Gripe - Food in the Parks

Okay. I've read this whole thread. :badpc: I wrote Disney about bring food into the parks, to wit: "Are we allowed to bring food into the parks? [Snacks, lunch, beverages]". This was the whole answer:

Dear Karen,

Thank you for contacting the Walt Disney World Resort.

With the exception of food items for guests with specific dietary restrictions, we do not permit guests to bring food and beverage items into our theme parks. Generally, however, plastic bottles for water, juice, etc. are allowed.

If you have questions or need further assistance, feel free to contact us.

Please include your full name, E-Mail address, and reservation number if applicable on all correspondence.

Thank you!

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,

The last sentence is the most telling one to me, giving them an out, because basically, they're saying this is the answer now, but we can change it any time we like. If they had said it was okay to bring food in, my reply would've asked where they wanted the outside food eaten, but, no such luck.

One person had a very sensible thought that I don't think anyone followed up on, that it's entirely possible that you aren't even supposed to bring outside food into an eating establishment [and yes, I'm sorry, whether it's on Disney property or not, it's still a restaurant, and there's some things they have to comply with!]; I don't know whether that would extend to inside and outside seating or not, but it makes sense. I tried to look it up on the Florida statutes, but, sheesh, what a pain if you don't know exactly which part to look in! :sad2:

So -right now!- if people are going in the parks with anything other than plastic bottles, security is at fault for allowing it, although Disney might want to take a stand and post it somewhere. :rolleyes2 Working for a large corporation myself, I can totally understand the right hand not knowing what the left is doing, but that doesn't make it right. Personally, I really don't have an issue with food being brought into the parks [although having read this whole thread :badpc:, I'd want them to plan for it a little better, obviously!], but I'd have a huge issue with someone bringing outside food at the expense of a paying customer of that restaurant not having a table because of someone having brought their own in; of course, I would see those having 'melded' meals, like 2 differents Disney restaurants, or those with baby food or specific dietary medical restrictions as exceptions. I did read something about vegetarian meals, and that kind of threw me, because most of the food establishments I've been in at Disney do have vegetarian choices. And, IMHO, if the tables outside are clearly designated for that restaurant's guests, yes, I'd include those as part of that restaurant. A restaurant is a restaurant, and I wouldn't bring my own meal into any restaurant.

As many people have pointed out if Disney were to allow food in the parks, then designated areas for those seeking to picnic should be provided. As for clean-up, which was a problem several people pointed out, yes, ideally Disney would need to police the area. But really, if you're bringing your own food in, should they really have to clean up after you on a regular basis? Can you not throw your own trash out? :confused3

This is something I have an issue with, the way people create messes, then can't manage to clean up after themselves, ranging from just plain out public littering, to those leaving their trays, napkins, etc, in the food courts [and yes, I know there are bussers at all the food courts, but come on, especially if it's crowded, will it kill you to toss the trash in the garbage can and put the tray on the handy-dandy tray holder? :rolleyes1 ] to the things done in bathrooms. I mean, yes, we're paying to be there, but do we have to make sure it gets dirty? Would you leave a paper towel you dropped on the floor in your bathroom at home on the floor for someone else to clean up? I wouldn't, and if I drop one at an outside bathroom, I pick it up and file it. I also check the seat after I'm done, and make sure the toilet flushed. Okay, too much information, and I digress; leave that all for another day, another topic.

I also think Disney needs to add more outside seating all over the parks; both for the restaurants so everyone can eat comfortably, and in general; there are many areas that could use additional benches, including the bus stops. I mean, if you buy an ice cream or soda, you don't always want to trudge around with it, and if I'm waiting for the more exitement-seeking members of my family outside a ride, I'd really like to be able to sit sometimes, but it can really be tough finding an empty, nearby bench.

Oh, well, this is way too long, and keep in mind it's JMHO, and I'd really prefer not to be flamed :bitelip: , but after reading this whole d*mn thread, :badpc: I had to reply. :duck:

I suggest PB&J Police. "Hey you! We don't serve strawberry jelly in these parks - you brought that from home, didn't you. All right people, put down the milk and move away from the table. Wait a minute, is that a candy bar in the baby's diaper? If there weren't people watching, I'd beat all of you with my night stick."

Where will it end? Timers for the elderly so that they don't sit too long drinking their coffee? I know, let's set up a designated area for people to eat that bring their food in from outside. That way the rest of us can walk by, point at them, and laugh as we go and spend way too much money for lousy food. That'll show them!

Something must be done immediately!

I think "some" people would be very happy with this set up.. How sad is that? :sad2:

I seriously, and I mean SERIOUSLY hope this is a joke. It's about 10feet from viewing ridiculous.

bottom line isthe tables are for paying patrons and not people that bring in thier own food . if its busy there is not enough tables when people are holding tables when there at the end of the line, but what can you do ? i don't think theres room to expand the seating areas.disney does not encourage bringing in food....

PinMan said:

But they don't discourage it either..

we were at the MK gates a couple of months ago waiting to go through bag check. the woman behind us asked what the line was for, my wife told her. she got a very alarmed look on her face and asked 'what do you think they'll do, we have sandwiches in this one?!" :teeth:

And what makes it even more confusing, is that is not the answer I rec'd, the last time I wrote (wdw.guest.communications@disneyworld.com), your letter is not the same as another posted here, although it's close, it's not at all what guest services will tell you right outside the park, there is no signage telling anyone that, it's no longer on their site, that any of us have been able to find, and believe it or not, most people going in the parks are not reading the disboards, or have even heard of it....oh, and, it's been removed from the brochures. And we know that isn't what happens at the security line (people told no food). While I won't eat inside the restaurants, I will use a table outside on the rare occasions that we bring food in...although I admit, I do not go during the busy times, and there are usually tables. It will continue to not bother me if others use tables. So, I guess it will continue to be an opinion, unless Disney wants to share the correct info with the public..if they are sure of what it is, and if they start giving eveyone the same info.

I was thinking a bit more about this rule you guys have created, and wanted to clarify one point. Does this apply at the resort CS restaurants too? And, if so, do I actually have to buy something on this particular trip, or can I just use my refillable mug to get the right to sit down?

Like that's ever going to happen.. :rotfl2:

Disney knows which side it's bread is buttered on and they're not going to do anything to discourage people paying to come through those gates (other than looking for weapons, alcohol and glass bottles).. Their number one priority is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.. ;)

Oh no..are you saying you would be using a mug from a previous trip:drinking1 ??? Duck, before the responses come

Hmmmm. There must be a sign for this on each of the tables-inside and out-....and I'm sure that someone will post if for us!

You know, I go in August. That's a pretty busy month, and I don't think that I've have often had the problem of not enough tables. (even with that one cooler guy last year) But maybe that is because I choose to eat at off times. :confused3 If I were going at Christmas, July 4, Easter etc. I'd know that the busyiness of the park would definitely demand that I not eat at "regular" times (or use TS to avoid the crowds).

Sorry to hear that the tables near the Dole Whip are gone. We have sat there (even though it was smoking area :smokin: ) just to rest. Done the same at resort CS, too! AND, I've sat in the couches at WL while visiting, the chairs at POLY while exploring the beach and the rocking chairs at Beach Club when I walked down to check out the resort store.

ok here is the answer after I emailed back regarding the weird sentence.

Dear Vanessa,

Thank you for contacting the Walt Disney World Resort.

Our standard policy is not allowing food and drinks (water bottles and small juice boxes are
permitted) to be brought into the parks, however, guests who have specific food allergies are
welcome to bring their own small snack items with them into the theme parks. However, picnic
baskets, ice chests, and coolers are not permitted.

If you have questions or need further assistance, feel free to contact us.

Please include your full name, E-Mail address, and reservation number if applicable on all
correspondence.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

The first sentence doesn't make sense?? We would also....was there supposed
to be something before that?
And is this a policy that can be found on the WDW website?
Thanks!

Hello,
I was wondering if WDW has a written policy on bringing food, drinks and
coolers into the theme parks...so far no one has responded to my question.

Please let me know.

Thanks!

so regardless of what people say on a message board...their policy is being overlooked.

And as far as numbers being inflated...I don't recall saying an exact number...but I have seen lots of coolers...and by lots, I would say over 20 in a day...to me, that is a lot! It may not be "a lot" with respect to the number coming through the gate, but that is just LARGE coolers I am talking about....I would say every 4th or 5th person has some small bag/cooler.
So the poster who thought I was lying or inflating the truth, WHATEVER. We are there constantly, my sister used to work there, she goes at least once a week and we have lately always seen coolers - large ones...ones with a handle on each end. I think it has become more prominent with people who are reading message boards such as this one and trying to save a buck or two.

Personally, I would never dream of taking my families "meal" into a theme park. I bring one or two small snack bags of goldfish and that's pretty much it. We buy everything else. It's not worth a $30 cs meal to haul around a cooler, no matter the size, and worry about keeping things fresh. And if I want to have a picnic I go to the beach or a state park. But to each their own. I just wish they would enforce their policy instead of overlooking it all the time.

I agree, that is a lot of large coolers. I'm just not seeing them myself, but as I said, I seldom go during the busy times. Where do they put them while on rides and in shows..with stroller parking? How do they drag thrm through crowds? I thought you weren't even suppose to have backpacks that drag behind you.

As usual, it's taking a lot longer than everyone else, for me to get my response from Disney, but once I do, I'll post it as well. My letter to them was a little longer, since I asked how people would know these policies, if they aren't posted, and I also mentioned I would like the official Disney policy, and if they weren't sure, to please research it before answering. It usually takes me at least a week (sometimes longer) to get a response, and it's often followed up by a phone call. My original note does not say what these are saying (I was told it was fine (not coolers, but sandwiches, drinks and snacks..no glass or alcohol)..but then my original note about appliances in rooms, was much much different from the last one I got (where they said it was fine to have appliances, as long as you unplug them).

the big ones we have seen have always been in a stroller, whether rented or owned.

But like with everything else...I think it is hard to get every CM on the same page. Unless they post it and enforce it, it will probably always be an unwritten rule that gets broken daily.

and we are also there at all different times, but since we go so much and I have two children 3 and 1, I do a lot of standing around waiting for DH and everyone else to finish a ride. I tend to really people watch and listen. I have finally gotten to the point that absolutely nothing amazes me at WDW.

I've never noticed what other people are eating while I'm sitting at a table at counter service. Nor do I notice what they're munching on when I'm trying to find that elusive table during busy seasons.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest what folks bring into parks. My vacation is way too important for me to get irritated at what others are doing. I think MYOB is pretty applicable here.
