Scientists say SARS virus identified

HONG KONG, March 27 — Scientists in Hong Kong said Thursday they had identified the virus behind a pneumonialike outbreak that has killed more than 50 people worldwide. The announcement came a day after health authorities in Canada’s most populous province advised hundreds of people to quarantine themselves to try to stop the spread of the fatal illness, which began in Asia and has now spread to three continents.

DOCTORS IN Hong Kong said Thursday that the finding will allow them to diagnose the disease in patients much faster, reducing the death rate. The finding was confirmed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the scientists said.
They also said they had developed a diagnostic test that will allow doctors to tell within eight hours whether someone has the disease, according to Reuters.
