Government shut down will affect you

DH is DoD civilian and he has been told he will get his full check next week as usual, since the pay period ends tomorrow.

From DFAS website

Civilians
Civilian employees will be paid on the regular pay date for that portion of duty performed prior to the expiration of the most recent CRA (employees will be paid for duty performed through April 8). Once another CRA or an appropriations act is signed into law, normal disbursement of pay will resume for pay earned after employees return to work. For furloughed employees, Congress will have to provide authority for retroactive payments to be made.

Q1. Will I get paid for my past work?
DoD Civilians will be paid for each day worked through Friday, April 8. Because the normal pay period ends Saturday April 9, this will usually equate to a full paycheck.

I assume other agencies will be similar.

Since today is the end of his pay period, I would think he would get his full check on payday--is it direct deposit? I know the IRS isn't handling paper, so payroll may not be either. Good luck.

Yes, it's direct deposit. I guess we'll know 100% for sure on the 18th!

In my office they have certified the payroll for this pay period early and they have sent it off so we can get paid. However they are warning us that they don't know whether the office that is responsible for paying us will have time to take their action today. Therefore they are not sure whether we will get pain on the 15th.

I am sure it WILL be painful. LOL I know it's just a typo, but it is so funny considering the subject matter.

Our pay period ends tomorrow and we were told we would get paid on the 21st as usual. Plus, if there is a shutdown, we'll get a 1/2 day pay (eventually) for showing up Monday for the 1/2 day.

Starting to look more and more like there will be one. There's still 7.5 hours left, but not much reported movement this afternoon.

Yes, direct deposits of all federal civil service paychecks should go through, as normal.

Furthermore, as tomorrow is the official end day of the 7th pay period of 2011 for non-military federal employees, those people will see a normal paycheck on their usual payday (which normally falls between Friday, April 16 and Monday, April 19).

It's the payday that is scheduled to occur 2 weeks afterwards where all these things will come into play...

This was just sent to me so I wanted to share. It is from DFAS.

Due to the potential shutdown of the federal government, we have "taken down" all Leave and Earnings Statements (LESes) or "Advice of Pays" for Active Duty Military and Reservists. We will re-post LESes when we receive more information on the shutdown or enacted legislation that authorizes pay beyond April 8. Assuming this authority becomes available, we anticipate paying both active and reserve members their full pay for duty served from April 1-15 on April 15.

Thanks for posting that wtccheermom. I saw the paycheck earlier today and it was not a full check that's for sure. I was wondering how would they know to only pay till the 8Th when the shut down didn't happen yet and pay day isn't till the 15.

This sucks. Just my opinion, they are going to be shutting down. They don't live in the real world. They are getting paid so they don't care. It is just kindergarteners whining they are not getting their way. Blame game over and over.

DH and I were arguing over the phone because he was told he will be taking his leave as planned on Monday (leave Sunday night). He said no military leave was canceled, only civilian leave. I don't think that is the case. If they shut down and he comes home he isn't going to get paid. That is how I see it.

Ugg. Frustrating trying to known what to do. We have our Disney trip planned in a little over a week. I will have to cancel the trip soon but probably as soon as I do they will say we will get paid. UGGGG!

That stinks!!! I think both sides just need to figure it out and while I do not want to turn this in to a political debate shutting down the government over something like PP insane. I understand both sides are passionate about their causes but for goodness sake think of all the military and federal employees who are being directly affected by this. I am so ashamed of our politicians right now. I am no politician but maybe instead of defunding them they could just draw back some of the funding and then it is a win win for both sides. I hope you get to go on your trip!!

Wow--thanks DFAS for adding even *more* uncertainty to our lives.

Waiting for pay
Waiting for "official orders"
Waiting to see if I have to cancel the girls birthday trip to Disney and lose a lot of money

Can I go throw up now?

Me too--We have trip insurance, but I am not sure how that works and I know it doesn't cover the flights, so there is a lot of money just thrown away.

DD8 has been very involved in planning this trip, even in making up a journal that she can keep there to give her teacher when we get back. She is so looking forward to breakfast with Mary Poppins. She has her plans for World Showcase on her birthday, and has figured out what girl scout badges she can work on while we are there. I don't want to have to disappoint her. DD25 has the vacation time from work, and she won't be able to change that if we reschedule for another time.

The whole thing, caused by a bunch of supposed adults acting like spoiled little brats who don't care who they hurt as long as they get their own way has me boiling.

this is huuuuuuuuge. It will snowball and it is bad as so many people live paycheck to paycheck and after all many operation would stop completly not only for couple of weeks. it is domino.

not to mention how many people will just stop spending being scared and this wille ffect economy even further.

My husband's business relies on people being able to get mortgages. With FHA being a huge insurer, it will slow his business down if people can't get FHA backed loans.

We're due to close on our own mortgage (non-FHA), and it's an underwriting requirement that they get notification from the IRS that our tax payment has been received. Just seeing it clear our checking account isn't enough, so I have no idea how it will impact us. It could delay our closing, or cause our loan to fall through, since all underwriting requirements won't have been met.

I was going to play hookie this week and take DD12 to Philadelphia to meet a friend and her DD (they were to drive down from NY). We were going to do all the historical stuff (Liberty Bell; Independence Hall, etc). Well I guess they will all be closed. I have to redo our itinerary.
