.....bbq beef or pork sandwiches! They always serve pizza on fridays, but I guess they decided to change the menu in honor of Good Friday

Does anyone else remember when you only had fish on friday at the public schools. Mayber I am showing my age. :rotfl2:

MY kids school here in RI, but the schools in Ca were always open

Well here in the south.... :rotfl2:

Schools are open on GF unless it is a parochial school or christian private school OR a public or non-christian school that happened to schedule its Spring Break to coincide with the week before Easter.

Our county public schools had Spring break 2 weeks ago--so they are in session today.

My homeschool co-op is closed.

What a weird day to change the menu. Would be bad if they had a HIGH catholic population. But otherwise--I don't know of any other faith that abstains from meat on Fridays during Lent.

So--if a public school decided to serve only fish on Fridays in this day and age---do you think someone would get their panties in a bunch about separation of chuch and state?

No one requested a special menu today for Good Friday- it just seemed odd that after serving pizza every Friday since just about forever today the menu is changed .

You're right..It is a violation..I'm going to call my kids school and complain.. And if they are going to cater to Christian dietary needs they better cater to Jewish ones..I want a second kosher kitchen added, and the least they could do is cook kosher fish.
Oh dear. Now I'm all flustered and off to call the ACLU about this.

Our schools are cloed but on Fridays there is always more than one hot lunch option, just like all other days...there are 2 meals that are the meals of the day but you can always get chicken nuggets, pizza, salad or peanut butter and jelly....so it should make all happy if you don't want to eat meat you can take the pizza option...

Are we officially still in Lent. I should know my church calendar better, but I thought that the traditional observance of abstaining in Lent is now over.

BTW - Here in San Antonio (very high Catholic population) kids are off today. And Yea! for Clear Channel (my employer) we had 'early dismissal' yesterday and again we'll get out early today!

And one more thing - is there a second choice on this school's menu? Our cafeteria always has an alternative such as salad (for all those children who are vegan!!), baked potato, yogurt/fruit.

I agree--I think they lacked consideration in doing that. And hopefully they sent the menu home in advance at somepoint--b/c it would really suck if I sent my kid to school expecting the usual and not having to worry about it being GF (though we do every Friday of Lent)--and then find out they had meat. That would upset me.

We are actually technically out of Lent--but Ash Wedesday and Good Friday are days of absitence and fasting.

The 40 days of Lent excludes Sundays, AW, and GF I believe. (Just counted my days on the calendar--holy week indeed is not a part of Lent and is it's own little part of the liturgical year. However--GF is a day of abstinence and fasting--so the no meat rule would apply today as well).

I know my catholic MIL gives up soda pop from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday. I always thought if you gave something up it was for the whole period. Meat, however, is Ash Wed., Fridays, and Good Friday. I guess in the old days it was every Friday all year long, but I'm methodist so I can't be sure.
As for schools, here in Ohio I don't know of a public school open today. In the district where I work, we always have Good Friday off--usually plus the following week (like this year) but occasionally just the week before Easter. My own kids had last week off, but they are also off today.

stupid catholic here...

so when did lent end...yesterday?
I always thought it went right up to easter sunday?

My kids don't have school today-Indian River County in Florida.

I'm sure if they did, it would be the same old gross corn dog nuggets, cardboard pizza or some other lovely frozen pile of guck that would be served. :teeth:

Good Friday is a day of fasting. No meat. Only one full meal, and you may have 2 snacks in between meals, but they should be small snacks, so that together, they would not equal a meal.

This is for the 14 and over crowd. Under 14, they can have 3 meals today.

My public school doesn't prohibit children from bringing their own lunches. I don't really understand the problem here, unless it is a catholic school.

School's out today & Monday in Tampa--I'm surprised that some counties here are open today. Spring break was last month. :)

That lunch actually sounds good but then again, I remember school food. :crazy2:

I'm surprised schools are open today as well. But honestly, the Catholic Church doesn't require children under 14 to abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent. Given that and the fact that not everyone follows Lenten traditions anyway I don't see the big deal. Are they not offering any choice to vegatarians?

I think the point is if, traditionally every Friday there is pizza on the menu, then suddenly there isn't on Good Friday, a parent could get caught off guard and their child would be eating meat when they shouldn't.

Heck even in the dark ages when I was in school, Friday was always pizza day.
