GRAND OPENING - GRAND CLOSING (Florida)

Oh my. It's what many suspected. That's quite a list.

"Universal & Volcano Bay - several employees tested positive, some continued to work out of fear of losing their income. They have since removed all the chairs from the break room, forcing workers to eat standing up. photo comes from a guard who is tired of the working conditions"

yikes

Not surprised at all to see so many employees infected at Disney Springs. Disney is just getting warmed up. And I saw in this thread that several employees at Universal and Volcano bay tested positive....and continued to work due to fear of losing income. Since Florida's unemployment system is more of a joke than New Jersey's (and that's saying something)....I can completely see how employees will lie, and work sick....so they have some income.

Yea unemployment is a major joke for sure. My mother in law got furloughed in March and applied for unemployment in early April and still hasn’t gotten it. She’s repeatedly tried to contact people with no success. She was recently told by the place she worked (child care) that she wouldn’t be brought back at all because of her age and risk for COVID.

Yup...same here in NJ. So many people filed claims in March, April and beyond. And you can't speak with anyone. I filed in mid-March...wasn't able to certify until May. And while the state did give me back-unemployment to the date I flied, and the back PUA money from the federal government (the extra $600 per week), NJ has not contacted me to verify my income. I should be getting the max from NJ, which is $713, but instead I'm getting the minimum of $231. Our governor keeps saying that those of us who are self-employed/independent contractors/gig workers, will get every penny we're owed. I guess I'll believe it when I see it. I've still been completely unable to reach anyone by phone or email. It's not the end of the world in my house. My husband is still employed...we have resources, and we're fine. But, there are plenty of people who are not.

And when this $600 extra ends at the end of this month, we're going to see a whole lot of people struggling. In July a full 1/3 of Americans didn't make a house/rent payment. I feel like the economic pain is being largely hidden by.....the stock market. The markets are completely decoupled from the economic landscape at this point. The Federal Reserve essentially backstopped *everything*, including very high risk debt markets. They're printing money at an unprecedented rate. I understand why they did that, but it's really masking the underlying pain for the average American. And so what is happening is that the money that is being printed by the Federal Reserve, and separately, the loans/grants being shoveled out by the Federal Government (our tax dollars)....is being snapped up, and a lot of businesses, individuals and also entities like State pension funds that need to maintain gains....are chasing risk. And so up, up, up go the markets.

Always follow the money. The earnings being generated right now in no way, shape or form justify the levels in the markets. All of these chickens will come home to roost eventually. They always do.

You can’t expect businesses to make any decision other than what is best for that business which usually means revenue. Of course they’ll all stay open until 1) the government shuts them down or 2) they fear over public backlash impacting future revenues.

There’s a 3rd and to me, more likely option- That is that not enough people will be willing to travel to WDW during a raging outbreak to make keeping the doors open profitable. They aren’t going to stay open if in doing so they lose more than if they closed.

There’s already not so good signs- preview attendance was abysmal, they’re offering discounts already for resort stays and they apparently opened single day tickets sales at the gates today.

and for most states, the EUB runs out on July 25 , in lieu of July 31, because of the way the calendar breaks - my guess is that it's extended at some amount

Latest photos today show MK looks empty now.

On first day opening its empty by early afternoon. Not good!

The showers earlier may be part of the reason. Lots of people leave as soon as it starts to rain.
Exactly. Normally they may have gone home for a nap or food elsewhere and then park hopped elsewhere for the afternoon. Now with no hoppers its looking like people may just leave entirely for the day.

Where do they go? Just to sit in their hotel rooms?

It's nice to go back to the room and recharge in the quiet AC for a couple hours. Especially midday in the summer heat when it's raining. Returning to the park revitalized can make those last hours more enjoyable.
That’s true, but now that MK is closing at 7 it’s harder to do that. Its still pretty darn hot at 7 in FL, and I don’t know if I would want to make an effort to go back to the parks just to leave again in 2 hrs. Closing at 7 instead of 10 really puts a damper on the evening...I get why they are doing it though

Exactly. Plus what would they go back for? Rides have been almost walk on so probably done most of them once, and no evening entertainment either.
