Groovin' at Grumpy's Grotto! The Final Chapter-With Thanks to All

The t-shirts are on sale at Hobby Lobby this week. I'm so glad, b/c once I decide to do something, I'm not very patient. ;) So, I was there when they opened this morning and I bought 9 kids shirts @1.50 each, then 6 adult shirts @ 2.50 each. I finished our name shirts, but I have to do the WDW ones later b/c I ran out of iron-on paper for darks. boohoo! Thanks for the tip!

I ask the kids what they want to do next and get a loud "go home" from everyone. The thunder is growing more intense, and I reluctantly decide to head for the exit........I was bummed that no one wanted to return to AK. I knew that would be our only day this trip, but I was determined that fun and happy memories would win over Momma's plan. This was a day with many lessons learned....

It's best to quit while you're ahead, especially when it comes to hot, tired kids! ;)

Chapter 6- Wednesday at MK afternoon/evening

This Disney day was probably the best day of our entire vacation, but as you will see.....no photos. :confused3 We took some fantastic video, but alas we (Dad) left the battery for the camera at the house. I (Mom) take over video/camera duty for the remainder of the vacation. Two strikes and you are out in my book. :thumbsup2

Today was going to be an all-dayer. At least my plan said so. We were discussing my plan for the next day while swimming in our house pool. No one wanted to rush to rope drop in the morning. I wasn't too excited about a dawn to midnight day either. Plus the weather man was saying Wednesday had the biggest thread of severe weather of the week.

We decided to sleep in, go out for a hearty lunch, and get to MK in the afternoon. We would stay until close. There went another precious ADR for Crystal Palace. No one seemed to care, but me so I sucked it up and grabbed my unofficial book. The kids went for a morning swim and I poured over our out-of-the-world options. I decided that we could go to Bahama Breezes and check out the International Drive area. Everyone got changed and we headed out. We were immediately thankful that we were on the quiet side of 192. International Drive was a zoo that afternoon and had tons of construction. We found the restaurant and was seated immediately. William wasn't happy. He wanted spaghetti (he could eat it at every meal). He was tired of the kids fare (who can blame him?). We told him he could order anything off the menu, but he still wasn't happy. The waiter came over and Willliam keep interrupting. He is such a smartie pants. He knew exactly what to say to get a reaction from the entire room. He commented on how lousy the music was. He told the waiter to go away. He said that the food had mites it in (where in the heck did he think up mites??) He refused to order. Of course I know this is all going to blow over, so we all as a family go into "ignore him zone". The kids color and I sip my Goombay Smash (yummy). He is quite stubborn and sticks to his guns during the appetizers, but he is full of apologies by the time the entrees arrive. Mom, of course, has ordered for him and he happily eats his chicken fingers.

We make it back home before the rain. We decide to let everyone take a nap in preparation for our first big night. My kids are larks, rarely up past 9, so I was uncertain if we would make it through the fireworks.

We were up and on the ferry to MK around 4. In the pouring rain. Buckets full. No ponchos. The rain had turned into a muggy mist by the time we were through the gates. My plan was to hit Frontierland and Adventureland first. We took the train to Frontierland. The fast passes for Splash were for 9pm and it wasn't our plan to come back there in the evening. Mountain Railroad's standby line was 10 minutes so we hopped on while Holly and Dad played in the toddler area. They kept making an announcement as we waited. The CM said that a storm was approaching MK and they might have to close the ride at any moment. The rain was increasing a bit, but no thunder or lightning yet. We made it on and took a very wet ride! I think it actually added to the fun! Everyone loved it and we joined Dad. Splash had a 20 minute wait and I volunteered to wait with Holly this time around. Secretly I wanted some of that great smelling popcorn nearby. Holly and I grab a bucket and a soda and headed to the "big drop" in hopes of catching them on the ride. We found them as they first entered, but the crowd had grown so much around us that we missed them during the "splash". :headache: We hopped on BTMR again before we left the area. The "big storm" must have blown over. The rain was more like a drizzle now.

Sidebar.....

We started for Adventureland, but was swept up with the crowd towards Liberty Square. I soon realized what was happening and made a u-turn quickly. I wanted to avoid LS at all costs. You see, I'm the Halloweenqueen. I've had that little nickname since a teenager. Every year my house is decked out with every decoration imaginable. I had Haunted mansion books as a kid. I took inspiration from a lot of the props used in HM for my own display. I wore out my HM record. I have wanted to see HM for 30 years now! I finally get around to going to WDW and the ride is closed.       I found this out months before the trip, thanks to DIS. That is why a second trip was immediately planned. At least I can look forward to HM in October. Until then I didn't even want to walk past it. There would be no boat ride or walk through LS. No Tom Sawyer Island or Hall of Presidents. That area was dead to me.

We finally made our way to Adventureland. We missed the taco place, so we decided to find Pecos Bill's. We find Pirates first and decided to hop on with the 10 minute standby line. 45 minutes later we were through. We adore POC. I think it wins as the family favorite for MK.

It is turning dusky so I bring out the glow stick necklaces and bracelets. I look at a nearby clock and it says a quarter to 8. We have completely forgotten about dinner at this point and start to head to Jungle Cruise to check-out the standby line. It says 60 minutes, so we hop across the street to the Tiki Room. TR is very cute, but very loud. And this is coming from a woman who has been to every hair band concert that comes into town. We exit and the kids are determined to get on the Magic Carpets. Dad volunteers to bring Holly on, so I stay with the stroller, hoping for some good photos. There really isn't a great place for pictures, so I stand there and strike up a converation with a CM. I ask her where a good place is to watch the Spectro parade and then stay for Wishes. She answers "Main Street". I say "I wonder if we can make it there to get a good spot in time". She laughs and says the parade has probably already been through that area. :scared1:  "What's the time?", I ask her. About 9:20. She goes on to explain that the Tiki Room's last show was at 9. That must have been our show. Which means we (I) misread the clock around POC by an hour. The wonderful CM tells me that we can probably catch the parade behind the Flying Carpets if we hurry. The Fam gets off the ride and start to beg for a second ride. I tell them to rush and follow me. We go behind through the cut through to Frontierland and see the parade coming in the distance. We hadn't missed it! My husband just rolls his eyes and the kids get seats right by the rope. Spectro was wonderful! I have some of the best video of our trip from this night! The kids got to shake hands with many of the characters. The floats were amazing!

We cross back into Adventureland when it is over and head towards the Castle. The weather has completely cleared now and it looks like we are going to have a terrific show. We are able to get our towels down in the hub where the trolley turns down Main Street. Tinkerbell flew directly over our heads and the fireworks were pure magic. :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

I tell my crew that we will head to Cosmic Rays afterward for some dinner. I was amazed that everyone tells me no....they don't want to waste any time with eating and want to head straight for the rides in Tomorrowland. We braces ourselves as we cross all the traffic leaving the park (really wasn't too bad) and head into our favorite area of MK. The baby is now asleep in her stroller, so Dad and I take turns with the older kids. We ride Buzz, Stitch, TTA, Orbiter, etc, with little wait. It is eleven before we know it and they are blocking the queue lines. We had hoped they would keep them open during the last parade. We are worried that getting out is going to be a problem with the parade going down Mainstreet, but make it out easily. We make it to the ferry and strain to catch a glimpse or two of the Castle.

Even with the rain, it turned out to be a perfect MK day. Of course I need to take a remedial course in telling time, but we did okay. It is now past midnight and no one has eaten since 12! We jump into the trusty Mickey D's drive through for some quick eats. We are in bed around 1am.

Everyone wishes we had another MK day on our plan. I'm starting to think we might change an approaching MGM day. We will see how our first MGM day goes before making a decision. Tomorrow is our "Beach Day".

You have to stick around for my Thursday Installment. It is a hoot! You have to see how the A-team goes tropical!

Next Installment- Chapter 7- Sunburned noses, crab-bitten toes, and cheeseburgers in paradise!

Love your latest install! We were at DTD during that storm...and it poured so hard!!! I'm glad you guys caught spectro...it's my fav!!! Waiting for more!

 Ahh, another adventurer in Autism.....

In these situations you just need to take a deep breath and remind yourself that his brain doesn't work the way everyone else's does. When you get the funny looks, just say, "Please excuse my son, he's autistic." Most people will understand.

But if that doesn't help, tell them that your son is an up-and-coming child performance artist and that he's just practicing a routine for an audition at Universal......

Wonderful pixiedust: night at the Magic Kingdom!! I love, love, love SpectroMagic and we always view it from FrontierLand or Liberty Square, so you guys wound up in the perfect spot!

My son seems to act out more if I explain his condition. He thinks of it as a license to misbehave.

Example...we went to the grocery store this morning. I try not to take the kids, but I was running low on a couple of things, so I took them early in the day. I'm trying to remember my list while I'm in a heated debate with William. He thinks it is a national tragedy that Jefferson Davis isn't included in the line of presidents. Then he doesn't like how I'm organizing the cart.

Next we are in the deli line getting some meats. I strike up a conversation with the clerk, while the kids are eating some samples. We talk how this isn't my typical shopping day, etc. She tell me that she is working an extra day today to pay off some bills. William then walks up to the counter and tells her that maybe they would pay her more if she worked faster. :lmao:
I tell her about his condition and he says "yeah, yeah...I say things like that all the time." :rotfl:

It's never a dull day around here. :thumbsup2

No food in 12 hours your kids must have really loved the rides :rotfl2: You got loads done even with a late start :goodvibes

I've been busy making plans for our trip in October. We have grandparents and aunts coming this time, so I'm using all my Disney smarts and planning a great time.

We are leaving on Friday, October 26, Dad's birthday. We will make it to the vacation home late in the evening. We will spend Saturday morning/afternoon lounging by the pool as family members make their way to Orlando. I have an ADR for OHana's for Saturday night. Hopefully we can see the ELP and Wishes by the beach there. Sunday is MK and MNSSHP. We have ADRs for Whispering Canyon for lunch. We were eager to see FW, but never made it in June. Monday is Epcot, with the Food and Wine Festival for lunch munching and dinner at Akerhaus with the princesses. Then we will stay for Illuminations, of course! Tuesday is a sleep in day, with another MNSSHIP to cap off our trip. Wednesday we head home.

We enjoyed Animal Kingdom and MGM, but feel everyone will get the most out of this trip with concentration on MK and Epcot. Holly didn't get to do much at AK. She rode Tri-Spin a dozen times, walked a couple of trails, and was tramatized in "It's Tough...". We concentrated on Star Wars activities during our MGM day, but other than Fantasmic and the Honey I...playground, she didn't get to do much. Those parks will be great once she is tall enough in a year or two.

I have to say the smartest thing I did for our June vacation was making those matching shirts. It was easy to keep track of everyone and the photos turned out great. So I'm getting ready to make some new ones.

Here is the kids' shirts for Saturday at OHana...

Here is the design for our family shirts for night one at the Halloween party...

Still working on day two MNSSHP for the adults. It looks like everyone will have something different. The kids will be in costume.

Love your shirts!!! I'm jealous you're going back so soon!

Chapter Seven- Thursday, our Non-Disney Day in the Florida Keys

18886289841142449502V1FBahiaHondaKe.jpg

We woke up early, considering we all didn't get to bed until after 1am. Today was our "rest day". We planned to hit a secluded beach and veg-out.

We sat and discussed our options while the kids were eating breakfast. We watched the weather and there was still an increased chance of severe thunderstorms and hail, plus the beaches were experiencing rip currents. Quite a few people have been rescued in the last few days, there was even a couple of deaths.

Dad and I were very weary about bring the kids to the beach ourselves. It was going to be tough to keep track of 5 kiddos with high surf and crowds. I said how much I wished the Keys were closer. Now that would be the perfect place to go.

Matt and I had spent our honeymoon there. We try to return often, most recently to celebrate our 10th anniversary last October. We feel so at home there. We call ourselves quasi-conchs, we LOVE the Keys. I'm surprised to hear Matt say, why not? We have all day, it probably will take 5 hours to get there, but we will get so much in return. Our family is just crazy enough to try this.....once. :rotfl:

So we pack our gear and head out to the Florida turnpike. It is practically deserted, so we set the cruise and turn on High School Musical. The bugs and smoke from the wildfires get bad at times. We were surprised to find windshield washers at the rest stops because of all the bug juice that collects on the front of the car.

The kids are napping when we hit Miami. The sky is pitch black and we see the storm ahead. We slowly make it through the mansoon and stop for a light snack in Florida City. The kids are loving the scenery. The Everglades are interesting to see. We watch the sea birds and the boats as we find ourselves in Key Largo before long. We decide to only go as far as Marathon. There are some terrific restaurants and our favorite beach in that area. It starts to rain and we worry that we came all this way for a rained out day.

us1.jpg

The clouds disappear by the time we reach Big Pine Key. We are trying to make it to one of our favorite local watering holes, No Name Pub. It is on No Name Key and famously hard to find. We always make on false turn or two on the way to the pub. This trip was no different. We turn around in one of the conservation areas and see...

IMGP0151.jpg

Key Deer! These tiny little deer actually swim from island to island! We saw more deer than on any previous trip, and we weren't even looking for them. Maybe that's the secret! :thumbsup2

We find the restuarant and feast on seafood nachos and the most delicious pizza ever! The pub is really neat because patrons tack dollar bills on every available surface..

nonamemoney.jpg

We go back across the Seven Mile bridge and head to Bahia Honda State Park. Our favorite place in America! It is easy to find a secluded place on the island. We drop our stuff on the beach and head out to the crystal clear blue water. The kids can walk for miles and the water doesn't go past their waists. The water looks like glass, it is so calm. It is low tide, so we have plenty of white sand bars to relax on. We make sand castles, hunt hermit crabs, and watch dozens of beautiful tropical fish go by. :cloud9: :cloud9: :cloud9:

We head to another of our favorite restaurants before sundown. The Keys Fisheries is in the heart of Marathon. It is another locals favorite. The fish doesn't get any fresher. The restaurant sits over the water. We order heaping plates of sweet Key West Shrimp, salads, and conch fritters. The kitchen staff comes and gives the kids raw pieces of fish so they can feed the huge tarpoon who wait for free food around the restaurant. We sit and enjoy the breeze as we watch the sun set over another perfect day in the Keys.

Now comes the unfortunate part of our trip....the ride home. While it was really uneventful, it was LONG. The smoke seemed worse on our return. It was hard to see in spots, but there wasn't any traffic to speak of. We made it home around midnight. Not bad for paradise.

It was straight to bed for all. Tomorrow was going to be our big Epcot day. We couldn't wait for another round of Disney fireworks!

Next Installment--Now it's time for the Human Sacrifice! :rotfl:

I can't believe you drove 10 hours for a day trip!!!! Do you guys still get up early the next day?

Looks absolutely beautiful but 10 hours driving :faint:

More like 12, thanks to the weather and smoke. :headache:

I can't believe you drove 10 hours for a day trip!!!! Do you guys still get up early the next day?

No. We never made it to Epcot that morning. I think we went through the turnsiles around 2pm.

We would never do that again. It was fun showing the kids where Mom and Dad go on our little vacations, but way too far away without an overnight.

"Human Sacrifice???" Hmmmm. :scratchin The title of your next chapter has me a bit worried.....

Chapter Eight- Friday afternoon and evening at Epcot, Beirgarten and Illuminations

Would you believe that after our exhausting trip yesterday the kids were up and ready to go for ropedrop? Yes, but not the parents. We bribed them with promises of pool time, but after a morning of swimming and a quick nap after lunch they wanted to head out. We were all anxious to get back to Epcot. We didn't need to worry about Soarin today. And we all swore to leave the memory of The Land building behind.

We were at Spaceship Earth by 2pm. We sent Dad off in hopes of some Test Track fastpasses and the rest of us jumped on Spaceship Earth. The kids played on the computers after the ride, while we waited for Dad. There were no more fastpasses for Test Track, so he tried Soarin, then he went back to Mission Space and grabbed some there. Our fastpasses for MS weren't for a couple of hours, so we headed to the Character Meet in Innovations. The kids hadn't met one character yet. We had yet to get a photo with anyone except the plastic Nemo in front of The Seas.

The line was out the door. The CM said probably an hour and a half. None of the kids were interested in waiting that long. I was disappointed, but I knew that was way too long to ask William to wait. We headed to Innovations instead. We all had a blast playing around at the different exhibits there. We had the place to ourselves for the most part, so the kids didn't have to get off something unless they wanted to. William was especially in his element, I think he would have stayed there all day.

Our fastpasses were valid now, so we pulled everyone off their computers and headed to Mission Space. I knew the exit area had things to do for Holly and the non-riders. I was surprised that William didn't want to ride. I think he preferred the activities over the ride, so he stayed with Holly and I while the others rode. Holly loved playing in the toddler area (great idea Disney!). William spent time emailing animations to grandparents and our email address. Everyone was jumping up and down with excitement as they left MS. I was amazed to hear they had rode it from the orange line. They all tried to talk William into riding, but he was having too much fun with the training lab. It was my turn and I couldn't believe it when the middle three kiddos all wanted to ride again. (this was a first, usually we had at least one who thought one ride was enough) We did the orange line again. What an incredible experience! I absolutely loved it. MS is probably my favorite ride. The standby line was at 20 minutes for orange so we went again, since Holly and William were happy.

We had to hussle to our ADR for Beirgarten at 6:15. Where did the time go? We made it in time and were seated right by the stage. The band was just finishing their set (it must have started at 6pm.) We got our drinks and emptied our glasses in seconds. Everyone was hot and thirsty from our walk from MS. We got in line for the buffet. I knew the younger four would be very happy with this buffet. Anna loaded down with beets, Lily loves sausage, and of course there was mac and cheese for Max and Holly. William loves salad, so the first trip to the buffet went very well. The second was not so much.....William went balastic that there was no spaghetti. He was on mac and cheese overload by now, who could blame him. Then he got angry because I let Holly get out of her seat to dance to the music. He wanted to as well, but the tables were way too close together to let a 9 year old boy breakdance. He had a complete meltdown. Nothing was working, even Mom's usual bag of tricks. Luckily the band returned and the music level increased to the point that William could scream and it wouldn't disrupt anyone. The band encouraged people to dance, so I let the 5 go on the dance floor, but just in front of our table. The dancing was an instant cure. Who can resist the fun of the chicken dance? :woohoo:

We left after the band set. We wanted to ride Malestrom before it closed at 8pm. The wait was probably the longest (next to our fastpass wait on Soarin). The ride is way too short, but fun. We headed back to China for a quick look at the exhibits. The kids got their masks and Chinese stamps, even though their wouldn't be time for another country. Funny sidenote...the CM at the Chinese kid stop asked Max and Lily their names. Both retain their Chinese names as their middle name. I told them it would be neat to get their Chinese names on the mask. Max went up and said his name was Zhi Min. Then it was Lily's turn. Her Chinese name is Chun Sheng, but she said her name was Cha Ching. Too funny. :rotfl2:

Now was the time for getting our spot for Illuminations. We spread out a couple of towels along the railing in front of Norway. The crowd soon started to gather and we took turns bringing the kids to the restroom. We had brought more glowsticks necklaces and bracelets with us. The kids had a blast handing them out to the kids around us. We had way too many and it was a great conversation starter. We talked with a family from Ireland on our left and a family from Honduras on our right. Soon the whole area around the railing at Norway was glowing with green, pink, and purple bracelets!

The first announcement for Illuminations was made. The torches around the lake burst into flame. Lillian stands up and says "now it's time for the human sacrifice!" Everyone around us was rolling in laughter. :rotfl: Kids say the darnest things!

Wow, Illuminations was fantastic! We had a perfect spot. I loved how the buildings all lighted up. The view around the lake was incredible! Our plan was to wait until the crowd thinned, but we were surprised how few people were around. Too bad Futureworld closed. It was only 9:15. We would have loved a couple more hours of fun. We slowly made our way out of the park. We stopped at Mousegear to get some light up mouse ears. We walked over the twinkling streets and took our time to the car, soaking in the evening sights. There wasn't any traffic and we made it home by 10.

We all agreed that we could spend a couple more days at Epcot. We had the perfect day/evening. We plan to be there from open to close in October. It was so much fun.

I have no good photos from this day. The video is fantastic and I'm going to figure out how to post it here, or maybe a link to youtube. The kids doing the chickendance is too cute, and the fireworks are wonderful! (no humans were sacrificed in the making of the video, btw :lmao: )

Next Installment- Aurra Sing rescues us from a Gamorrean!

I love Cha ching and the human sacrifice! How funny!!! We never made it to illuminations...but I would love to at another trip!

So, just plan to do it that way the next time!!
It looked so beautiful and relaxing... you probably all needed a day at the beach!

Question answered above! ;)

Isn't it about time for a pre-trip report??? I think you going to be there a week after our October trip. How many days this time? Make an ADRs yet?

It's Jersey week (again) and I have all our ADRs set, the daily Operational Plan drawn up, and I even have a mini Dis-Meet arranged!! No pre-trippie yet, though. Too early. Made that mistake last time!!

Cha-Ching! Oh, that is too much! :lmao: Wait until she's a teenager; she'll really be known as Cha-Ching!!

Kids are expensive toys.......

I'm not sure how I missed your trip report all this time!

You certainly have your hands full with 7! What a great group! And all such cute kids!

I love your SW shirt designs! I was planning to go for SWW this year (Ray Park- yum!), but had to cancel it. Boo!

WOW- you had quite a scare right before your trip! I've never heard of a dryer catching on fire before! Glad everyone was safe!

It looks like we'll be there about the same time for Halloween! We even get there on the same day!

Looking forward to the SWW stuff!
