Ground beef actually contains "pink slime"

ABC News emailed the top 10 grocery chains in America. Only Publix, Costco, HEB and Whole Foods responded, saying they don’t use pink slime. No word yet from the rest.
McDonald’s has since announced that it discontinued the use of, what the corporation calls, select beef trimmings (SLBT).
Taco Bell and Burger King have reportedly also discontinued use of BPI's product.

I just had a look at the stuff - doesn't look anything like meat.

Local butchers say the best way to avoid it is to shop local. Butchers say fresh ground beef at local butcheries will not include pink slime. You can spot it by its bright pink color and paste look.

:scared::Pinkbounc

I did not eat meat for 3 years after reading Fast Food Nation, but gradually added it back in when I met my husband who is a big meat eater. I am thoroughly grossed out. Whole Foods meat is more expensive but really does taste a lot better.

Just got to be careful where you shop. Never trust the stores that sell meat, but have no meat department!

Honestly. Whole Foods poultry, pork and fish, tastes soooo good. But it sure does come with a price tag. They make lamb burgers and sausage patties with blueberries that are so amazingly good. Oh and their spicy pork patties too!

We've been only buying our meat from Costco and Publix for the last few years after finding out how many other places also use carbon monoxide to make it look fresh longer. I'm glad to know they don't use this stuff either....

5 Guys says on their Facebook page that they don't use pink slime.

That's why we only buy Organic meat.

All organic means is that it is a naturally occuring molecule. Ammonia is naturally occurring in living things, IS organic, and IS used as a disinfectant in some "organic" meats. in and of itself, it is NOT harmful in low concentrations and is actually better than many other alternatives, both organic and artificial. just because the label says organic, that doesn't mean it is free from this. the contents are in fact all "organic". I hate this whole "organic food" kick because people see that on a label and assume all kinds of things to be true. All that is required to labla product organic is that all contents are naturally occurring. assuming the beef it is made from is "organic" as well, this stuff would qualify.

Actually this is wrong. If the meat is labeled certified organic it cannot contain fillers.
Pink slime is a filler.
Organic meat is only the meat from a cow that only ate organic feed and not treated with hormones.

Next time you hear about them wanting your tax dollars to feed this pink slime to kids in schools tell them go get bent.

Is it really a surprise that people who steal our money via extortion errr taxes are now feeding this disgusting slop to our children?

No honor among thieves folks, your government hard at work.

Two weeks ago school officials took away a lunch from a child and force fed him "nuggets" as an approved FDA meal...

The girl’s turkey and cheese sandwich, banana, potato chips, and apple juice did not meet U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines, according to the interpretation of the person who was inspecting all lunch boxes in the More at Four classroom that day.

Yet some how processed nuggets and ammonia contaminate pink slime cartilage does?

It's so nauseating. Thankful we have been getting our beef from a local farmer. Grass fed, no hormones or antibiotics. Yum!

Same here. We buy a whole grass fed cow and the I split it with 3 friends/colleagues. Works out to about $3.90 cents a pound.

Delicious and well worth the money. Grass fed, when compared to grain fed beef is significantly healthier. Also an amazing source of healthy omega fatty acids you simply can't get in any real quanity from grain fed cows.

That's another reason why I prefer to buy my ground beef only from places that grind their own. I won't buy ground beef from places where it's prepacked.
I started to do the same thing last year when I first heard of "pink slime". I buy from a local butcher and/or local organic ground beef.

How do you know they don't put the pink slime into the leaky packages? Can pink slime be sold to supermarket butchers? :crazy2:

Yes it is. They can then put it in with the meat they are grinding.

Pink slime can be made from an "organic" cow. Pink slime is (according to the FDA) beef and does not have to be on a label as an additive.

Okay, I'll come out and say it. All of ya'll who are touting the amazing properties of grass fed cows are just too funny.

I was brought up on grass fed cows I'd known and fed and in some cases petted, as was my DH. Various members of my family still graze cows out in their fields, and yes, I get my portion of various cows on occasion.

Grass fed cow may be a lot healthier, but it is also a lot less tender, juicy and tasty than corn fed cow. I like to take my portion of a cow in roasts and ground meat, both of which taste better to DH and I in grass fed (we like these things v.v.lean. Probably from childhood preferences.). But if I want a steak? I head to the local market that buys local corn fed cows and cuts them up in store. OMGoodness. There's no comparison in taste!

Wow I totally disagree. I buy grass feed rib roast all the time (well maybe not all the time, man that stuff is expensive. :)) around special occasions.
It is absolutely the tenderist (sp), tastiest roast I make. I season it much less but I do like my beef and poultry without much seasoning.
Sorry the roast I get in the supermarket, I have to tenderize and season until kingdom come just to get some flavor to it. I swear that's why many restaurants have to add "sauces" to their beef dishes just to give it some flavor.

It makes you wonder how long this has been going on. Thankfully, we have a family run meat market/butcher shop in town. I will be getting my meat there, from now on.

TC :cool1:

I saw this on Jaime Oliver's show last year. He did a little demo explaining what pink slime is. It was so gross. I haven't been able to eat hamburg unless I know where its from. It sucks because every once in a while, I crave a Big Mac. I haven't eaten a burger in a restaurant since that episode aired.
Given that Oliver's presentation grossly misrepresented what this product is (as has many in this thread), I happily continue to eat hamburgers.

Pink slime has been around forever, it's first name is O S C A R. We have been feeding our kids this stuff in the form of bologna and hot dogs for decades.

Lol. So true. That along with chef boyardee can pretty much withstand a nuclear winter

Will you share your correct info? I would love to see the non- sensationalist truth, (I'm serious).
