Government shut down will affect you

You know ssawka, I think I owe you an appology.

You didn't read my second post. I was just saying the two types of jobs do not compare not that they aren't as important.

You came across as saying that ONLY MILITARY families make sacrifices.....

My husband did 12 years active duty, then finished his time in the reserves. He has been employed with the FBI as an agent for 12 years now....TRUST me we make HUGE sacrifices. He has been to Iraq 3 times and is there now. He deployed a lot in the military but HE has been gone more with the FBI in these 12 years than our 12 years in the military.

MY Point.....you can't LUMP all federal employees in one basket and say that because they are NOT risking their lives....it wouldn't be a hardship on them if they didn't get paid....if the shut down occurs. Not every government employee is MAKING the big bucks. We have a friend nextdoor that works for the FBI as support staff ...TRUST ME...not getting paid WOULD be a hardship on her too. You can't justify saying because people work for the gov't.. that they are better off or make more money and it would not affect them as much as a military family...or that they don't sacrifice as much.

I feel VERY BADLY for the military families.....it is a terrible thing for them to not have their paychecks to make ends meet. This shut down will be a TERRIBLE CRISIS for MANY MANY MANY people not just military families.

This'll effect our trip to DC as well. My dd won the White House Easter Egg Roll on the 25th. We didn't really have the $$ budgeted but felt like this was a 'once in a lifetime' deal since 1) It was a lottery draw and 2) she'll be 12 in the fall. How disappointing and expensive it's going to be if it's all closed!
And no, we didn't buy insurance for our flights or hotel..:scared1:

We did not win the lottery but had planned a trip to DC that week any way. Everything is refundable except our Easter brunch cruise on the Potomac. If we want to change plans we need to do it now but I just don't know if we should give them more time. My husband says I better find a lounge chair on the beach for him somewhere if the Smithsonian isn't open because he is not going to DC unless it is. I really hope they decide tonight.

Well, I guess the Medicare computer has already gone on furlough  Just spent the last 45min on the phone going thru the different vru's and on hold. Only to be told, "we are sorry, the main computer is not available now":mad::mad:

I have a stack of claims on my desk processed incorrectly. Guess, they will be hanging around for awhile.:rolleyes1

Not sure where you are located but Medicare Intermediaries/Carriers vary state to state or locale.:surfweb:

Ours is up and running right now.
Their employees work for that insurance company, which normally has enough 'other' business to carry them in the different lines of business.

Unless it's a system error and they've issued an alert, I'd be more concerned with my processes if I had a large volume of denials..........
RED FLAG

I never said that because they are not risking their lives it wouldn't be a hardship on them. Or that only military families make sacrifices both of those things are assumption that you made. I said that deployed soldiers shouldn't have to worry about what their families are going to eat, because that is a distraction and it is not fair to ask them to do both they should be able to focus. As I said before NO ONE should be put in this situation. The difference is that ALL the military make this sacrifices not ALL federal employees fall in the category that they risk their lives or are deployed so again it is not a comparison each job is different no one said one is better than the other those are assumptions.
I never talk about salaries at all so that is putting things that I didn't even mention. And as you said your DH make all this sacrifices but he WILL be getting paid the military will not.

I just got official notice that I am an excepted employee...looks like i'll be forced to pay for gas and parking everyday just to work without pay. I coulda swore slavery was illegal...

Saw this on Facebook this morning... awesomeness!

If Congress shuts down the federal government, Washington would still end up paying hundreds of thousands of employees who are sent home.

Idled federal workers can apply for unemployment compensation from the states in which they work, and the federal government would pick up the tab.

I checked on this. You have to qualify in the jurisdiction where your latest duty office is. For me, that's the District of Columbia. DC requires you to prove you are looking for work while you are receiving unemployment. I don't plan to look for work. I already have a job.

From the HamptonRoads.com website, "If a deal is reached, Obama is expected to visit Williamsburg with first lady, Michelle, and daughters Malia and Sasha. On Thursday, the White House canceled a trip Obama had scheduled this morning at a plant in Indianapolis where hybrid vehicle transmission parts are made. The White House said in a statement Thursday that it was a "long-planned family trip."

See? Even the President and his family could be affected by this possible government shutdown.

Let's hope the budget deal is reached soon, so the President and family can visit Williamsburg, VA this weekend.
What a bunch of crap. The working people can't take 25 vacations a year like they do and someone else pays for it. Must be nice.

You know ssawka, I think I owe you an appology.

Appology accepted. Perhaps my words were not clear in my first post. This is just a sad, sad situation for everyone involved. I wish you all the resilience to weather the storm. :goodvibes

Saw this quote on another board!!!

Obama could ensure military pay through an Executive Order, seems to me he is one holding military pay hostage.

Wonder what's stopping him?

Wonder what's stopping him?

The fact that that isn't something that he can legally do in an executive order? Budget has one and only one legal way to be done. It can't be bypassed.

LES is up, and it isn't pretty! Enjoy your half a paycheck!

Yes half pay hopefully they will get this settled soon.

And please let's not make this a military vs fed employee thing many of us are going to be hurting we don't need to turn against each other too...

I know for my husband, today ends the current pay period with his next check due April 18th. Does anyone know if that deposit will get issued or not? I haven't read anything where that issue was addressed. I expect not to get paid during the furlough for work not done but what about work that has been done already? If they don't pay employees then some will go a lot longer without a pay check.

Since today is the end of his pay period, I would think he would get his full check on payday--is it direct deposit? I know the IRS isn't handling paper, so payroll may not be either. Good luck.
