Guidebook for So. California-especially Universal Studios

We will be going to Universal Studios in August. Does anyone know of a good guidebook that discusses Universal in detail? It would be nice if San Diego was also included. Also, does anyone know if there are characters at Universal?

I don't know any guidebook but I can tell you what characters are there. Woody Woodpecker Mrs. Woodpecker, Rocky, Bullwinkle, All Characters from the Rug Rats, Doc Brown, Mr. Hammond (from Jurassic Park)Crash Bandicoot, Frankenstien, Bride of Frakenstien, Mummy, Dracula, Fivel, The Dinosaurs from Land before Time, Charlie Chaplin, Marx Brothers, Laurel and Hardy, Blues Brothers, Xena and Hercules and Xena's sidekick(?)Alfred Hitchcock and a Terminator has been seen from time to time. I'm sure I left out a few but thats the main group that's there everyday.

...but I think the Unofficial Guide for Disneyland has a section on Universal. Fodor's also has a good guide for the area that includes Universal.

As for characters...they're rare, but they do pop up here and there. I remember seeing Woody Woodpecker. And I think some of the Rugrats kids drop by. But they aren't nearly as plentiful, or as familiar and beloved, as the Disney ones.

Generally, I think, Universal is not geared as much to kids; most rides are linked to thrills or to the movies, and wouldn't appeal to little ones. (A notable exception is "ET" -- which bears a more-than-passing resemblance to "Peter Pan's Flight" at DL, but is more intense and realistic, I think.)
