Government shut down will affect you

If any of you people can't last more than a week without a paycheck a government shutdown is the least of your problems.

OUCH! Some people are doing the best they can with what they have:sad2:

Officially, that will be up to congress. The opinions I've been reading don't look good for back pay. Without getting too political, in this climate, I'm afraid many politicians will find it difficult to vote for any pay for employees who didn't work.

:lmao:, They seem to have no issues with paying themselves for the "not working" part:rolleyes1.

I didn't hear it all but the house passed a week long extension including military pay for the year. Maybe good news! Let's hope the Senate will pass it too.

We just applied for passports for 3 of our 4 kids for a trip the first of June. If the shutdown lasts too long, we may not have passports. We could use the kids birth certificates to at least get them on the ship, but the birth certificates are currently with the passport applications. :rolleyes1

Dh came home today to share some of the latest discussions on the topic at work. He is fairly certain that his area will be exempt from the furlough, whih is a good thing:goodvibes.

The new issue, however, is that there is a possibility that those who are exempt can't take regular medical or personal leave. If they do, the furlough will kick in. Of all times...we are planning a short trip to FL over spring break. If we don't get back-pay, we'll survive, somehow, for those three days.

What nobody can answer is whether or not the furlough (brought on my the vacation leave) will end as soon as they return to work OR if they get kicked into the general furlough...meaning no pay until everyone returns to work.
If this is the case, he certainly can't risk no pay for an unknown amount of time, so he will have to skip the trip. Thank goodness this isn't a Disney trip, or something else that we had paid thousands to take.

None of them have any idea if they are really exempt or not. They won't know until they show up for work Monday morning.

This is a nightmare. It would be easier if we knew all the rules and could mentally prepare. But nobody seems to really know what will happn.

Terrible situation.

My relative luckily has plenty in savings but they will be exempt anyway as essential personnel.
The bad part for them is if they take a day off even sick leave or scheduled vacation day? They automatically are furloughed. That encourages people to come to work sick.

Although truthfully with the economy now days there are a few businesses out there who haven't been able to make payroll once in a while.

Guess I'm slow at typing, same as PP above.

My relative (who has been with the same division of the govt for 20+ years) says they were told that if you take one day off you go on furlough.....until it ends. It's a gamble to see if they will be able to give back pay.
Some states (mine included) have been requiring one day a month furlough without pay for quite some time now.

I don't think it's a matter of taking leave and then "kicking in" to the furlough. It doesn't really work that way.

If you are excepted or essential - meaning you have to work - you cannot take leave. That information is in a number of the posts and links above. All leave is cancelled. Scroll up to post #167 from Hoodie where he quotes the OPM rules on leave.

OPM sent out guidance that all approved leave is cancelled if we shut down....it directly affects a couple of my guys who paid for cruises (and one Disney Vacation)....

**Edited**

Beaten to the punch...sorry, didn't read every post, but the OPM quotes are correct...

Wouldn't you love to be a Marine on Patrol in Helmand Province...all the risk, none of the pay (yet of course, but still)

The way it was explained to my relative who has a scheduled day off coming up is if it's taken they will be furloughed and someone will do their work for them. If they don't take the day they will come to work as usual.

Their boss has been with this part of the government for 40+ years and they all have been through the furloughs in the 90's.

My husband finally got a detailed email tonight around 7pm including a web site to look up info. He'll know more tomorrow by noon. At least we have some answers but we won't be going anywhere for a while. And I have a nice to-do list for him to tackle.

I dont understand how this "no leave" even effects the military? We aren't being Furloughed, we just arent being paid. Why are they cancelling our leave on top of not paying us. I'm heartbroken over this. On top of not being paid, our vacation is about to be cancelled ;( My husband hasnt taken leave all year long. So sad :(

Hmm... Our leave has not been cancelled?? We leave on Monday for Disney and we are good to go???

We are also military and I'm not worried about us personally. I have money in savings and credit cards I can use, but I worry about those who are lower rank who live paycheck to paycheck. I remember how hard it was when my hubby first enlisted, I can't imagine having to live on half of that :headache:

I am really worried about the families of the deployed soldiers here. I know many of our county schools will do what they can for families plus there are 2 places to get assistance with food. The worry for these families with their spouses deployed on top of the worry about finances is just hard. I so hope that the Senators and Congressman can get stuff worked out.

I am sorry about your vacation and pay. I completely understand as my DH is in the military as well. We have had numerous leaves postponed. I see you are moving to Germany in June. We are supposed to go as well. I say "supposed" because his orders should be coming any day. Who knows how this mess will affect those? We are moving to K-town. Good luck!! And many hugs.

My DH is active duty army. He recently returned from Afghanistan. He is in KY right now but we (me, ds 11 and ds 6) live in PA. He is supposed to come home on the 11th and we are go to go Disney on the 19th.

So, he might still be able to come home and not get paid which means we really shouldn't go to Disney. Or he might not be allowed to come home at all wich means definitely no Disney trip. Plus we are supposed to be staying at Shades of Green for some of our stay which I don't even know if it will remain open or not.

I am just glad I didn't tell the boys we are going to Disney in April. It is supposed to be a birthday suprise. We will be able to switch it to summer time maybe. I was just so excited to be there for DS birtdhay.

I know 2 kids who are going to be quite upset not to see their dad if he doens't come home. This doesn't suprise me though. It is always one thing or another screwing up our plans as far as the military goes.

I believe Shades of Green is MWR funded which is not tax related. It should remain open.

DH is supposed to come home Monday and we are to go to Disney next Thursday. It doesn't look like that is gonna happen  We have the money to go to Disney, but we can't chance it in case he doesn't get paid when we get back.

What happened with the bill to still pay military if the government shuts down? Did it get vetoed? I haven't heard anything about it so I assume it didn't pass.

yes !! "supposed" to anyway! I've heard all PCS moves will come to a stand still :( My hubby is "supposed" to be leaving for Ranger school in 2 weeks as well.. so my life has come to a halt :( Semper gumby right? I tried to explain to my 8 and 5 year old what is going on , their response " I just dont get it mom!" "Me either kids, me either :("

The no leave direction we have came from OPM, and at least in our case, is not directed at the military...

They may have a different directive..

I am so sorry. Our trip isn't until the end of the month and I am really hoping they have things worked out by then. We have trip insurance, but we are still going to lose a lot of money if we have to cancel.

So I guess it is going to happen. :grouphug: for everyone that is going to be affected by this and for those who have to cancel vacations I am sorry.
