Goofy Support Group (AKA Goofy Challenge 2010)

Just got an email from Delta that my itinerary has changed. My flight to Orlando is 2 hours earlier!! :cool1: I just may get to the Expo and Epcot on Thursday.:cool1:

Ok so I got on the TM last night and managed to do 10 miles - not quite what I was hoping for (and alot slower then I was hoping for as well.) I did do 2 miles yesterday morning as well - so that makes it a total of 12 miles but I know its not the same as 12 miles at one time. For some reason yesterday my left foot started hurting out of nowhere (well I did break it 8 years ago so its always been a problem for me) then as I was on the TM the back of my leg was hurting again (I stretched it out enough now after) then the blister on my toe was bothering me - I had moleskin on it but it didn't help. I need to figure something out - I think its the insert in my shoe - it doesn't quite go all the way to the tip of the shoe - not sure if that is it or not but I need my insert so I might have to go to the running store and let them figure it out. Might just have to buy a new insert a tad bigger.

Its not helping to realize how few days we have left. This morning I woke up with both my achilies aching and that is only after 12 miles - hopefully in 50 whatever days I am better conditioned. I had high hopes for this Goofy but I knew my main goal is to start and finish both races - guess I am going to have to throw any time goal away.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Tuesday. I most likely will get on the TM tonight during Biggest Loser - probably not for anything hard but I want to work the legs out a bit. I probably won't get anything done tomorrow since its my 9th anniversary. Thursday I might be able to squeeze in 2 miler if I can get up early. Anything after that I am in packing mode since we are leaving Friday morning. Hope to "virtually" be really doing some miles tonight while Biggest Loser is on tonight.

Michelle - Believe me, after 20 everything is numb. :rotfl: That's how I finished Richmond last weekend. I swear I hit an 8 mile wall that lasted from miles 12 through 20, then things slowly improved through the finish. Numb is the only explanation. I'm counting on being numb for all 26 of the full on Sunday in January.

Tricia - I've got to figure out the blister thing too. Haven't had any problems all season, then suddenly they're appearing everywhere. When I finished Saturday I found at least three. I wore a relatively new pair of shoes (same exact model I've been wearing all season), so I think they're not tied as tightly as the ones I've trained in all summer.

Pat - Come on up to Randleman on the 13th and do Victory Junction again for a B2B!

Christine - Good news about the flight change. We're going to be able to go the Expo on Thursday for the first time this year, and will actually be able to go first thing in the morning when it opens. I'm pretty excited!

Woke up this morning with a whole new commitment to Goofy training. Saturday really scared me. Even though I ended the race happy, those middle miles were tough. I truly intended to drop out of Goofy when I got home, but now I have the post-race high and intend to give it all I can between now and January. Took the dog out for a run last night (first time she's run with me since we got her in December!), then got up and did weights and core workout before work (first time I've done that ALL YEAR) I'm going to have every advantage possible, since the legs alone don't want to do 39.3.

Jackie

I've got a new ache--on the outside of my leg below my knee. I've never dealt with it before so have no idea what it is or what is causing it.

I'm not training for Goofy, but I like to read this thread for inspiration!

That sounds like it could be your peroneal tendon or muscle. It could also be a knot in your calf that is "pulling" on your peroneal. I had major problems with my left peroneal two years ago. I got it under control by stretching, icing, and self-massage. The massage seemed to help the most. I used the stick and a tennis ball and found the tennis ball more painful, and thus, more effective.

Check your shoes/inserts. I believe that my problem was caused because I was wearing shoes to correct my severe over-pronation that actually overcorrected causing me to supinate.

Becky My Dh is working on it as I type!!!:rolleyes1

We only had time for a quick crank around town tonight and I was doing really well, I was pulling at 18mph constant.....now if only I could do that in a race.:rotfl:

With no disk break working I had to start slowing down a lot quicker than normal, and I over shot a few stop signs.

As it was getting dark we decided to come back on the paths and as I was comming around a corner at 10mph I fell off.:scared1:
My DH jumped of his bike to pick me back up, as I on my side in my chair and I told him the dampner was not working, he had a look and the side one is fine, but the other one underneth my seat had come completely lose.

He has just tighten it up and its still not working:sad2: I think he will be calling the makers tomorrow if he can't come up with any other ideas????

I can't beleive how much maintanence this thing needs.:sad2:

You the old saying: it never rains it pours??

Well I think i'm in a monsoon.

My Dh called the company, luckly they where still there and said that my side dampener (the only I thought had the problem) has lost its hydraulic fluid.

I't can't be repaired and a new one is $300.:scared1:
It's not covered by my sponsorship either.:sad1:

It has to be custom made and it won't be quick, he said to call tomorrow and he will try to have a time line for us.

He has a demo chair in the shop and if he can't get one in time for my races he will take the one of the tester and send that to me to race on.
Until then I will have to use my trainer.:scared:

The problem is that these parts could last a day or for years!!!! and once it goes you can't use the chair until it replaced.:sad2:

Hey Guys,

Long time no chat :rolleyes1 Sorry I have been MIA, those of you that saw me at ToT know that I flew to England the day after the race (let me tell you nearly 10 hours on a plane after an 8 mile race, wasn't the best plan in the world!:headache:) Anyway so I was vacationing in England and I have been back a week and have only just got around to posting, I have been checking in on you guys though and it sounds like you are all doing awesome! Not long to go now :scared1:

While I was in the UK I managed my first week of full training with no problems, I even got in a 5/10 b2b. But then on the second week the hills, cold and camber of the road started to upset my sensitive shin and I had to abandon my 12m lr, anyway to cut a long story short I took a week off and re arranged my training plan and I am pretty much back on track, my shin is giving me some trouble but not much more than usual, I have a 1/2 marathon this weekend instead of my 14 miler and I am hoping to PR :cool1:

I also booked my room at the all star movies for marathon weekend, that kinda makes it more real :worship: but I am very excited because I thought I was coming alone but my family surprised me by saying they wanted to come too (as long as they didnt have to get up at 3AM with me :confused3) Now I have another reason to make it to the finish line alive :cool1:

Keep up the good work everyone and see you all in less than 6 weeks! :scared1::scared1::scared1:

Kirsty

PS Syko, I really hope you can get your chair sorted out that sounds so frustrating. I am praying you can get it all fixed in time and with not too many $$$ disappearing :grouphug:

Thanks Kirsty  and good luck in St.Petes.

I have some good news:cheer2:

As I run with the dampener on 5 / 8 and I do not ever turn it down, I can save time and $$ by having one direct from the factory and not have to wait for a custom one.:cool1:

I will still be able to change the setting, but not as I roll, like I can now, but for $100 saving and I will be able to have it next week I don't care.:cheer2:

My Dh now knows has to turn it up, just incase I ever get to Boston, where you get to 60mph on the down hills.:scared1:

Wow, I think you need a pit crew for the chair. Sounds like it is such a tempermental thing for the beating it must take on the course. HOpe you get a fix somehow.

Kirsty, glad you've got family to come support you for the event. How exciting!

dslvr, thanks for your input. I am wondering about the shoes. I've got new, but one of the 2 I bought is a new style for me. I'm heading to the running store to talk with them about it. Seems like it is easing a bit, but I've got major miles this weekend. I've a neutral foot and shoes are neutral with inserts. Still going to check, but the new style shoes are not the ones I will use for this LR. I'll be using my new Mizunos.

Kim, I think it looks like I'll be stepping 16 miles on Saturday as long as it is not raining.

Well, helllloooooo, Goofy people!!

I completed the Huntsville (AL) Half last weekend. What a riot! This was NOT a race for walkers. I was the poster child for our DLF>DNF>>DNS!! Even though the finish line was kept open for 3 1/2 hours, 90% of the 900+ people finished in under 3 hours. I had a 15 minute average pace, so I'm pleased with that. When we returned to the hotel, I got on the TM to make it 14 miles done. ;)

Syko, I'm glad to hear some GOOD news about your chair! I know you will be thrilled and relieved when things are working correctly!!

I'm still plugging away, and I see you are, too!! FANTASTIC!! :goodvibes Anne

Good job Anne,

sorry just quick check in to say hi!!!!

7 weeks till the beginning of the dopey!!!!!

Hey Kim, I didn't think you were doing Dopey. I'd like at least one morning to sleep in. ;)

I'm with Liz! Sleep in on Friday! LOL I would love to be at the 5K but I think for me to be as rested and ready to take on the weekend miles I will be snoozing along with after the Half. :thumbsup2

However for you Dopeys I could roll over ring a cow bell which will in turn scare the daylights out of Mom LOL then wave my green pom-pom :cheer2: then fall back asleep LOL

Syko YAY on finding a cheaper solutions but wow what stress you've had this past week with the parts. I hope the new part arrives soon and your moving along smoothly once again. 60 miles down hill :scared1: YIKES! But I hope you get to do those hills if not in 2010 then 2011:cheer2:

Kirsty-Leigh ... Welcome home! Great job on the training and Good Luck on your coming race!

Lily ... How did the talk with the running store people go? Good luck with your miles this weekend. Hope you get the leg figured out.

Anne!!! Congrats on the Huntsville race then going extra for the 14! :woohoo:

KIM
.... I saw your post to Dave's rambling (LOL on the rambling) about how your training is going! Keep up the great work! Just thought I'd toss that out as you zip by LOL

My training this week was not so good for the gym. I've been stressed with work and not fit for company after hours so skipped all 3 days. But I did drag my body to the park yesterday. Completed 14 miles. Which mentally once I get thru the 1st 6 gets a bit easier. The lake is 6 miles around. Mile 1 marker is now in my head as just up the road a bit. So 2 loops and just up the road a bit and YAY! Done! :) Not to bad even though my legs felt like cement early on and really didn't seem all the much better towards the end. I can't recall the 14 mile finish time but the 13.1 was 3:06:16. So I had an avg in the 14's.

I think overall I would have felt better had I ate a better meal the night before. I was home alone Wed night and tossed in a frozen pizza. Bad bad me. So before I go out again this weekend I will today be getting something better to fuel with for the night before.

Errands call. :) Keep up the good work everyone!!! Have a great weekend!

REI today had the GU brand 25% off. Sorry I don't know how long. I want to say my box of 6 (think that's how many are in there) cost $5.99. I ended up buying 3 boxes. :cool1:

Also there were some new products. Which I will have to post about later as the bag is in the other room. But they were bite size items. Powerbar had 1 and Clif is the other I bought i think that was cookie dough. But they were about the size of a big gumball I guess I would say. Saw another but it was more like a Clif bar broken into pieces and at the price they asked I bought 2 Clif bars that I will break myself LOL

I noticed Sport Beans now come in a resealable package. Though the package is bigger! For gummies I have been buying a Target brand. I figured if gummy bears used to be acceptable then Target in it's small packaging would be ok. I munch them more just to suck on something.

Gotta figure out what I am all carrying on Jan10th. Especially where on earth I am going to put that inhaler! *sigh* Can I use a rolling bag on the course? :lmao: I am kidding but barely. ;)

I get my stuff from http://www.supplementwarehouse.com
They will match any price you find online by 5%. :thumbsup2
For the Cliff stuff I use they have always matched a price and then been the cheapest.
I get 6 boxes of coke shots and 6 lemonade drink, every few months, once you have orderd they will send you a coupon to say more next time as well.
I'm starting to run low and will need to order soon.

Hey all...popping in on the disboards for a vist now and then looking for motivation to finish out my training program for my 5th Goofy. It's been a weird year to date including three bad bike wrecks (two new bike helmets as a result), learning how to rehab a hip and nurse a piriformis (also know in the orthopedic world as the filet mignon of the human body) back to health, building a house and getting a promotion that killed training for most the summer as well as my coaching gig.

You may know me on other boards as Coach Charles.

Ran a trial half in San Antonio. Great weekend for a trial race. Weather was hot and humid and my game was off thinking this would be a quick training run. Well after 4 miles I was looking to jump off course at mile 8 (where my hotel was) and call it a day. Thankfully I past a runner I coach and she was struggling (that thankful that she was struggling but that I found a friendly face). We chatted and I took off. I hit a tough mental stretch about a half mile shy of where I was going to leave the course. She tapped me on the shoulder and said she was running me past my hotel. We ran in a nice training pace for about 3 miles. Thankfully she came along and I was able to bank a few positives in the mid race that I will undoubtedly need in January

Well just sayin hey.

Just popping in on my vacation down in the Keys. Did a 5k this morning in Islamorada. It was good - I had a decent time (for me anyway) 33:44 was my time - no chip time but there was a clock - so I can't tell how true to time it was - I think it was pretty close to on time though. The course was one that started in one place and ended in another. So my DH and I drove to the where the race would finish. I picked up my packet and got my race number. The race was for runners and walkers - runners could walk but walkers couldn't run. They had a bus that would take the runners/walkers to the start line. My DH persuaded me to get on the 2nd bus which was around 7:20 am (race started at 8AM) Good thing I got on that bus because they were only going to have 3 bus trips and they ended up having to do 1 more - having only 1 bus didn't help - the last 2 bus loads were filled to the brim!! The course was mostly shady but it was humid already. The course was marked out for the high school cross country team so at least I knew approx how much longer. LOL I am glad its over. Now I can enjoy the rest of my weekend watching the NASCAR races in Homestead. So no more running this weekend for me - but when I get home I am going to have to do my long runs back to back - UGH

Hi All,
Sorry I don't comment on everyone's posts. Just not me :) Probably because I am too lazy.

Good to see Coach Charles over here.

I did 8 last night then 18 this morning. I was fine cruising right along actually thinking this was a pretty easy run. Then mile 14 I hit a wall. Don't know what happened. I was close to my car so I stopped and took some G2, changed shirt and towel because they were both soaked. Yes, the humidity is still here.

I finished but walked just a bit. I tell you I was ready to bag it at 17 miles as I swung by the car again but I have never cut a run short and I wasn't going to do it now. I figured I could walk if needed but I was going to finish 18. The pain today will be well worth it in mile 18 of the marathon.

I have 19 on Thursday since I am leaving for Vegas on Friday.

Hang in there everyone the end is near.

Duane
