Government shut down will affect you

http://thehill.com/blogs/on-the-mon...would-affect-broad-swath-of-federal-functions
This says military will get back pay but not as schedule but they expect them to keep working :confused3

Military members have no say. They are property of the USG and have an obligation to still deploy, work, and do what ever else they have been ordered to do come he!! or high water. My husband is an AD SMO and we were told that he will not be paid if they are shut down. I believe that this will affect my pay as well since I also work for the Military at the hospital:headache:. I thank God that we have other means of getting what we need.

Funny how they(congress, senate) don't care since they will still get their money:mad:

It will be sad if it comes down to this. My DH is a federal civilian but he is required to work (and he'll get paid) as his job is considered mission critical (he is a fire fighter). However, he if it does happen and is still in progress at Easter, he'll have to cancel his leave or he won't be paid for the time off. I hope the government gets their act together and it doesn't happen.

I know military have no say DH is military. We will still get back pay.I still feel is a disgrace not to pay our military that works so hard and make so many sacrifices. Specially those deployed talk about slap in the face.

Actually if he's an essential employee his leave will be canceled. He will not be allowed to take leave during the furlough time period. If he does not show up he is considered AWOL.

My DH is in the guard; he's a pilot for the congressmen and senators here in D.C.. His unit is made up of active duty and non-active duty employees (technicians). The active duty members who are paid by the DOD will not lose their job but my husband and the others who are "goverment employees" will.:sad2: They have a meeting tomorrow about it. I'm really trying hard not to freak out yet but it looks like it may happen.:sad1: It's hard to believe.... my husband was flying Nancy Pelosi to Rome 2 weeks ago and next week he may not even have a job.:scared1: Good luck to everyone else who's on the chopping block.:sad2: April

According to www.news12.com:

"What a government shutdown means
Federal agencies are in danger of shutting down if an agreement is not reached by midnight Friday on a budget. A shutdown would affect many services considered non-essential and could have a wide-ranging economic impact.
Services that WOULD be affected:

The Internal Revenue Service would suspend processing paper tax returns, but would still handle electronic returns. Its tax hotline would be turned off and tax audits would be suspended.

The FHA, which guarantees about 30 percent of home mortgages, would stop guaranteeing loans. The White House says the issuance of government-backed loans to small businesses would be suspended.

National parks would be closed.

The Environmental Protection Agency would cease issuing permits and stop reviewing environmental impact statements which will slow approval of projects.

U.S. military personnel would not get paid beyond Friday. However, they will continue to earn money that would be paid once the government resumes business.

Passport offices will be closed.

Staffing across the executive branch will be cut significantly, including workers at the White House and civilian employees at the Defense Department. The White House says about 800,000 workers will be affected.

At the National Institutes of Health, groundbreaking medical research would experience a disruption. Patients already being treated at the facility in Bethesda, Md., would still get care, but new patients won't be admitted. No new studies of drugs or other treatments would begin.

Federal courts will not hear cases as employees such as clerks, stenographers, bailiffs and security guards will not be at work.

Most government websites won't be updated, unless the websites and information was considered to be essential.

Services NOT affected:

Under long-standing federal rules, agencies would not be affected that provide for U.S. national security, dispense most types of federal benefit payments, offer inpatient medical care or outpatient emergency care, ensure the safe use of food and drugs, manage air traffic, protect and monitor borders and coastlines, guard prisoners, conduct criminal investigations and law enforcement, oversee power distribution and oversee banks.

Social Security and Medicare beneficiaries will still continue to receive benefits. Payments to doctors, hospitals and other service providers could be delayed, however, should a shutdown continue for several months.

Mail will still be delivered.

Agreed--and back pay doesn't help paying current bills. Or bank fees when the automatic deductions bounce. But then, congress gets paid so they don't need to care about the people who ensure their freedom. Things haven't changed a bit since Kipling:

For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!

I don't get a refund, I have to pay. Just a lowly taxpayer here.

My check cleared. So paid in full.

We will be affected as DH is AD Navy. He will go to work and "earn" his paycheck but won't collect it until the government decides its time. Unless they pass the bill to continue to pay Military. Luckily, we live on base, so hopefully we won't have any late fees for rent not being paid. :lmao: We have enough in savings to make it for about 2 months. It will be tough and if it lasts any longer then that we're screwed.:headache:

Unfortunately, if his agency is funded through annual appropriations, he won't get paid until the shutdown is over, even if he is essential.

Not according to the Pentagon. My husband got official notice through the Army today to only expect to be paid through the 8th. I don't know where you got your information, but it isn't correct.

My Dh is AD and was told the same official notice. His pay will only be for April 1-8. Bad timing but we will dip into savings:sick:

So sorry you are dealing with this:hug::hug:

Another military DH who will have to work, but won't get paid if it happens. They'll get back pay later.

Last time I remember this happening years ago, they collected Unemployment Benefits, then had to pay those back when it was all settled. Just a mess.

We live on base too, but with privatized housing and the leases we had to sign, I wonder how bad they are going to stick it to us for late payment. If the govt still owned the housing I wouldn't worry beyond no repairs and no maintenance, but with privatization...

DH will be furloughed starting Monday, which sucks because he just started this job last week so we've been living off of savings for two weeks already :headache:.

Heck my husband is DEPLOYED and I'm not sure if they will pay them all the 'deployment' pay they are due when something DOES pass.......

It will be sad if it comes down to this. My DH is a federal civilian but he is required to work (and he'll get paid) as his job is considered mission critical (he is a fire fighter).

My husband is also a DOD civilian firefighter, so he will be working his shifts regardless of what happens. I hope they can work the budget out soon, its not right to furlough federal workers for something they can not control.

I'll be praying for you and your husband--it is the deployed guys I am really worried about, they don't need this kind of distraction.

Hmmm so if the government is not operating and providing its services to the citizens do we get to deduct the time off of our income tax? Perhaps that should be the law, USG shuts down for a week, we get a free week from income tax… Ok back to reality…
