Gotta vent...do people READ things first??

Gotta vent a little (in a good natured way), just for the halibut...

I've got a few posts here, but on the another (non-Disney) discussion board I've got a few thousand posts. The community there is notably smaller (as if that's a stretch :) ), and pretty adamant about reading existing threads first before firing off questions. Soo....

Do people on the Rent/Trade board read ANYTHING before posting? I browse through there every few days, mainly for the "train wreck" type viewing, it just amazes me...

Title: "100 points for rent, $11 firm."
First post: "I need a reservation, will you take $10 a point?"

Title: "50 points available for transfer."
First post: "Hi, I'd like to rent your points."

Another recent post: "I'm a DVC member and would really like to transfer some points to my account for a vacation...if we're allowed to transfer." (That one really got me...how do you get that far in DVC ownership without knowing some of the base rules?)

It seems somebody is always wanting to rent and get a MYW "Package" as if The Mouse himself is running the rentals.

I know I'm about to open/re-open a can of worms. (And probably a good chance there's a thread some where *I* should have read first :teeth: ) But, for the sake of conversation, and to satisfy my own curiosity on why folks think the best thing to do is just ask rather than see if the answer already exists, I thought I'd blurt this out there...

Flame away. :)

I read an article at lunch on cnn.com about patience or the lack there of of americans. We all want everything right now....we don't want to research anything for ourselves anymore, we just want to be told the answer now...

I pulled this text from that article, it's a summary of the point they were making:

OVERALL

Average time people wait in line in a store or office before losing patience: 17 minutes.

Average time they wait on the phone before losing patience: 9 minutes.

GENDER
Average time women were willing to wait in line before losing patience: 18 minutes.
Men: 15 minutes.

EDUCATION AND INCOME
College graduates and people with household incomes of $75,000 a year or more said 15 minutes -- on average.
Those with some college and incomes of $50,000 to $75,000 said 19 minutes on average.

URBAN VS. SUBURBAN
City dwellers can wait an average of 15 minutes before getting cranky
Suburbanites get irritated after 18 minutes on average.

I so agree with you! It also bugs me when members come to the DVC boards and ask incredibly simple questions that could easily be found in their membership guide. The detail things are different, but you really SHOULD know that you CAN bank, borrow, or book at the 11 month and 7 month windows.

My favorite is still the "Can I Get Free Dining When I Rent Points?"

For some reason, that seems like such a no-brainer & every time I read it here I just want to scream...... :furious:

Kick Save,

Reading your post, it makes sense on face value. The question I can't get away from is why do you care?

You want to know why people put $10 offers on a $11 firm post? Because those people end up taking the $10. It is nothing more than a negotiation. Those psots where they want a transfer, many end up just renting.

Why this frosts you so much is beyond me. :confused3

A little anger management might be in order. :furious:

DITO! :thumbsup2 Thank you for explaining.

We might be able to use a bit more of that around here but some message boards go too far and make people not even want to post. Plus, it's kinda' fun to snicker when someone asks a question that's just been answered five threads down.

First line in the parentheses..."Gotta vent a little (in a good natured way), just for the halibut..."

I'm the furthest thing from angry, I really don't care. I just find it amazing that with the plethora of information here that it goes unread or ignored in favor of an obvious question. Figured I'd strike up a discussion on it...

As for the negotiation/transfer point you made...I wasn't questioning how things happen in rentals (I'm well aware of negotiations and that people looking to transfer do rent), just saying that the FIRST post goes against the rules the thread starter put in place. Kind of like me stating "good natured kind of way" up front then being referred to get anger management...people don't READ first... ;)

I agree that it is preferable to do a little research before blasting a question out on the Internet ("Today's Tuesday - does anyone know if that means tomorrow will be Wednesday?" ;) )

However, the search mechanisms for forums such as these aren't the most sophisticated, nor are they arranged in such a manner that traversing archives is easy. For example, we'll staying at the BCV for the first time (we'll be there in 24 hours woo-hoo!) and I realized that I knew very little about the IG / BCV / BWV / MGM boat system. I did do a search, but I got back, oh, 278 posts! Plus, would that be a Theme Parks question (EPCOT & MGM), a Transportation Forum question (WDW boats) or a DVC question (staying at and travelling to/from a DVC Resort)?

The key thing to remember, Kick Save, is that these are "Discussion Forums", and information is requested and shared via threads - a really poor way to store information if the goal is efficient retrieval (not slamming DIS, honest - that's not what the DISboards are for).

I do wish we could have a few more Sticky FAQs, like the Resorts board does for each resort, but then again, I'm with rinky - if we make things too efficient, who will we have to mock? :confused3

Be well!

I'm with you...hence starting this discussion. ;)

The amount of info here is insane. Page one on the Theme Parks board lasts all of an hour or two before its buried, multiple threads of the exact same subject are unavoidable. In some of the slower forums, here for example, it's a bit easier to see recent stuff, but even at that something discussed three weeks ago is buried now. I get that...probably contribute to it. ;)

But, after seeing some of the stuff I pointed out in the first post, I just had to laugh...and spawn this thread. Couldn't resist. I guess "Share in my mocking," would have been a better title choice than "have to vent," because venting implies anger or frustration, and I'm neither. Basically, getting a good chuckle and sharing. :teeth:

Kick Save, I love your post. It says things that I have wondered as well. Lots of times, I'll respond to those simple, "how many time have we seen them" if someone only has one or two posts. But even some of us long time vets have a question that we don't even know, like the one that Dean posted on the DL board a while back. I know I responded to some of those threads because when I looked via a Search, I still didn't find what I needed.

But those post like you have in your original post are the ones that get me, too.

I'm taking your post in good fun. :thumbsup2

Anyone can request or make an offer to buy points at any price they want but I was shocked when someone sent an email asking if I would rent my points during the Christmas season for under $5 per point. A DVC member saves the renter 20 - 50% off their reservation and they still want more of a bargain. I wonder if they ever found anyone? They have every right to make an offer so do not get me wrong. PS This email came from a person that was in a very high paying profession. I did have in my post the amount that I was renting for which was a lot higher.

Hey, what time does MS open?

How busy do you think it will be Easter week?

Rink and Dr. T - be gentle in your mocking ;)

My personal favorite is: (on a Wednesday evening)

MS is closed. What do you think my chances of booking at *** resort at **** time of year?

ARGH. Call in the morning for pity sake.
What I want to know is, why do I open up threads like that???? :rotfl2:

I had to take the Rent/Trade board off my favorites because the stuff I read and answered got me into trouble. ;)

So, Kick Save, I feel your pain...... I think I need a break! :confused3

I get your post ,but this post starts a whole new one on why some people have to make something out of every post here. You got everything from anger mangaement to answers on negotiating..lol..I guess were all so smart and perfect we have to set everyone else straight. This is just about a mouse and supposed to be fun..have some fun..i enjoyed your post "just for the halibut"

I took your post all in good fun, especially since you pointed that out in your first sentence or two. Reminds me of thread started last week in the Dining section where someone--in jest and in the spirit of laughing at our own foibles--mentioned that Ohana was not an Irish pub. Some of the ensuing posts re: spelling, wrong word choices, and colloquial usage were hilarious, and none seemed to be mean-spirited or brutish. Naturally, there were a few who took offense. And that's okay, too. But for me, I prefer to find the humor in everyday situations and human traits since I have more than my fair share of doing/saying lunkheaded things. Enjoyed your post!
