So what if instead of getting printouts or shirts with the pin, if we used the actual pin on shirts/vests/waistbands? The pins are free and can be found pretty much anywhere onsite. Are they magnetic? So you could use those name-badge magnets if you wanted?

Or is that going to be too bouncy and annoying for hours and hours? Bonus would be that if you decided to ditch it during the race, there's not really any cost associated.

It sure would make things easy to use actual buttons! I'm not sure they are magnetic -- I may have one in my Disney stuff that I can test.

Do we care that we lose a bit of the group costume effect? It's not like we are all running together anyway, I suppose.

I remembered we had a button in a "collection cup" on our island, and as long as they haven't changed them, they are indeed magnetic.

This is my struggle as well. Doing buttons or scans of them is a lot more subtle than matching epcot flag shirts. But I'm also trying to figure out how we can accommodate a wide range of paces/abilities, and those that are already planning character costumes (goofy, etc.)

If we got a high-res scan of the button, what are the chances we could find an etsy person (or similar) who would be willing to do DTF shirts on a variety of bases that we would have to send in to them?

I think for the marathon, I'm just going to do a fun visor (something from this Etsy store) and then get good running clothes to color coordinate. As I won't be celebrating a birthday, doing a fun Disney visor resonates a bit more with me. BUT I look forward to seeing what you all do pick and hopefully meeting several of you then!

The disadvantage I can think of with having the actual pins directly on shirts is the possibility of chafing at the marathon distance. As noted though, it's low risk to ditch the buttons if it's not working out during the race.
Yeah, I would probably end up putting one off-center on the waistband of my bottoms if we went the physical pin route. I'm also trying to figure out if there's an easy way to attach pins to a lightweight mickey ear headband.

Looks like someone sells an active style shirt with the button, that could be an option too

Ooooh! Those are pretty much exactly what you're talking about! There are a bunch of options for different pins too if you scroll down to the bottom. And the price is low enough that I'd totally be willing to test-run a new shirt in training (and possibly see about getting it altered into a tank)

It would be worth testing to see if you can write on that with a Sharpie or add to it with Cricut iron-on vinyl. We did an event once for work with a "fill in the blank" shirt and had folks use large Sharpies at the event to add their personal touch, but iirc that spot on the shirt was a border box with just the shirt material to write on.

I can say from experience, that permanent vinyl sticks pretty well too (even to satin!) until it gets rained on. As an alternative to iron-on.

I want to hear more of the original group that voted for the theme chime in first, but if this is an approach people would be interested in, as @Herding_Cats said, it's inexpensive enough that I'll order one and do a test run to see the quality of the shirt and whether fabric Sharpie will work on it.

Nice! Digging around in that shop I see they also have a birthday button shirt. I do wish they had lighter colors in the athletic material. I am not looking to run my first marathon in a black shirt.

This was a thought I had too. It's one reason I was digging through etsy for longer than I should have, because I'd rather be able to send someone the shirt of my choice, or at least have some light color options.

Are we still doing the EPCOT flag CM shirt for the 10k? I haven’t ordered anything yet, but I’m still thinking about it.
Yes. This is the most firm of all of the plans IMO. 2 etsy shops have been running a consistent "sale" on their versions of the shirt all summer, and it appears that the one I prefer isn't really going below 20% off, so I'm going to be done waiting around to save another $2 for a 25% off sale.
