Greatest Band Ever?

That's mine!

I am not going with masses, I am going on what the greatest band is for me, that's DD. :teeth:

Duran Duran is definitely one of my favorite bands but I don't know that I could say that they are the "greatest" when in the company of some of these others.

That's why I put the disclaimer it was solely my greatest band. I know they will never win any contest for greatest of all time, but in my little nothing book they do. ;)

Don't get me wrong, I very much like and appreciate The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, but they weren't for me. They are my parent's music. 😲 😬 Their music wasn't a soundtrack to my life.

I actually skew older than I am - I love 80's music, but really I should like more 90's stuff. Duran Duran is one of my favorites, along with Madness and Oingo Boingo. But I have a healthy respect for the classics too.

Greatest is too subjective. I certainly would think the Beatles would be among them, but not everyone's choice., At times sometimes bands like Spike Jones and his City Slickers might fit the bill, or the Rolling Stones, or Kiss or the Monkees or ABBA or Lawrence Welk.
The Beatles are the best sellers, but Lawrence Welk's band has been on TV for 73 years and has a devoted PBS audience every Saturday night to this day.

I love U2, doesn't necessarily mean they're the greatest band ever. I think personal preference has a lot to do with answering this topic. My first instinct was to say the Stones.
Okay, my lifetime favs are solo acts but they play nicely with others.
As well, there are sooooo many groups that have influenced me yet just can’t play favoritism. They are all good and have nothing to do with popularity; in fact mass appeal can be the kiss of death🙂.

Still, I read an article earlier this month that opened my mind to a world of possibilities. Who do U2, Talking Heads/Byrne, Bowie, John Cale, Devo, Coldplay and James have in common?

Brian Eno

How did I never realize the role he played in fashioning my ears for decades?!?

Not worthy.

Queen was the first that came to mind.

The Who, The Eagles and The Beatles would be right behind them.

ETA: Have to add Styx, Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd to the list I started...

Eagles, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, KISS, Glenn Miller Orch, and my most favorite of all time: Depeche Mode...

Definitely the Eagles.
They crossed genres without even trying.

(But MY greatest? Oingo Boingo without question!)

Hey - a fellow Oingo Boingo lover! They are my all time favorite - Danny Elfman is a musical genius. They were the first band where I really sought to get everything, even some outtakes and such. I came to them later, when I was in college, but, wow, I love all of it!

They are on tour if you didn’t know. I saw phish last night and Mohegan Sun and they had a huge ad for them coming soon. I didn’t know they were touring.

They were the best. And I agree, Danny is genius. They played at my HS when they were just starting out and I was forever hooked🥰

Was that still the Mystic Knights days? I once acquired some recordings from a lot of that old stuf f(before it was all released on the Internet). They were fun. I love how they would kind of reinvent themselves every couple of albums - the versatility was amazing. I guess when you have an experimenter like Danny at the helm that is to be expected.

For me it would be Herman’s Hermits
At 76 Peter Noone puts in an incredible show
Still doing his hits from when he was 16
He’s now saying 10 more years if shows.
He’ll make it.

The Beatles! I fell in love in 1965 when I heard them on a record player at a neighbor's house. DH and I finally saw Sr Paul perform in 2022. Our son and DIL found tickets to the Orlando concert (coincidentally, we were all planning on being at BWV) and treated us. We were really close to the stage. Best three hours EVER!
