Grandparent names

Grandma and Grandpa are for old people.

Dh and I are not old people lol.

My mom is Grandma First name. Dh's mom is Grandma First name. DHS dad is pawpaw his wife is Nanny. My mother's mom was Granny her father papaw

I much prefer nicknames.

And yes, our son tells our 15 month old grandson Mimi and Pops are here. Or look what Mimi and Pops brought you, etc.

And if grandson doesn't say our chosen grandparents names exactly, no big deal.

We will gladly be whatever he calls us. 💕

I never understood the idea of not calling grandparents anything until the child decides? So my daughter would tell grandson “Nana and Granddad are coming to visit”. How would you explain who these people are without names. Grandson has friends at preschool. He doesn’t get to name them either.

I think it is sad your Nana was forced to live a single life after her first husband died. Seems rather selfish of him depriving her of a choice.
It was absolutely selfish and set my Nana, my dad, and my uncle up for a tough life. It is not looked at as a kind request.

When my daughter was a baby, there was no need to say grandma or grandpa or anything else, once she got old enough she started calling him Papa and we went from there. There was never a situation where I had to be vague about where we were going or who we were seeing lol

So you never told your daughter "We're going to see Grandma & Grandpa" (using whatever names)? Or "Nana and Papa are coming over"? How/why did she decide to use Papa?

If you were never vague, what did you say?

Right. So that's what the discussion is about... I'm trying to choose what "original name" I'd like to go by.

OK. I was just meaning don't get super set on something, as kid might decide different. I mean, obviously everyone could continuously correct the kid, but most I know kind of liked getting a special name from the kid and just rolled with it.

So anyway, back to the discussion for your "original name," it should be Disney themed!

From what I remember (this is almost 26 years ago lol) no, when she was a few months old, we wouldn’t specifically say we’re going to see them. Once she was old enough I remember asking her if she wanted to say grandpa or papa or something else and she chose Papa. I don’t remember how old she was at the time.

My DH and I are Gram and Papa... although, on occasion, our oldest DGD (7) will say Pop with a sneaky giggle.

My maternal grandfather died before I was born, but I called both my maternal and paternal grandmothers "Grandmom" and my grandfather was "Grandpop".

For my kids my parents are Nonna and Pop, that's what my mom decided I should refer to them as when my oldest was born. My husband's parents didn't request anything specific as far as I remember and my kids call them Grandma and Papa.

My maternal grandparents were Grammy & Pappy (decided by older cousins) and my paternal grandparents were Grandma & Grandpa (again, decided by older cousins). DH & I are Gma & Gpa. I really like the names our friends use. When their son and his wife were pg with the first grandchild, they asked them what they wanted to be called. My friends husband half jokingly said he wanted to be called Sir (he's a big guy -- retired prison guard who dealt with violent inmates -- he looks very intimidating). The name stuck. Six grandkids later and they are still Mimi and Sir. :D

I vote for Zayde. Not that I have a vote 🤣
I'd like to do that to respect my father and grandfather. I'm just having doubts on whether I can live up to the name. My paternal grandmother was "Bubbe". When we announced we were pg with our oldest, my mom said she couldn't use "Bubbe" and became "Grammy".
