GRAND OPENING - GRAND CLOSING (Florida)

Gotcha. Yes, I hope it will make a difference. I noticed the restriction was only for 30 days but I hope that was just to get some people on board and they will extend it later.
For us we tend to just go to places where these things are more common. If people would just turn around and walk out of places that aren’t safe maybe business owners would stop looking the other way. Meijer had big signs announcing the mask requirement and greeters inside the doors. I think that’s about all it would take to get most people on board.

It’s more around 40% obese, but that’s still a huge number of people. About 10% of Americans are diabetic. Close to 50% have some kind of cardiovascular disease. Close to 10% have asthma. 15-20% are over 65- btw, the switch doesn’t flip at 65, it’s a graduating scale of risk. At any rate, clearly weeding out the less healthy isn’t a good solution. It’s ridiculous that we would ask those who don’t have a lifetime in front of them to spend their last years locked up so younger, healthier people don’t have to be bothered.
So many think they are immune but they are certainly not.

And there are a number of "younger and healthier" that are having a very slow and difficult recovery from Covid-19. Temporary? Permanent? In interviews with them what comes across to me is that they are understandably scared.

I do think that notifying that place why you walked out would be powerful, also.

I remember early how well Costco was doing early, but my last trip the woman checking out in front of me wasn't wearing her mask. GRRR.

Yes, I say lock up the people that don't want to wear a mask and social distance.
I wouldn't "lock up" people who don't wear masks because it would just dramatically increase illness in jails. But communities should have regulations and should enforce them.

Miami-Dade County has a mandatory mask requirement any time we are in public. Indoors, outdoors, it doesn't matter. If you are outside of your house, you wear a mask. And it is being enforced with fines.

We've also had hundreds of businesses cited for social distancing violations -- including one whose business license was permanently revoked and they were assessed a $15,000 fine. So that restaurant is closed for good because of repeated violations.

Costco should have thrown her out and revoked her membership. That's ridiculous.

Something like 40% of Americans are obese I believe? Add in anyone old who isn't, and anyone young who isn't but maybe has other lung diseases etc, yeah that's most Americans.

I don't know how they think they would have an economy left if the locked all those people up until the virus was gone entirely. Could still take years with no other precautions.

Edit to fix %

Disney is a beacon for super fans. If they open....those people will go. And I get understand that, we all do. But Disney knows their clientele. I saw a live feed yesterday from a couple of Disney bloggers in The Magic Kingdom. I'll admit, it looked really empty, but one couple that they spoke with should not have been there if they value...you know....continuing to live.

It was an older couple...maybe 60s I'd say. But both of these people were morbidly obese. At that age and weight, besides their weight, which is an underlying condition that makes them susceptible to catching the virus, I'd guarantee that they were likely diabetic, and suffer from varying degrees of heart disease and likely other conditions as well.

They seemed very happy to be there, but there is no doubt that they are risking their lives by being out with the public to that degree. All that I could think as I watched them was..."why not just wait a year?"

In light of having all our trips cancelled, we decided to spend the money on a travel trailer. ( Yes, we would’ve spent that much at Disney! Lol ) We’re shopping around and immediately ask the salesmen to put a mask on. All have complied with no problem. We also refuse to sit in their small offices to discuss prices and we don’t let them come inside the trailers to show us features. If any of them have a problem, we’d walk out. So far, they want our business enough that they are more than willing to comply. Let businesses know that how they handle this can cost them money.

Costco is my go to store now. We have 1 within a mile of our house. I’ve yet to see anyone without a mask on here. I’m very pleased with Costco’s response.

My bad, poor choice of words. I am responding to people that think those of us that feel mask are necessary, that we should just stay home. My stance is that if you don't want to wear a mask, why aren't you the ones that should stay at home?

How long has the mandatory mask requirement been in force? I like the fines for the businesses, but I'm assuming that is employers/employees not wearing masks. But are they walking up to people not wearing a mask in Walgreens and handing them a citation?

I was purely talking about the "75% obese" :goodvibes NOT trying to go into a "let's be healthier tangent" :teeth:

First, you're going to love your trailer!!! We have had a motorhome for over 20 years and I love "camping", so welcome!

Second, yes, it had been the only place I felt safe to go also. I have been fortunate that our daughter has done virtually all of our shopping except what I could do curbside. Last week, our infection rate in our city was down and I told my husband I wanted to go to Costco, just by myself (I need some alone time!) and shop there just like I used to, wandering the aisles. So thankful, I only saw that person when I left, but it has taken the fun out of my one shopping trip I'd done since March. 😥

People are going to WDW because they want to believe life is back to normal.
Bingo. I saw a post yesterday that said basically exactly that. The poster was happy to see Disney open because it means “we are finally getting back to normal.” This is the problem with nonessential businesses like Disney being open. For many people if something is open it means it must be okay and safe to go there and they should not have to worry or consider any risk. It is infuriating. I work for a cultural institution and some of the first arguments against closing back in March were basically that people would see they should stay home and would do that on their own but that didn’t happen - we were busy right up until the moment we closed and when we finally announced the closure people were calling furious about it. I kept arguing that we could not rely on people to make the right decision on their own and needed to take away their opportunity to put all of us at risk and just close.

Many people see Disney open and say “phew, we are getting back to normal” or think that if Disney is open things can’t be that bad as 10,000 new cases a day keep getting diagnosed in Florida.

This happened to me on Friday in Costco. Everyone coming in has the mask on. I was up hear the checkouts and some young woman just pulled hers down and started having a conversation with another woman she was shopping with. I can't tell you how much this infuriates me.

Our governor, this past week, talked about no letting our guard down. Doesn't want to become a "Florida" and said not to relax on the mask wearing. Then pointed out that you could go on the Dept. of Health website and report businesses where you are seeing no mask compliance or enforcement. I doubt one complaint will cause a problem, but if they see a pattern, I'm sure they'll do something. So I was in Target yesterday and there were four shoppers without masks (one was a family and they were hovering over in the in-store Starbucks waiting for their drink, and another was just a regular shopper. Call me a Karen, but I got home and sent of the notice on them.

If you include overweight, it is around 75%. I’m not pushing a get healthy agenda, just pointing out that the group of older/underlying conditions group is probably greater than the perfectly healthy group by far.

It depends on how the order is formulated but normally it's NOT just for employers/employees not wearing a mask. It's about them letting citizens go in without a mask too. Complaints made get investigated and if was found out the business was just not enforcing the mandate (as opposed to asking a person and them giving a valid reason allowable under an order's exemption list) then it would be whatever penalties have been set forth in the mandate. Some places may actually have fines handed out to citizens but not all.

Ohh ok well in that case yes I would probably agree when you consider all the various conditions the CDC has add. I also believe they reduced the BMI down to what 30? so that would add more people than previously. And pregnant women were added as well though being pregnant itself is not a 'healthy or not healthy' thing normally that is.
