Government shut down will affect you

not to mention how many people will just stop spending being scared and this wille ffect economy even further.

I have bought nothing but essentials since last pay, and very little the pay before that with the fear that this was coming.

Yes, direct deposits of all federal civil service paychecks should go through, as normal.

Furthermore, as tomorrow is the official end day of the 7th pay period of 2011 for non-military federal employees, those people will see a normal paycheck on their usual payday (which normally falls between Friday, April 16 and Monday, April 19).

It's the payday that is scheduled to occur 2 weeks afterwards where all these things will come into play...

Thank you for the information. Now to see what happens tonight and see the impact on everyone. I hope no one has to cancel trips.

I was going to play hookie this week and take DD12 to Philadelphia to meet a friend and her DD (they were to drive down from NY). We were going to do all the historical stuff (Liberty Bell; Independence Hall, etc). Well I guess they will all be closed. I have to redo our itinerary.

I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that those particular activities were managed by either Philadelphia historical societies, the city itself, or Pennsylvania state -- check in to it :)

This may have been mentioned already (sorry, haven't read all the posts) but if a shutdown does occur, there will be no death benefits for military, either.

I saw this earlier and was wondering if it would have an impact on my veterans widows death pension check I receive each month.. Hopefully it won't, but who knows? At this point I suppose anything is possible..:sad2:

I haven't read through the last few pages tonight so if this has already been posted sorry.

Several federal/military related banks/credit unions are preparing to assist their members affected. So if you have an issue make sure you contact your bank.

Hang in there everyone hopefully everything is resolved in a couple hours. :grouphug:

It appears that there won't be a shutdown at midnight! An "agreement" has been made/ Of course now they need to begin hashing out 2012 budget but at least it looks like all of us Military and civillian Fed employees will be getting paid at least until they disagree for the next years budget.

I am supposed to be getting a federal subsidized student loan on April 13th. I wonder if this will be coming? I really need the money for books and tuition!

Well, I jumped the gun, this is just for another week....:headache:

Wait, is this for real?

I am so confused!

Awesome work Washington does. :thumbsup2 Gets the Oct 2010 budget passed in April 2011 with 7 extensions, 5 months before it expires and 1 hr shy of shutting down the govt. :cool1: :worship:

I would be fired.

I think you are right on this. We should (active military) not be affected by this as far as taking leave. My husband is going to double check, but since we arent being furloughed (we just arent being paid) we do not fall under this. It is geared toward national guard. Hoping you and I are right. We have enough savings to carry us through this, but hopefully it should work out today

I don't know if you have seen it or not but USA Cares if going to offer assistance if pay is disrupted. This will hopefully help some with the stress of feeding their families and paying the necessities.

Their recommendation (not directed at you) is one that so many should follow - "Nelson also warned against making large purchases, encouraging a thrifty lifestyle and an eye toward savings while pay is disrupted. Families who do not have a savings cushion to fall back on especially need to monitor finances closely, Nelson said." This is from our local newspaper.

Also from that article-

Tips for military families in case of a shutdown:

1. Notify your financial institutions immediately and make arrangements to pay your automatic bills.

2. Save. Now is a bad time to make a big purchase.

3. Taxes: You still have to pay Uncle Sam, even if he doesn’t pay you. Filing an extension is just one possibility. Don’t count on that refund check anytime soon.

4. Be careful of short-term loans and extremely high interest payday loans. Go to your existing financial institution for help first.

5. Seek local charities for food and basic needs, such as chaplains, churches, food banks or the American Red Cross.

They have tipped their hands in ways that won't soon be forgotten. Military members and their families won't forget that they were considered expendable.

Exactly. Military pay was a bargaining chip used on both sides of the aisle and I find that horrible. The livelihood of the men and women of the Armed Services should never be used as leverage to pass your agenda.

That's a very broad brush and bordering ignorant. My DH is Active Duty and I am a SAHM. We DO NOT qualify (not even close) for EIC and we too pay "thousands upon thousands of dollars in federal income tax". No, our medical care isn't "free". It is an insurance system that we pay into every month, and while generally it is a good system, it absolutely has it's own set of negative attributes.

And while, yes, I agree that political posturing isn't going to help anyone at this stage of the game, it is disheartening to hear that young families, some who are separated by half of the globe, will have trouble buying groceries next week if those on Capitol Hill don't get their collective heads out of their patooties. We will scrambling to help provide for young families in our squadron who will need help to pay the mortgage or rent if this doesn't come to a conclusion soon. Not to mention the 100 or so "non-essential" civilian workers in the squadron who won't even get back pay during a furlough.

Just curious but when did Military members have to start paying into TriCare?? I know that retirees and survivors of deceased active duty soldiers have to pay their yearly premiums for Tricare prime but never heard of soldiers having to pay into it?? Is this new this year??

Yes, if you go off post for treatment than you have a copay but again just wondering.

:thumbsup2 finally they reached a decision if you ask me they all should be fired if any of us were to pull something like this in our jobs we will be fired. Until Thursday anyway...

If I could pull our LES right now I would, but the system is currently down. We have always paid for Tricare. It comes out of his pay just like taxes and SSI. Now, I will concede that it isn't an astronomical sum, but we still pay it every month. While the costs may be lower than most, sometimes that comes at a high price...like choice.

You do not pay anything for Tricare Prime put of your LES. The only thing that comes out of his pay is United Concordia Dental. If you have Standard, you pay a portion of your medical care, but do not have to get referrals and can see whatever doctor you want.

Retirees pay a premium for Tricare.
