DH grew up eating grits prepared by his southern mom. Being a Chicagoland girl, I'd never had them, so we purchased some Quaker instant grits (probably doesn't even qualify as real grits, right?). Anyway, I put a few spritzes of spray butter on it and some honey (Am I getting worse?:rotfl2: ). So, how do you make real grits? What do you put on them?

A Chicago guy too, Paint, I always ate oatmeal, with brown sugar.

Years back here on the DIS, a lady from GA told me how to make grits, the southern way. The 5 minute Quaker grits, no sweeteners, some salt, some butter. Tasted great.

I do watch my carbs, for about 5 years now, so not too many grits for me. But they taste great.

Simple easy - been in the South my whole life. Get Jim Dandy Enriched Quick Grits. (These aren't instant grits.) Follow the directions on the bag for the serving amount I usually make the "1 serving," and it's more than enough for me and two kds. 1 1/3 cup boiling water, add 1/3 cup grits. Start stirring and don't stop. I let it boil for about 10 seconds and then turn it off. Just keep stirring. It will be very soupy but will thicken up quickly. I actually will put it in the bowls when it's still a little soupy because by the time we add salt, pepper, and butter, it's then the right consistency. Sometimes we add shredded cheese to ours, but I prefer them without. The kids ask for grits every morning around here.

I like grits, but this Northerner rarely has them. I usually get them at breakfast buffets when we are traveling. I like them with a little butter and brown sugar!:)

My eyes bugged out when I read the part about spray butter. ACK!

The glory of grits is that it can be served many ways. My two favorites are "straight" and more as a sweet. Straight involves REAL butter, salt and pepper to taste. Yummmmmmm........ As a delicious sweet, you still add the butter, but add sugar instead of salt and pepper.

Some restaurants get all fancy and do cheese grits and various takes on the classic...They're well and good, I guess. But butter, salt and pepper is still #1. :thumbsup2 Fried eggs and grits are a great way to start the day!

ok. my mother made them in weirdest possible way. she always put a chicken bouillon cube in the boiling water. she said that it added flavor. i can eat the with or without the bouillon. and i use butter, pepper, and salt (but only if no bouillon).

ACK! Just say NO NO NO to instant grits! Blach! It never has the right texture. This former northern Florida boy loves me some grits and I make them at home from time to time. Only butter, salt and pepper for me. Nothing else needed. Unless you count the fried egg with runny yolk I plop on top. Mmmmmmm...

I like mine with butter or with cheese. I like them with more of a salty flavor instead of sweet. Putting anything sweet on them just seems unSouthern! :)

Yep, sugar on grits is blasphemy!!!!

I grew up on grits!!! (see my tag....)

First, add a little more water than the directions call for.

Start with boiling water... stir in the grits...
turn heat way down on low... keep stirring...
let cook for way longer than the directions...
Nothing is worse than undercooked hard 'gritty' grits..
Let set for a few more minutes until they begin to 'set' and have absorbed any soupy liquid. They should be mushy, soft and smooth.

Serve with butter and salt... plenty of salt!

Couldn't make grits to save my life, but I had to post, because when I glanced at this I thought the thread title was "Girls - how do you make/like them" :rotfl2: "What a strange question," I thought to myself.

Sugar or honey on grits is just scary.

This Southerner, however, believes that the only people who hate grits are the ones who've never had good ones! I like them with just butter, with cheese, with butter and cheese or witih red-eye gravy if you're lucky enough to have country ham.

OP -- instant grits are edible, but not great. Do they sell Quaker quick grits in the bag or box where you are? If so, they're really easy to make. I agree with the other poster who said a little more water and a little extra cooking time. I use my Mickey Mouse wire wisk to keep them from getting lumpy. Just add some butter to each serving after cooking.

Interestingly, I grew up in the North Carolina mountains and didn't grow up eating grits.

*traditional* - Grits, butter, salt :thumbsup2

*yankee* (Call 'em this to pick on DH...the Yankee. It's how he eats them :rotfl2: ) Grits, Butter, Salt, Sugar

**Best** Mix: Grits, Salt, Butter, Chopped scrambled eggs, & bacon. (After everything is cooked of course.) It looks totally disgusting, but it's SOOOOOOO good! :lovestruc

LOL! I know. And I am Southern!!!! :duck:

No such thing as good grits. Everything about them is unappealing. I'm definitely in the minority in my family though! LOL!

::yes:: Butter Salt and a little Pepper! I have NEVER put sugar or spray butter in my grits. Cheese is sometimes good, but not shredded cheese, the soft cheddar (i forgot the name of it) that comes in a package like sausage.
