Guess what our school cafeteria is serving today in honor of Good Friday....

Our public schools are closed Good Friday. This year they closed yesterday for Passover.

Our schools are closed today and Monday. If they were open I imagine that the menu would be its usual whatever. My son takes a lunch so I have no clue what they serve though.

My Daughter's school is closed today but my son's school is opened because they are using today as a make up for a snow day. The problem with that is my son is bussed to school from the school district here and since they are closed he couldn't go. Now he will be marked absent because he didn't have a bus to go on. It makes no sense to me.

Also every Friday here is Pizza day. It has beed like that since I went to school. The thing now is they just sent home a letter saying peanut butter and jelly will no longer be offered as an alternative lunch because some kids are allergic to it and we can not send in a pb&j sandwich with our kids. Now thay are offering a cheese sandwich as a replacement.

Lent ended yesterday because Lent is the period of time leading up to the Crucifixion of Christ and today being good Friday is the day he was Crucified.

Our schools are out here but I would be upset if they didn't have a non-meat choice for lunch in the public school. There are a lot of Catholic kids in the middle school, many of whom are over 14 but even if they aren't 14 are observant of the no meat on Fridays. They don't publish the lunch menu for the public schools because they can't seem to figure out a way to put it on the website :confused3 . DS13 did say that they have had a cheese pizza choice each Friday.

We have no Jewish families in our town so having a Kosher kitchen isn't necessary. During Ramadan the Muslim kids are not required to go into the the lunch room during lunch hour.

Schools are open on GF unless it is a parochial school or christian private school OR a public or non-christian school that happened to schedule its Spring Break to coincide with the week before Easter.

Our county public schools had Spring break 2 weeks ago--so they are in session today.

My homeschool co-op is closed.

What a weird day to change the menu. Would be bad if they had a HIGH catholic population. But otherwise--I don't know of any other faith that abstains from meat on Fridays during Lent.

Not all public schools - our county schools are closed today, and we had Spring Break on March 13th.

No one requested a special menu today for Good Friday- it just seemed odd that after serving pizza every Friday since just about forever today the menu is changed .

Maybe there was a problem in the kitchen and the pizza ingredients spoiled, or were spilled, or just weren't delivered from the food service company.

Similar things have happened at my kids' school, and the menu has had to abruptly change. My son's class eats at 10:30 (don't get me started on that) and my daughter eats at 12:30. They've seen completely different menus on the same day!

They are out of school today, but it is not called Good Friday on the calendar. It is a teacher inservice day. When I was in school, Spring Break was always the week before Easter so Good Friday wouldn't be an issue.

Lisa, the kids in public school are off from school today.

I don't observe lent, so I'll be having chicken tonight!

I do, I was just covering my bases because I know I am going to get jumped on for saying I would be upset if my kids didn't have a non-meat option at a public school. If they published the dang lunch menu it wouldn't be a big deal.

Back to the OP, so nothing for those who observe lent to eat. Will the schools have Passover appropriate foods for next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday?

The high school I attended had a fairly large Jewish population and they had Passover friendly meals available and the Jewish kids were allowed to take time off at Rosh Hashanah off without having to make up any work. I know the Muslim kids here get time off for prayers during the school day and during Ramadan they get 2 hours off on Friday to go to their prayers. It isn't difficult to accommodate various religions in the schools.

golfgal, I changed my post as I saw someone had brought that up. :) But thanks!

Did they publish this? I guess that would be what I would be UGH about if it was just an unexpected change but then again, they have switched menus unexpectedly on my kids before too, just because. We get the whole month published ahead of time.

And I'll be the odd ball out - our pizza day is Wednesday! Friday is an up for grabs day - who knows what it will be. The type of pizza changes too - it's not always the same pizza - they rotate but it's usually always on Wednesday. Monday is usually chicken nugget of some sort day and the rest are ??? (usually one day is breakfast day in there!).

We are off today too - it's just a "Non-attendance day" on our calendar.

I went to Catholic schools and we always had school during Holy Week. Basically, the school wanted us in class learning about the religious significance of the week. The public schools always had spring break before Easter, and the Catholic schools had the week after Easter. I think Good Friday was a 1/2 day, and was pretty much just a school-wide Mass.

So it's not officially a religion thing but if they don't serve fish it's an insult and wrong? :confused3

They should always have another option, and if something happens and they can't serve fish, that's the way it goes right? Some people don't like fish, and the fish schools get isn't usually fresh and it's especially nasty. At least it was when I was growing up.

It isn't that they have to serve fish it is that the kids should have a no meat option like grilled cheese or cheese pizza. I don't know that it is an insult but is isn't being very respectful.

We're on spring break this year but normally GF is a teacher workday and most of the teachers opt out.

Sounds tasty to me! :)

If school cafeteria's had to worry about every religion's rules on what to eat
or what not to eat, and when to eat it or when not to eat it.....they'd be
serving a vitamin and water.

There's always the choice of "packing" a lunch if one doesn't like what's
being served.

well, I checked the menu that went home for the month of April , and all it said on it for today was " Manager's Choice ", so most parents had no idea it wasn't pizza. The only reason I knew was the cafeteria staff told me what they were serving today at the end of the day on Thursday-after dismissal. 75% of the kids in my school are on the free lunch program, so not many kids bring their lunches to school. Unfortunately, a lot of the lunches that were served today went in the trash because the kids said they were yucky.

I don't understand how that "honors" Good Friday! You 'Honor" Good Friday by going meatless (yes, catholic here).
