Graphing calculator - please

Does anyone know where I can get a graphing calculator for a good price? I just got a letter stating that I need one for my class. So expensive. Yuck.

Post on facebook that your looking for one. SO many people get them for one class ands then they sit around in the closet forever. Someone let me use theirs for my class, and then told me to pass it on, which I did after I was finished.

You often need to know what brand and model your teacher wants you to use. Since some models are programmable these days, the teacher may want you to download certain things or may only be able to help you set up a specific brand. An older model may not have the capabilities you require. Your school bookstore may have a special deal available on these. We purchased through Target and Staples once we had brand and model.

Just bought one for DS for Accelerated Math II. The teacher gave us a couple of models to choose from, and a couple not to buy. She was very specific as to which calculators she wanted in her class. We ended up buying it at Wal-Mart.

Just as the previous posters stated, the instructor may be very specific about the kind you get. Mine only wanted TI-82 or TI-84 because he had a computer program using that type of calculator and was to show us work on the screen using it. I bought mine from a student who had just taken the course and didn't need it anymore for $25. The teacher also suggested we check yard sales, pawn shops, etc so that we didn't have to pay full price.

That is a good suggestion. But, check with the instructor first on which model the course is being taught.

Not a good idea!! Most math professors forbid the use of communications devices (any type of cell phone) while in the classroom.

If you need a graphing cacluator, the big-box discounters or office supply stores should be your first stop -- otherwise, I would check the eBay market to see what they go for after a semester's worth of use.

I would defintely try a pawn shop or craigslist. I had to have a TI 82 back when I was in college. Now I use it as my everyday calculator and that was more than 10 yrs ago! DD loves to pretend it is a credit card machine and "swipe" cards with it!

I wish I could sell you my son's! I paid $94 for it at Target...25% off. It's the silver version of the Casio graphing calculator. Guess what, he has used it ZERO times this year!!!

At my college I think they rent them for the quarter at the bookstore and our library has been advertising some available for use so you might want to check those 2 places.

An iTouch still has access to email, notes, etc. All of which would potentially be forbidden in class and would almost definitely not be allowed in any type of exam. And based on the math classes I took in college the last thing you want going into an exam is to be trying to deal with a calculator you aren't familiar with.

I almost posted about this yesterday. As a previous poster indicated, it's an absolute "no" for most college professors - myself included. My syllabus says something along the lines of a calculator "A calculator must be a calculator." I have a "no electronic devices may be used in class" policy (with applicable exceptions for special needs students).
