WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House is split over whether to close a U.S. jail in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a Republican lawmaker said on Sunday, as a magazine reported a top al Qaeda suspect interrogated there was made to bark like a dog and kept awake with pop music by Christina Aguilera.

Some Bush administration officials want to close the facility to end a debate over allegations of prisoner abuse, U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, chairman of the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee, told "Fox News Sunday."

"GITMO" as its referred to by U.S.military, active or vet, has had its fair share of ups and downs going way back. It will survive!

The Republicans may be split, but one thing's fer sure - the Democrats are all for releasing the terroists back into the world... :rotfl2:

I think its a good idea. Every Democratic Congressman who feels strongly about the inherant goodness of the Gitmo prisoners should adopt one. The could live in their homes with their wives and children. Of course their wives will have to be covered head to toe but with the AC on, it shouldn't be that bad. They will also need to do the grocery shopping, etc, because the places that these misunderstood prisoners are from don't allow women to drive. We wouldn't want to offend their sensibilities. If there are prisoners left over, lets send them to Hollywood. Surely Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin and Barbra Streisand will make perfectly suitable parents.

Where would you like them to go if Gitmo closes?

You're assuming a) that I want it to close and b) that all the people held there are terrorists. Now, we all know what happens when you assume.

Now, do we honestly believe that if it closes, that those people whom we (the United States) are sure are terrorists will be released back in the world?

Why is it that wanting the United States to remain above the level of terrorists and thugs somehow translates to wanting the bad guys to go free ? Seriously, I don't understand that transition. Are you saying that you are for inhumane treatment of prisoners ?

How would you suggest we get info from them?

As a Democrat I would like to see all the terrorists released from Gitmo into the United States, with a life long allotment of food stamps, government subsidized housing and a free Ivy League education for all. Oh! And a change in the Constitution so they can all have the chance to become president one day. Isn't that what all Democrats want?? ;)

Oh, I get it. They just close it down, cover the tracks and pretend like nothing happened there.

So, you're saying you're ok with torture, then ? I'm not an expert in interrogation techniques, so I can't answer your question. But I would imagine there are other ways than through inhumane treatment. Even if there aren't, no, I would never, under any circumstances, be in favor of torture.

Are you 100% certain that everyone there is guilty as charged ? If not, does it not bother you that an innocent man or woman could be mistreated ?

Same question, if you can be bothered to answer seriously: Are you in favor of mistreating potentially innocent prisoners ? These people haven't been tried or convicted of anything. I'll even grant that the vast majority of them are probably guilty of just what we think they have done. But does that somehow justify mistreatment ? Do you really want America associated with barbaric behavior ? Just out of fear and some misplaced sense of vengence ?

If after 3 years you can't any info from these people, you're either doing something wrong or they don't have any info.

They ought to send Senator Spitball (Zell Miller) himself to interrogate the prisoners. They'd either crack or drop dead laughing.

Haven't we read were some that were released had been recaptured doing the same thing they were before? Maybe that was the plan as they might have new information.

I'm on the fence as to what to do with the detainees. I do not have a problem with some of the methods of interrogation though. I can't imagine what kind of fresh intelligence data they can provide being isolated and out of circulation for 3 years.

I really do believe (other than the lengthy incarceration) they have been treated humanly except for in a few isolated cases. But remember, it's in the AQ handbook to bring false charges against your captors. They know well the power of the media and use it to their advantage.

I think it comes down that what we each consider inhuman torture and interrogation.

Heck, sleep deprivation could be considered torture by some. But I don't.
