I have never had a problem with any other show I watched like last night's Grey's Anatomy.
The storyline with the man who had the warts growing all over his body just scheved me out. I can't stop thinking about it even today. I tape all the shows and usually watch them again the next day but I can't watch that one, just plain yuck.
I worked for 2 years on the neuro floor and saw some pretty ugly stuff but never anything like that thank you. YUCK is all I can say. If I had that problem I would have committed suicide years ago. I know it is a real disease but usually kept in check and not allowed to get to that extreme. Just seeing it and knowing it was real just was too much for me.
the worst thing I ever ran into in the hospital was a man who weighed over 500 lbs. Of course it was my turn to take in the new admit and I had to get him from the ER stretcher into bed after giving him a bed bath. Bed bugs, lice, etc, growing under the skin folds but still not as disgusting as last night.

That totally grossed me out. As they were clipping off the growths on his fingers, I felt sick. But when that spider came crawling out, I buried my face in my hands.

I can't imagine anyone not getting help for a condition like that, especially here in the U.S. where medical attention is readily available. :confused3

I'm still grossed out today. I keep flashing back to it and it makes me nauseous...

I felt sick when I watched that part. I actually screamed.

And where it's very pricey.

I'm sorry, but if you've got a condition that bad, you pay whatever you need to pay to get rid of it. I understand third world countries, where medicine is unavailable and doctors aren't trained well, but here in the U.S., you take care of it regardless of the cost.

Obviously, people don't.

And you can't pay if you don't have the money.

The US ranks 37th in the world for health care. Not anything to brag about, IMO.

I'm sorry, but if you can't afford to pay the medical bills then you live with whatever condition you have. I imagine surgery like he had, and more surgery to come, would be extremely expensive and without insurance (heck, sometimes even WITH it) some people just can't afford it.

Sorry, if I was sick and needed care and couldn't afford it, then I would still go to the hospital, which in emergency situations can't turn you away, and I would get the help I needed. I would apply for charity care from the hospital and state aid if need be. Or I would let the doctors and hospitals sue me for payment. What I wouldn't do is go without treatment!!

To OP, yes I was and still am grossed out by last nites show!

I saw a show about a man that had that actual condition, I think on TLC. They call him the tree man or something like that. It was very sad. They took some off, but they were growing back within a few months.

Didn't they say on Gray's it was a form of HPV? Which is an std? I told my husband we should save the episode and make our 13 y.o. daughter watch it. If that doesn't scare her into waiting til she's married, nothing will! :lmao:

Exactly. :thumbsup2 You do what you've got to do. And you don't let a condition like that get out of control.

But this disease is NOT an emergency, so hospitals would have every right to turn you away.

While I like the way you think, HPV includes not only genital warts, but also plantar warts and regular, garden-variety warts. This man's disease was probably not sexually-transmitted. :)

There are many types of warts that are classified as HPV that are not sexually transmitted including plantar and common warts. Warts are caused by the Human Papilloma virus. It was actually a topic on Rachel Ray yesterday too.

I have a long term care patient who has the same virus. Not to that extent though.

It is very sad

It is a sad illness to have but I found the growths fascinating. I would love to examine them and figure out how to stop them from growing. I missed my calling in life- I should have been a virologist or some kind of scientist. My DS had a wart on his toe once and I actually enjoyed applying the medicine and watching that thing fall off. Anyway, I wasn't grossed out by it but wish we had a cure for these viruses.

He didn't really bother me. I've seen the tree man thing on TLC, so it wasn't any big deal. What did tick me off what how blase they were about the pit tumor patient. It took me YEARS to finally be diagnosed with mine and I sure as heck didn't have surgery the next day. I'm also dealing with some pretty severe after affects from it, which that guy didn't have.

ACtually this case is fashioned after a real man that live in India I think, It has been used before.

Deleted, sorry fussing at wrong person
