Last year I overheard the TA telling someone "oh, you can easily do all the orlando theme parks in three or four days, so you'll have plenty of time for the beach. The great thing about the hopper tickets is that you can do two parks in one day to tick them off the list".
I wanted to butt in but we were talking with the foreign exchange lady at the time.....
This year we have booked DLR in California - when we started looking we asked a few TA's for brochures on Disneyland California (mainly to see which hotels were featured) - most of them immediately reached for the Florida brochures and looked surprised when we said they weren't the right ones.
I also worked for Thomas Cook on the holiday sales side and whilst the initial training was pretty good (in a basic sort of way), it was very much pick it up as you go. Luckily at my branch I have several very experienced people and I was able to train from them and standards were quite high because there were enough good people to 'bounce ideas off'. I became particularly good at selling holidays to Florida, funnily enough but I had been a few times before I left the industry.
Oh not at all. I am sure everyone realises that too. I have had outstanding service and assistance from TAs on countless occasions. The trouble with Disney is that everyone has heard about it and knows ABOUT, but you really have to understand the mamoth scale of the whole thing and that is not easily done sitting in training. As you say, training on the job is often the most effective, but again, it limits you to what you are exposed to - as in any industry.
Don't think I'd bother with travel agents myself these days. The last experience I had was horrendous!!
Boyfriend and I were going to Salou a few years ago and had a great lady help us, but not wanting to jump right in we said we would have a think over lunch and come back. Came back after lunch and unfortunately the lady who was serving us was busy, we waited, then she came over and apologised and said she'd get someone else to deal with us as she was going to be a while. We went ahead and booked with the other colleague and were about to leave and I was looking at the confirmation.....the woman had booked us flights to Alicante but the hotel was in Salou I dread to think what would have happened if I hadn't noticed! We were in there for a good 2-3 hours while she tried to fixed the bloody thing I was ready to walk out and tell her to stuff it it took so long but they already had our money by then!
