I came back to apologize, plain and simple. No matter how I feel or what is happening in my life, I have no right to insult others. Sorry.

Just the mere act of coming back here to apologize says a lot about you. Don't worry about it. Everybody loses it sometimes.

In the spirit of this thread, I would like to offer my apologies to hambirg for the dead, black roses that are on their way to your house. It was the only way I knew of to express the dark empty feeling you have left inside of me. Please accept my apologies for the accompanying card. I won't go into details on its content. This is a family board. I won't stalk you any more. But, if you ever change your mind about us, I'll be waiting for you, right under your bed... always.

I get the feeling you are a lot stronger than you give yourself credit for. Props to you . Not many can do what you do. As for the post, eh, we all have bad days!

Don't let others get you down, we just aint that important! ;)

No hurt feelings here. Just lots of lobbying in my state to get insurance to actually pay for therapies. Our policy, through Cigna, denies coverage to children who are "developmentally delayed". For example, if you were born with cerebral palsy, guess what, you get no coverage for physical or occupational therapy. As much as I hate Cigna, to be fair, most major medical denies therapy to developmentally delayed children.

If great aunt Ida has a stroke, guess what, her occupational and physical therapy is covered. If your child is born with a disability, the odds are greatly against him/her receiving therapy reimbursed by insurance. Thank goodness more states are recognizing this disconnect and passing insurance mandates. If a young child receives therapy, it can greatly affect his/her outcome as an adult to become a functioning, contributing member of society.

I don't think public education was meant to make up for people's crappy insurance, so I hope it's being addressed legislatively. For now, that should be the responsibility of the individual, not the school. My kid's school doesn't pay for his asthma meds or his nebulizer, which isn't covered by many insurance carriers.

Many therapies will help individuals but not society. While help for holding a pencil might be included at school, therapy for walking and going to the bathroom is beyond the mandate of public education, as is tube feeding and suctioning someone. I know it needs to be done and done in a school setting, but that should be paid for by medical insurance.

This is the single most impressive statement that I have read on this board. to you.

Glad I read this post.

Um, no... neurotypical is not a "new one" to the autism community. It refers to people who are "neurologically typical," or those whose neurological development falls into the "typical" range, rather than on the autism spectrum. Who is to say that autistic people are not "normal?" Their neurological development is not necessarily "typical" when looking at the population as a whole, but it doesn't mean autistic people are not "normal."

Typical and normal are synonyms. So, if you are saying something/someone is not typical then you are saying that they are not normal. If it makes people feel better, have at it, but you are playing with word definitions to suit your (general your) desires.

That was basically what I was about to type but crashbb said it pretty succinctly. If you aren't typical you aren't normal. It is just two ways to say the same thing. I know a lot of people put too much weight on the connotation of the word normal as opposed to the denotation of the word but it doesn't change the definition. The smartest person on the planet and the dumbest are both equally abnormal, just in different directions.

No need to apologize to me.. If you read my initial post, I think you're a pretty wonderful person.. :lovestruc

that's pretty amazing. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug:

i hope you have a wonderful day tomorrow. i haven't walked in your shoes, but i'm sure it's a heartbreaking, difficult walk.

Because it is full of the most judgmental, entitled people ever. Just reading it I have learned that my kids:
are not entitled to go to school with "normal kids" because they will drag them down.
Should wait in bus lines like everyone else and if there are people who are sitting where wheelchairs go then too bad, they should just wait for the next bus (or the one after that)
Get front of the line acess all of the time (too bad no one told us)

I have learned that I:
Use a wheelchair as a battering ram to get where I want to go
Run over people all of the time while they are innocently just walking
Feel entitled to get extras
Should use politically correct terms which change on a daily basis
Shouldn't mind that people find it humorous to joke about disabilities

My kids' crimes are that 6yo DDs birth mom chose to drink and use drugs the whole bloody pregnancy and 5yo DSs parents beat the snot out of him at 2 months of age.

I fully expect to be flamed, shut down (maybe even see the thread zapped) and possibly banned but some of you are self-centered children who won't think beyond your own little world.

Well you do have to have a pretty thick skin on the Dis and in raising a special needs kid.

Hope you have a better day tomorrow

Abby Lee, is that you? From your siggie and area, I'm thinkin' it might be.

OP-- I'm sorry. I do think our schools are spending too much money providing medical care and therapy instead of educating. I don't think that's what public education was intended to do. Medical issues should be paid with insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid, and therapy should take place at a doctor's office.

School has also become a federal food program-- breakfast, lunch, an afterschool snack, and a backpack for the weekend, and I don't think that was the intent of public education either. So, sue me.

I'm not trying to hurt your feelings, but our opinions just differ.

So when insurance wont cover therapies and parents cant afford it what should happen to this kids? Why should the kids suffer because insurance deosn't care about them. Insurance sucks. Plain and simple. It's a fact in America that insurance doesn't cover a lot of what it should. That's not going to change until insurance companies are forced to change it and are forced to stop lining their pockets and do more for their consumers. And we've all seen what happens when we try to change insurance and force the companies to spend more...

Disabled children are supposed to get services provided to them to allow them the most mainstream education possible. For many children that involves OT, PT, speech, etc. It allows them to be in a school environment.

I just.....NVM...it's not worth points and I can't be nice about it so NVM.

They are not synonyms in the scientific communities. Autism falls under that area. So, no typical and normal are not synonyms.

I work with ADHD and autism researchers (among others) within the scientific community and they use normal. We use the term normal when referring to those without the condition under discussion.

In general conversation, I will not refer to myself as "neurotypical" (well, I have dysgraphia, so I guess I cannot do so anyway). Feel free to refer to yourself however you would like. Funny how it is okay to "label" those without autism or other issues, but not okay to "label" those with the conditions.
