Well, I guess the Medicare computer has already gone on furlough Just spent the last 45min on the phone going thru the different vru's and on hold. Only to be told, "we are sorry, the main computer is not available now"

I have a stack of claims on my desk processed incorrectly. Guess, they will be hanging around for awhile.

That's a bit harsh. I think all of us are mostly seeing how this shutdown would affect us and those close to us. I have no one I am close to in the military so their issues are not as close to my heart. I am sure that someone in the military doesn't really care as much about my problems with the shutdown as well. We are all somewhat myopic. The problems in my back yard are always worse than other people's problems.

I was not revering to anyone specific on this board, and I did not mean it to be an insult. Of course everyone has a relatively myopic view of their world. All I was saying is not to forget all the other non-military workers that this affects.

IMHO, when you start talking about ensuring that the military is covered until the end of the FY, you are sending a message that the civilian-oriented government organizations are less important than the military.

You can't compare one to the other. The military families are asked to make many many sacrifices for very little pay as it is. Most federal employees are not being asked to put their life at risk. I agree that it sucks that they are in the same boat but it is not the same.

Just got word that VA employees will not have any disrutption in work or pay during government shut down because they have advanced appropiations. Thank goodness I really was starting to worry. I'm not sure if people on vacation or have vacations will be paid for there time off. For all others my thoughts are with you and hope all can be resolved in the next 15 hours so no one has to suffer.

Idled federal workers can apply for unemployment compensation from the states in which they work, and the federal government would pick up the tab. Tell that to Secret Service Officers or Diplomatic Security Officers or FBI Agents or any of the thousands of people that are responsible for keeping those people alive. And then tell the contractors that write the systems that enable these people and the military to perform their jobs. Or how about the air traffic controls that are responsible for thousands of lives?

The truth of the matter is that all agencies and government workers are important. Is there dead weight? Absolutely!, but you can find that in any large bureaucratic enterprise.

And then tell the contractors that write the systems that enable these people and the military to perform their jobs. Good post. Don't forget all the Transportation Security Administration personnel that keep our airports and airlines safe. As said, all essential government workers are important.

Well my DH checked with his CPT that active duty military leave WILL NOT be affected, and I also call DFAS and confirmed this so our Disney trip is on. They also reported that we will get half our pay , then if this all gets worked out within the following week (which I believe it will) they will pay the rest the following week. Praying for all the families (especially those with deployed soldiers) who are going to be strapped by this!

My DH is in the guard; he's a pilot for the congressmen and senators here in D.C.. His unit is made up of active duty and non-active duty employees (technicians). The active duty members who are paid by the DOD will not lose their job but my husband and the others who are "goverment employees" will. They have a meeting tomorrow about it. I'm really trying hard not to freak out yet but it looks like it may happen. It's hard to believe.... my husband was flying Nancy Pelosi to Rome 2 weeks ago and next week he may not even have a job. We're in the same boat. DH is in the Guard and also a federal technician for the Guard. We'll get the next paycheck on-time according to DFAS since the current pay period for technicians ends this Sat. but after that, who knows? DH had a meeting at work yesterday and they were told that if the shutdown happens, they will be furloughed and to go apply for unemployment as soon as the office opens on Monday morning. Any pay earned before the shutdown (if it happens) will still be paid as scheduled.

A relative of mine out in AZ works for the census (permanently) and is not sure if she will have work to go to on Saturday. I feel for you all!

I'm relieved to see that my federal tax refund went in today (direct deposit) as I was concerned about it being slowed up.

Let's keep hoping this is resolved soon...the Tea Party is shooting themselves in the foot IMHO, they have NO kind of mandate!

yes you can compare. your difficulties are not in any significant way different from the civilians who will not get paid.

We thankfully won't have any difficulties. My point was that for the military is a slap in the face specially after asking them to fight 3 wars. I do not think is ok for all the deployed soldiers to have to worry about how their families are going to eat. Just last week a lot of our friend found out that their 7 month deployment is going to be 10 to 11 months instead. They shouldn't have to worry about this. I feel for the federal employees too no one should have to be in this situation. My point was that the job that the military does is very different than those of the federal employees.

My federally employed hubby is risking his life in Iraq as I type this. There are many government employees that are put in harm's way. I agree that "most" are not, but there are those that do it every single day of their lives not just overseas in Iraq but here in America.

You didn't read my second post. I was just saying the two types of jobs do not compare not that they aren't as important.
