Being the ultimate planner that I am, I've got my grocery coupons ready for my April/May HH trip.

Now, where do I buy groceries? Is there a major market near the Resort?

TIA :)

There is a Piggly Wiggly about a half mile North of the resort. If you are leaving Shelter Cove (where the resort is) take a left at the DVC Sales building, do not go to the main traffic light. Take that small road behind the mall to the next shopping plaza. This is a back way to the PW. You will miss the lights and the traffic on the main road. That road will also take you all the way to the Cracker Barrel, a favorite breakfast spot of our.

There is also a Walmart up the road and a lot of other stores on the Island. It is hard to see a lot of the stores because of the small signs (island restriction) and all the trees along the sides of the road.

Super Wal-Mart on the way to the island, Publix, Wal-Mart and Sams on the right as you travel in from the Bridge. There's also a couple of Food lions, one on the by-pass and another store near Coligny, I think it's something like Harris-Tetter or similar. There's also a WD I believe and another Publix near Coligny circle. The Piggly Wiggly is the closest but not the best, largest and doesn't have the best selection. So it depends on where you start and what you need. We prefer the Publix but there are many great choices.

Publex seem to be the bigger and cheaper chain store. We shop there every April when we go to HH

We went for the long weekend. Do not worry, lots of stores to pick from. If you have a chance to eat out try "The Old Oyster Factory". It was very good. In fact you can see it from the fishing peir at the resort. It is on the other side of the river. Great food, kids menu, very casual, great service. If you have any questions about the resort, I would be happy to help if I can. :D

If possible avoid the piggely wiggley on Sundays

The folks arriving in all the HH timeshares and resorts that don't know the layout of the store makes it a shoppers night mare!
Families are all saying what else do we need and where is this! Also you have folks traveling together who are trying to decide what to cook for the week!

Other times during the week it is not so bad!
Also it is a longer walk than it appears from the road. We walked once and it has been a family joke ever since!

All of the stores are crowded on Sunday and Saturday.

If you do go to Piggly Wiggly, then you need to check at the desk and get a "visitors" frequent shopper card (or whatever they call it). Some of the prices of sale items are based on you having that card and if you don't then you get charged the regular price. The card is free, you just have to know to ask for it. And rather than filling out a long form for a permanent card, just tell them you are there for the week and they will give you a paper one.

We emjoyed grocery shopping at Harris Tweeter (or something like that) - a major regional store - it is near the main circle on the island, I think - look it up and visit - it is quite an experience - Consumer Reports rated them very high - Publix is also a good backup, but if you want to be adventurous, try Harris Tweeter!

Too funny that you'd call the Harris Teeter by the same name my children affectionately use :)

I agree on the grocery advice, and add that if you want FRESH seafood, stop at the little shack staffed by local fishermen on 278 (on right coming from mainland, on left going toward the mainland) appx 2 miles from the resort. It looks scary if you are a "cityfolk", but the prices and selection beat the heck out of the "Tweet".

Thanks all. I'll print out all the suggestions and put those in my travel packet.

katmamma,
As for the fresh seafood from the vendors, that doesn't bother me. Here in Boston we often have vendors selling stuff off the back of trucks in/near the North End and in Chinatown they used to sell items out of crates on the sidewalk. The place you described sounds like one of the vendors we might find at our Haymarket.

The by-the-road seafood guy is Barnacle Bill, and we have been buying fish from him for years. He pulls out a big chunk and cuts off just the amount you want. He has come to be a friend, and is a real character.
