Great time at BCV

We just returned from 5 days at BCV. Despite my concern based on previous posts, everything went very well. We had 4 rooms: 2 2BRs (477 and 478), and 2 Studios(449 and 450). 3 of the 4 rooms were ready at 2 pm, the 4th was ready at 4 pm. Our rooms were clean, in good shape, with no bugs of any kind! A/C operated well. The top lock on a couple of sliding doors wouldn't latch, but we just moved the furniture to another balcony in that unit so the kids couldn't climb up to the railing. Room 477 had a view of illuminations, 2 cranes, and a bit of monorail track, all of which was a big hit with the kids. Stormalong Bay was fantastic, especially since we lucked out with warmer than normal weather.

Our only negative was with the quality of information received from someone at the front desk when one of our kids fell onto the corner of a coffee table and was bleeding pretty badly from the forehead. My BIL calmly told them, "We have a small child bleeding from a head injury. It's not a 911 situation, but he does need to be looked at pretty quickly." They told him to bring him to a Centracare urgent care facility offsite. I asked my BIL to ask again if there wasn't something onsite, as I found it hard to believe WDW didn't have an EMTs around. The woman on the phone said the only other alternative was to bring my son back into a park to a First Aid center. Then she told BIL to, "Have a magical day."!!! Clearly a training issue, as my FIL walked down to the front desk and found a wonderful person named Hazel, who obviously had been around long enough to know, and she sent up the First Responders from the Marina. They were great, and after checking out my son, they contacted the Reedy Creek EMTs, who were also wonderful. They determined my son needed stitches, and they said they were "required to offer transport to the Emergency Room." The way they phrased it made me ask if we would get through the ER any faster if we went with them. They said No. Then I asked if there were any other options beside the ER, and they told me about a wonderful after hours Pediatric Clinic. After I said that's what I wanted to do, one of the paramedics said that's where he would take his kids; he just has to advise the ER for liability reasons. The clinic was calm, quiet, and decorated in a Finding Nemo theme. My son had a flat screen TV over his head on the exam table, with the remote on his belly, and he was able to flip back and forth between Finding Nemo and Emporer's New Groove. He had a blast, and never noticed the stitches going in. Hopefully no other parents have to deal with an injury while at WDW, but if you do, please be aware of the First Responders. Unfortunately I don't remember how to contact them, but she said they were there from 6am until 11pm. They are the first point of contact, and if they can't handle it, they call in the Reedy Creek EMTs. All of that was free of charge, too. The Pediatric Clinic was called After Hours Pediatrics, and was in the Crossroads shopping plaza, near a TGI Fridays.

Glad you had a nise time and the rooms were OK.
Sorry to hear about the stiches, though! Thansk for sharing the info.
Out of curiosity, waht exactly cut him?

He fell off the couch and cut his forehead on the corner of the coffee table. For future visits we'll be putting that table into a closet!

I am really glad your son is okay. Sounds like they need a bit more training at the front desk. It is ashame that you had to ask twice to get a response. Sounds like everything turned out okay. My husband had to be transported via amblulance at WDW to the ER and it took a really long time, that clinc sounds like it is just right for something like stiches or an earache, I will have to keep that in mind.

Was that the big square coffee table in front of the couch that holds the pack and play? I did notice that that had pretty pointed edges. Did you let someone in manangement at BCV and DVC know that he hit his head on the coffee table in the room? They need to keep that in mind when they replace those coffee tables.

Glad you had a good time despite the problems.

By the way, I know those two Dedicated 2 bedrooms are the ones opposite each other at the very end of the hallway, but do either of them have 2 queens in the 2nd bedroom? Oh and did you ever see the gator in the canel below the room?

Thanks so much for the information. I hope I can remember it if a problem comes up.

Hope your little one is feeling better. what a rotten thing to happen on vacation! It is good to know about that clinic. do they offer x-ray and things of that nature? Do you happen to know. It sounds like thats a great alternative to waiting for 4 hours in the ER. I also noticed that table. We are in the habit of putting the coffee tables behind the big chair in all the living rooms. we get ours out of the way, because mine are climbers.
It is always somthing isn't it! Hope he is feeeling better!

I hope your son is feeling better. Thanks so much for posting such excellent information.

Terry S: yes, it was that coffee table that holds the pack 'n play, and the Shift Mgr. did come up while the paramedics were there. Both of the 2BRs we had (477 and 478) have a sleeper in the 2nd bedroom. We looked and looked for the alligator, but we only saw fish and turtles...

twinmomplus2: I don't know about x-rays, but they were able to do stitches, which is more than our pediatrician at home could handle. We also have twins +2 kids (aged 6,4,2,2) so it probably won't be our last visit to that clinic!

Thanks for the information! My goodness a 4 year old, a 2 year old and newborn twins. you must have had a busy couple of years! ::yes::

How sad for your family, but what good info to pass along about medical care -- thanks! I'm actually jotting down the names to go into my little "info" book I carry w/ me to WDW!

I shall also show your post to my dh. When our son was born, I told dh to haul our coffee table away. DH resisted -- what, no coffee table? How would he survive without somewhere to put his sports illustrated and his feet? And really now, wasn't I being over-reactive? 9 years and 3 kids later, we still have no coffee table. Can't we bring it back now, he says? Nope, sez I -- it's actually more of a hazard now than ever, the way our two carpet rascal sons (9 and 7) wrestle around on the floor, and dd (age 3) gets into the thick of it with them as well!

I bought dh a recliner (nice and padded!) and a magazine rack (tucks in behind the recliner) for Father's Day last year... he can put his feet and SI there!

Should I add rubber corners to my pack list for DVC now? :)

Hi,

I tried to look up the phone number for After Hours Pediatrics, as a future reference, but couldn't tell which one was the one by crossroads.

If you can find the phone number, could you please post it.

We're heading down in Feb. and would like it as a backup.

Thanks, Goldi.
