Goofy Support Group (AKA Goofy Challenge 2010)

Charles thanks for adding the CONFIRMED only 1 need on the final instructions. I have them printed but planned on reading them this weekend. I have seen a bit of conflicting info even in emailing. I had asked if they knew where the reserved ChEAR sections would be on the course in trying to decide if Mom wanted it or not. The reply I received was there was NO reserved areas on the course. And I have seen conflicting info in the chats, the same chats.

So Thanks! for confirming. I thought they both should be in the same envelope but then thought maybe due to insurance reasons they needed 1 for each race. Dunno.

I'll work on winking, smiling and batty lashes for spare bag ;) Unless I locate my older (disney marathon weekend) bags. I have a few I never used so should be good to go :) Plus I need a bag for immediately crossing the finish. A place to stash my handheld and then the bottle of water they give so I don't have to pretend to be a juggler

Kirsty YAY!!! On doing the 3 in the freezing temps! "back to FL" where you belong? TAKE ME WITH YOU!!! *insert shivering smiley here* LOL Loved that 'where I belong' line LOL

Diane- the funny thing is I am originally from England, I should be able to withstand freezing temps, but 2 years in FL have made me soft around the edges, so I guess I am just going to have to live there forever now, shucks!

Here in Houston it's know as your blood thinning after a couple winters.

Dang I hate cold.

I have nothing to add, but that I hear ya, Charles and Kirsty. I grew up in Calgary and so am a veteran of many a -40 degree day. However, I've been in Seattle for two years now and now when the temp goes below 40 I don't even know how to function! Granted, here in Seattle we also don't know how to function when the temperature goes above 70, but that's another story... :rotfl:

I got in 4 miles yesterday, and am going to do another 4 tomorrow. Possibly on the dreadmill, as it's supposed to rain all day here tomorrow. Yuck. At least it's nice to know that getting my miles on the treadmill is an option... 4 miles is about my limit on the treadmill before I go insane. We also have family (DH's cousin and his GF) visiting over New Years, so I better get in my run before the hyjinks start...

Happy New Year! :cheer2:

Sorry to hear that your challenges continue, Kristy. Please take care of your health first, and worry about Goofy second.

I am finally back from NY. We had to extend our visit by a couple days since my MIL ended up in the hospital. I tried to keep on track with strength/core training, but only did my 8 miler on Sunday, and 5 miles on a TM on Saturday. We did get home in time for me to get on my treadmill last night, so I think things will go fine for Goofy. I do have to get back to a better diet, however. Only gained one pound for the holidays, but... I have not been doing great nutritionally.

We are having a party here tonight, so I have to get food and etc to get ready for that. Hopefully I will come up with some good choices for all of us.

Charles- I am right there with you! I hate cold, I think my blood must be so thin by now it's a miricle it stays in my body! I used to spend everyday of the year outside in England with the horses now it drops below 75 and I am shivering!

I don't have anything else to add today but I am surviving the madness by coming on the boards every 5 seconds :rotfl2: my family are so fed up of me talking about, my toenails, the weather, shorts, shoes, insoles, etc I see them get this look on there face everytime I start to mention running, boy will they be happy when it's all over!

So I was wondering what everybody drank as there recovery drink after the 1/2 I have yet to find anything I like, I am allergic to chocolate and try to avoid as much dairy as possible when I run, so that just kinda eliminates most of the options, do you know what else I could have straight after the 1/2 to help me recover?

Thanks, only 9 days to go now!!! Eeeeeeeee! :scared1:

I usually go with plain old water and some Powerade after a race or long run. What I eat right after a run makes more of a difference than what I drink. If I don't have a bagel, breakfast taco or gordita (gotta love the taquerias in Houston, or something else with starch and protein within half an hour, I stay tired a lot longer.

My money has cleared and my order is in.:woohoo:

Kirsty Have you tried the Silk Milk smoothies??
I know they do a very nice strewberry one, look in Publix chiller isle.

I always have a coke and a silk chocolate milk when I fininsh.....but there again I drink silk every day!!!!

I was able to get in 3 miles this morning since I have the day off (yeah another 4 day weekend.) The run this morning was at marathon pace so its all good. I also booked another night before the marathon - so now me and my DH will be there Thursday evening - in time to get to the expo on Thursday and get it taken care of so I am free to do whatever on Friday instead of traveling 3 hours and then going to the expo and the Wish meet - now I can relax and take my time prior to the half.

Kirstie - take care of that headache and your arm. Glad to hear your DH was able to get the wheels on the rims. I am thinking of you!!

Kirsty-Leigh - I know I am no help but my recovery drink of choice after the marathon is a nice cold Coke - which they have at the end of the marathon by the way!!

Can't believe next week at this time I will be almost done with work and getting ready to head to Pop. I can't believe I am already "checked-in" to my resorts - I can't believe Goofy is almost here. OMG

Hey guys, I just booked my puppy into the kennels at epcot, thatway I can go see her after my races, we also saved $100 compared to whatwe spend atour regular kennels! Now I am extra excited, it's going to be a whole family vacation :)

syko- I might try the silk strawberry, I have rice milk at home but it doesn't do anything for me after a run, but silk that might be a plan!

I am going to check us into our hotel today! I don't know how I am going to stand the excitement for another 9 days!

Kirsty

Hi All,
4 miles yesterday at 10K pace then 10 today at marathon pace. Nothing longer than 4 miles from here on out! I waited too long today because 1) I didn't want to run in the cold (Florida style) and 2) I stayed up late last night. It was a little hot today I must say. Sweating from step 1. Should have gone out earlier. I took this last run to simulate what I'd be taking for the races.

I too hate the cold too. When I did the LV race earlier this month the cold really hurt my lungs. I coughed all day long afterward. But I have the throwaway clothes I need no mater what the weather is at Disney. Everything from a throw away poncho ($1) to throw away running suit.

getting closer......

Hi everyone! :yay:

I can't believe I'll be leaving for WDW in just a few short days. :scared1:

I'm really getting a bit NERVOUS about completing the Goofy. I have had a terrible chest cold ever since I got back from the Dallas White Rock Half a few weeks ago. I'm on my second round of antibiotics. Ugh! I tried to complete the 20-miler this past weekend but due to some awful metatarsal pain in my left foot (and some blistering issues), I had to give it up after 16 miles. Luckily, my cold didn't seem to bother me.

I went to the podiatrist this morning and he put a pad on the liner of my left shoe to try to help the metatarsal problem (pain in the ball of my foot and toes). I was hoping he could give me a steroid shot but he didn't want to. I don't know if that's a good thing or not. :confused3 He wants me to take some prescription strength Naproxin. I'm not sure why since my foot doesn't hurt until I walk/run on it a while (after 5 miles). I also told him that I couldn't take the drug during the races (half and full). So, I'm not really sure how it's going to help me. Anyone else ever have this kind of problem?

Sorry to sound so down. I'm really hoping for the best and trying to be optimistic.

Kristy - :wizard: coming your way. You've really had a challenging year.

Got in my second 4 miler of the week today and last run of the year. Looking for 8 tomorrow and then a couple 4 milers Sunday and Tuesday. We'll see. Been relogated to the treadmill my on most of my runs as it's been icy out there. I can't wait to get to Florida and get after Goofy #2.

Hurrah! It's the last day of the year, and I got in my 4 miles (on the treadmill) and I'm all checked in at CSR for Wednesday! I listened to a playlist of Disney music on the treadmill, and it really got me into the pixie dust spirit of things!

Thanks for the reminder, Kirsty-Leigh! I had to call my dogs' kennel today to make their "drop off appointment" and had totally spaced on it! Jack and Sasha the German Shepherds are going to their favorite dog ranch next week; a big farm with fenced enclosures and cows and horses to bark at, and nothing to do all day but run around with their new friends! I'm always surprised that they're willing to get in the car when we pick them up after their stays there!

I still have packing to do, and I have to clean the house and shower before DH's cousin shows up this afternoon, but it's been a good day. My morning sickness has also subsided a lot this week, so I'm feeling pretty good in general. I'll be running slowly, but I'm so excited to finish the Goofy with little Pudge (as in, "Pudge controls the weather!" from Lilo and Stitch. Don't ask. It's a long story.) in tow!

I'm going to do 8.5 miles on Sunday, and then another 4 on Tuesday, and then I'm on the plane Wednesday morning. Not too much longer, now!

Susie - From my limited experience, I think the podiatrist was probably right in refusing the steroid shot. They usually recommend that you not run for a couple of weeks to prevent doing any damage once you've had the shot, and you're too close to the race now. At least that's what my podiatrist would say, and what the orthopedist who talked to our group earlier this season told us. And I know all the warnings about not taking anything other than Tylenol during the race, but both my regular physician AND the orthopedist both advocate taking Advil and/or Aleve if you need it. I would think if he prescribes Naproxin knowing what you're facing, he must believe it's safe, and I'd feel okay taking it. But I tend to be over lenient with meds, so I may not be the best advisor! I just know what it feels like to be frustrated with the pain and trying to deal with it. At this point, I'd do whatever it takes to get through the 39.3. Good that the cold seems to be under control, though!

Suzi,

Jackie is essentially correct especially in the foot and ankle you really need to wait a week before running. The other issue may have come from a previous injection. If you have had another steriod shot in the last 3 months then you should not have another.

Since I am not your doctor I cannot comment on your Naproxin script. I would follow the script through Firday. Then I would still urge a little caution as doctors sometimes write scripts on autopilot. Read the Race Booklet about NSAIDs for a little more up to date general guidance on the use of NSAIDs around a race. The professional guidance has been modified some such that following you script up to Midnight Friday then Saturday post race once you can drink and urinate normally again through midnight may not be contrindicated. If you do take the naproxin near the races just understand what the symptoms of hyponatremia are.

Extra Strength Tylenol is always there and will provide some pain relief over the weekend.

Good Luck with the race.

Jackie and Charles -

Thanks so much for your input. What you said makes sense. I have never had a steroid shot before; it was suggested by a few other runners over the Christmas weekend. In fact, one of them, a trainer, said now would be the time to get one as they are only good for a couple of weeks. That's why I asked my doctor about it.

The podiatrist did say that if my foot was not better by Monday, he would give me the shot. However, my foot doesn't hurt unless I put a lot of miles in and I wasn't planning on doing that this weekend...and I told him that.

Sounds like I just need to do what you said, Charles. Take the Naproxin up to Friday night and rely on Tylenol through the races. Another friend of mine, who is in pharmaceutical research and a runner, told me last night - "NO, NO, NO" on the steroid shot this close to the game. I think I'll listen to ya'll. :thumbsup2

I've read other blogs and it looks like the shirts they give us are long sleeve technical shirts. Do we get 1, 2, or 3 shirts? I guess I should have read the registration part closer. I would expect at least two since we pay a lot for Goofy, but getting a 3rd Goofy shirt would be absolutly fantastic. I don't wear the race shirts during the run (I think of them as finisher shirts), but I might if it was Goofy shirt (and short sleeve otherwise it may be too warm).

I also read a recommendation to bring a beach towel so you have something to sit and stretch on while waiting to go to the corals. It that a good tip?

On the training front, did a 6 on Wed. It was 21 degrees with the wind chill. I had a long sleeve shirt, but forgot my vest. Instead I used a short sleeve running shirt over my long sleeve and it worked out well. The worst part was I forgot a knit cap and only had a baseball-style running cap so my ears took the worst of it. I survived and it think the cold made me run faster so I could get back inside quicker.

Anyway, just starting to gather all the stuff to bring to WDW. Other than the running stuff (my greatest fear is that I forget my shoes) and medication, I figure I could buy anything I forgot.

Nos

You do get 3 shirts. They started that a few years ago as first couple of Goofy's you just got 2 shirts(Half & Full). Now you get a cool Goofy shirt as well :thumbsup2

HOPEFULLY the artwork will change. PLEASE MICKEY AND GOOFY, I can't tell from one year to the next what shirt I pull out.
