Grand Gathering - Illuminations Dinner/Safari Dinner

We have 9 adults plus a 2year old traveling with us to WDW in September. I have been trying to get opinions on the grand gathering events. Specifically, the illuminations dinner/dessert reception and the safari dinner. My husband thinks that these events might too 'cheesy' for the adults. Any opinions??
Is the safari any different from the standard ride?

I've heard the illuminations dinner/dessert was "so so" so I passed; however, I was interested in the safari dinner. Unfortunately, they're not offering it ANY of the dates when we're in town so before you ponder too long you might want to call and see if there's any scheduled during your stay!
