GRAND OPENING - GRAND CLOSING (Florida)

Here's a local TV station report with a lot of daily detail for South Florida counties. In the day-by-day detail, you can see that the daily numbers bounce around quite a bit, so it's best to focus on trends rather than single-day numbers. The trend is bad, but not as bad as selective looks at particular days would indicate.

Also, we have to realize that Florida has increased our testing 50%. We were testing about 200,000 people a week, but for the last three weeks, we've been testing more than 300,000 per week. That accounts for some of the increase, but the positivity rates tell us it's a lot more than just more tests.

Florida added 11,433 new coronavirus cases this morning.
And it’s just going to get worse. The only question I have is whether or not FL has any limit on how many people can get this before they do anything to mitigate. I think I know the answer.

We should’ve been at the preview today. I had tickets. You couldn’t pay me to be there.

Its just bonkers that people see anything being open right now in FL as a good thing.

In my mind things being open just means the problem is prolonged even more.

Close everything. Let the numbers drop and hope on everything you have that when it comes to reopen again that the pace is sensible and people take it seriously.

None of these figures matter as long as we do not know if the people who aren't hospitalized stay at home or not and if their steps have been traced and the people wil they have been in contact with are notified and tested as well.
If out those 11K people, 99% does what they are supposed to, it is still 115 people roaming around with the chance of infecting others.

We do know that Disney is not providing tests, that's what the conflict with Equity is about. But is anything known about their procedure if a CM feels not 100% well? Is it stay home when you cough only once, get tested and wait for the results at home?

115 new for today, plus asymptomatic, plus the 1% tested yesterday etc

But positive rates are down so its all over right? That's what they seem to think in the rumour thread!
NO. First of all, that's not true unless you microscopically focus on whatever conforms to what you want to believe.

Secondly, it's not true at all if you look at the trends. Yesterday, Miami's positive rate decreased 6%, if you only look at yesterday. But it was below 5%, and yesterday it decreased to 20%!

Something we did in NYC in April was just to assume everyone you came into contact with has the virus.
I thought everyone was already doing that? Are there people who aren't? That's been the going advice for months all across the nation especially due to asymptomatic cases. Not exclusive to NYC at all. I know many of us on the Boards from all over have been doing this for months from all over the nation.

The people not wearing masks in Costco don't seem to be doing that.

That report is WAY off, according to the Florida Department of Health statistics quoted in the news story I posted above. Both our mayor and CNN tend to be hysterics on this issue, so I'd take their "news" with a grain of salt.

The situation is still bad, but not that bad.

Florida is not known to be reporting their statistics is any sort of truthful manner. Who the hell actual knows, other than the room in the ICU/hospital reports.

Just so you know, our mayor is a)running for Congress, and b) trying to create an army of contact tracers.

If past history is any guide, one of his sons will be CEO or lobbyist for the contact tracing company.

That's false. You're relying on the BS of one woman who was fired because of her criminal behavior outside of the workplace.

Actually fired twice -- once by LSU, and the second time by the State of Florida.

There seems to be some belief from NY (mostly NYC) that they are the only ones who have been through this. I’ve seen it here and from my own family who lives in the city. I have one cousin in particular who likes to explain things to me and can never grasp that many of the things he’s talking about, CA did first (or at least my area).

Now I get it - they got hit hard and lived in a perpetual nightmare and really are just starting to emerge from that haze, so truly may not have much idea what happened outside of their area. I get it. But it also gets frustrating at times.

Something we did in NYC in April was just to assume everyone you came into contact with has the virus. With 10k new cases every day (which we didn't really even have here, but it seems Florida does), you need to be that careful.

Waiting for the Disney branded bubble suit that is ride friendly with built in AC.

Here's what I'm talking about, from the public records of the criminal courts in Leon County, FL (Tallahassee). She also had felony arrests at LSU for assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest with violence.

Maybe Disney can have costumed characters enforce the mask rule. Who wants their picture on Instagram of Mickey Mouse or Captain Hook telling you to put on a mask?

The positivity rate coming down is definitely great news but with 11,000 plus new cases it is still a long way off from being anything close to manageable in Florida. I’ve also seen lots of reports of long waits for test results which makes things difficult - unless everyone is quarantining while waiting for results you can still have a lot of sick people mingling out in the world until they get confirmation that they are ill.

I know I am like a broken record with this but what worries me most is these high numbers in a state that has done almost nothing to roll back opening. With restaurants and stores and cafes open you have a lot of paycheck to paycheck workers under a lot of pressure to be at work in public facing roles unless they know with 100% certainty that they are ill and so you know that a lot of them are likely pushing the envelope and going to work when they should not be. And I can’t blame them for that - they need to make money and they don’t want to lose their jobs - but it makes for an incredibly dangerous situation when the virus is already spreading so wildly.
