but at leas UNLOAD it! Who was he protecting himself against? The Diaper Brigade??

Regardless of what the standard is for this gun or how "anemic" the cartridge is, it should not have been there.

As far as my boondocking, I always have a permit to camp and any firearms are noted. I do have a hunting permit as well and hunting camp just wouldn't be the same without weapons. But that's a whole different topic.

True the rate of gun violence and gun homicide has declined in the last 20 years. That said, it's simply gone from horribly abominable to simply abominable.

Not to kick up legal disputes, but failing to secure his fire are, license or no license, wouldn't that constitute reckless endangerment? I know laws differ from state to state. I just thought it was odd that there was no mention of the person even being questioned by law enforcement.

And if Disney REALLY wanted to punish the guy, they should've stashed the gun at their warehouse of a Lost & Found.

The article was updated, the gun was loaded and reportedly came out of his back pocket while on the ride.

He was escorted back to his car and told not to come back..... I don't think he had a "LOADED" gun or more would have been done me thinks (article said they wouldn't comment whether it was loaded or not).

While possessing a gun on Disney property is against policy, it is not posted anywhere at the park entrance.

Also, he did not break any laws, he has a concealed weapons permitted and is allowed to carry. Technically he is not violating law as a Theme Park is not a prohibited place to carry. However, Disney is private property and if THEY prohibit firearms, he can be asked to leave, if he doesn't comply, he can be trespassed by Osceola County at managements discretion.

I used to be a resort manager on property, every now and then a guest would bring a gun and turn it in. All we would do is lock it up in a safe for them until they checked out.

I'm not a gun aficionado, so I could be wrong, but I didn't find anything else through a quick online search about a Cobra 0.38-caliber semi automatic. Searching for a Cobra 0.38-caliber pulls up that gun or a slight variation of that gun. It also seems to fit the bill for fitting into a back pocket (such that any gun can) and carrying five bullets.

Perhaps somebody with a better knowledge of guns can clarify.

Of course. I'm simply stating that relative to days past, things are much improved. That doesn't in any way mean all the ills of society have forever been cured.

Just to add to your comment which I think is correct. The only thing that it saids is that you can't bring in guns or weapons is on there website. There are no signs anywhere. Not everyone goes to there website to read there rules.

We should clarify a few things. Assuming the information in the article is correct (that the man had a valid Florida CCW permit) then he was perfectly LEGAL in carrying a concealed pistol into the park. This is why he was not arrested on the spot. What he did was violate Disney's policy (not a law). Since he left when told to do so, he was not charged with trepassing. Had he insisted on staying, then he would have broken a law.

Which is not to say he was careless, reckless, and irresponsible. He failed to secure his firearm appropriately using a retention holster and failed to verify that he had possession of it after leaving the ride car. He should be one his knees every night thanking that kid and lady that they were responsible enough to fix his mistake without injury.

Disney does not perform body searches. No one would be able to get into the parks if they did (at least not after waiting in line for hours). What this man did was not criminal, he merely violated the contract he signed with Disney when he used his admission ticket and demonstrated poor personal decisionmaking (again, not a crime in Florida).

The awkward positioning necessary to get into and out of rides, the unnatural motion of some rides, and the usual clothing attire needed for WDW make concealed carry difficult. The security presence within the parks also mitigates the risk of personal attack, but there is still the walk to the car or the hotel, where attacks can and do occur. Deciding to carry places you at risk of being ejected from the parks and you have to be smart about it and weigh the risks against the benefits.

There are numerous ".38" caliber variants, although in truth the bullets are mostly .357 in actual diameter.

.380 is a rimless cartridge used in small semi-auto guns. .38 special is a rimmed cartridge used in revolvers like the one pictured. It's longer too, holds more powder, and is therefore more powerful. An even longer version is the .357 Magum. .357 guns can also fire .38 special, but not the other way around. .380 is specific to certain guns and cannot be fired in a .38 or .357.

Interesting. In Missouri, you cannot carry concealed in amusement parks, sports stadiums, or bars.
