Goofy Support Group (AKA Goofy Challenge 2010)

SUSIE!!!! Talk Mel into doing it!!!! I KNOW you can talk her into it :thumbsup2

come on Mel!!!! It'll be FUN!!!! :dance3:

I am trying to find people to talk me out of it. You are not helping.;)

Mel! Pick the year. Jen (unless I have my user names mixed up) the one you did the 2008 Marathon with is looking at 2011. 2010 or 2011? Which will it be? And you KNOW we not that kind of group. Of course we are going to feed this addiction!

Mel - I tried to talk you out of it and wait for me, but you won't LISTEN!!! I know I would take it really slow and just finish. Heck I hung in with your during the full, I can pull you along! Big Vic said he would do it with us also!!!

Hey Goofy's,

3 days and no posts? Time for a bump!!!!

That's cause we're all too busy training!! ;)

We had storms popping up so went to gym for weights/core/swim last night. Short soak in hot tub after felt good.

Fridays as always rest days. Tmrw is trail run (not sure how far I'll go yet) then Sunday is duathlon.

Next two events I have are bike events so won't be upping the walk/run distances until mid July going into RnR Chicago.

I've been working on modifying MfM for this. I've got a half end of Nov but need to figure out when to put in back to backs (only a couple) and the longer miles.

hey Goof's I have had to take the week off from training, I think I was trying to do too much and on Tue's run I had a tonne of shin pain. so I am giving my tired legs a break and getting my shoes looked at, maybe I need to cut out some of my runs, I was doing 5 a week but might need to do a few less :confused3 Gonna take it slow this weekend and see if I feel any better, i am a little worried about being in pain this early on :guilty:

Anyway good luck with your training and I will let you know when mine resumes :thumbsup2

Just Goofy...though what's another 3.1 when you're already doing 39.3? :joker:

I would like to look into an 'official' group thing for 2011. I've contacted WDW before, but they're not terribly responsive.

Kirsty-Leigh...how much mileage are you doing in a week?

Kim...I have the same concerns about Bingham's plan. Since I'm slow, my weekly mileage is not great. I'm combining Bingham and Higdon (novice training plan), using Higdon's SR mileage during the week and Bingham's LR progression on the weekends. I am going to try BTB on Fri/Sat, starting next weekend. I'm just going to add it in slowly, one mile at a time on Fri.

For those of you that have done this before, how do you eat/hydrate after the half? I crashed hard after the full in 2008 so want to make sure I go into it this time with a full tank. I'm concerned about being a bit dehydrated and low on fuel after the half on Sat.

I am just doing Higdens novice spring training plan, so the first week I did 9 miles, then 9.5 this week I should have done 10 but I took most of the week off, I wet for a walk today but am in a lot of pain right now, I was going out 5 times a week so maybe that is the problem :confused3 but it isn't improving with resting :headache:

I too would like to know what is best after the half, if I can ever get my legs to keep up with me I am also worried about crashing after the 1/2 and not enough energy for the full.

HAPPY TRAINING GOOFS :thumbsup2

this past January was my first Goofy, and I took it really easy during the half. I did a run for 3 minutes/walk for 2 for the whole race (except for the last mile that I jogged the whole way!). I also took lots of time to stop for pictures, stopping for almost all the characters in the Magic Kingdom! Anyhow, my goal for the half was to SAVE my legs and just go nice and easy.

After the half, I went back took a cold shower to cool off and we went out to the parks. We walked around AK all day, just taking it really easy. That night we had dinner and took it easy. I drank a lot of water that day.

For the marathon, I was fine, my legs felt great and I did far better than I ever expected, getting a PR by 16 minutes!!!!!

I guess what I am trying to say is if you are just looking to finish...take it super easy in the half to save yourself for the marathon.

Thanks to all you goofy vets, for sharing your experiences it is a tough one to try and figure out. Also since Goofy will also be my first full marathon...not sure what to expect.

I was going to try and do a marathon before Goofy but decided against it. Mostly for the fact that I am over weight and am trying to concentrate more on the weightloss right now while still getting in a 5K most nights and a few 10K's on the weekends until official training opens up for me which will be Aug 23. I only have a 15K race booked between now and January.

DH and I have planned to take almost the entire 3.5 hours to do the 1/2. Enjoy, take lots of photos and cheer everyone who passes us.

After we will head back to the resort, cool showers, maybe some pool time, eat, drink lots and lots of water. Probably just roam around Epcot or Boardwalk...if my BWV waitlist comes in....:rolleyes1 and head back for a early night. Worst thing for me is to stop walking competely I always feel worst after. Of course bed early since we have to be up at some ungodly hour Sunday. Marathon....again will take it slow since I have never done one, will just enjoy the experince.

Maybe we should all work on some neck exercises to hold up those 3 medals!!!!!!:cheer2::cheer2:

Hey guys,

I went and bought new shoes yesterday :cool1::cool1: I spend so many $$$$ on them it isn't even funny, but the lady said that I had worn my shoes down to nothing and my insoles were obliterated (in only 5 months!!!) the good new is that they were wearing evenly so I think the problem was that I was running with virtually no sole on my shoes, I don't have great foot anatomy anyway and I think this just made it worse! So I took today off and I am going to try the new shoes out tomorrow when training hopefully can resume :cool1:

I think neck exercise's are an excellent idea although even if I have a really strong neck the chances of my legs being able to take the weight of those three pretty things are minimal :rotfl2: I have visions of them putting it on my neck and my legs buckling from the weight :lmao:

Thanks for your advice all of you veterans its really appreciated here in the newbie corner

Kirsty

Hope everyone else is doing well :goodvibes

Updated to here all.

Mel - Will you be doing back to backs then? I think learning to hydrate the day of your first back to back is the best way to figure out what will work best for you after the half.

I personally just had a ton of water. We went to the Magic Kingdom and after a couple hours I looked at my wife and said it's time to go. It was way too crowded and I was not standing in lines. The rest of the day I spent at the pool talking to Duane and swimming with my oldest. Right after the half I ate a bunch of the food they gave us and then ate again once we got back to the room.

Every year has been different for me and this one coming up will be no different. First year was my first Marathon and my wife and youngest was there. This year was my first goofy and my wife and both kids were there. 2010 will be my second goofy and I know I will be undertrained and my wife and kids will NOT be there (Although my parents may come for the first time.)

Just practice, practice, practice what you will be doing that weekend. From eating, hydrating, what you will have during the Races, etc. You all may know this and much MORE, but just throwing some things out there.........

Hey Goofs!

Week 2 of Goofy training is in the books for me! Don't know why that's so exciting...haven't done much yet. But it's better to think of only 28 weeks left than 30!;)

If I could only get rid of the extreme heat! Did my 6 miler yesterday morning. Forecast was for 108! Started at 7am and it was already 80...by about 9:30 it was 90! Way too hot for that time of day! Will be so glad when this heat wave is over.

Hope your training is going well!:thumbsup2

As for hydrating, just to make sure everyone understands that "water" is not just water. You need to add electrolytes after the Half. You will have lost a lot during the race and if you only drink water, you will flush even more out and setup major issues for the marathon. You need to either drink some type of drink(Gatorade, Powerade, etc) or take supplements like Endruolytes(electrolyte pills). I take those during the races and 1 an hour most hours after the Half. You need fluids but not just "water".

Michelle: I agree that we need this heat gone. They are predicting 110 here again :scared1: and over 100 all week!

Thanks Robert. I always crave major sugar after I finish a race. Actually after the princess they had coke and 7up or sprite..can't remember which but I think I drank 2 of them right away, I know what isn't the best but it is what I craved....and I hate coke...lol. Not much of a gatorade fan but need to at least learn to tolerate it for the full for sure.

I know something I've done pretty much every race I've done is overdue it when it comes to taking in fluids. I've stopped at just about every single water stop and had both Gatorade/Powerade and Water. I know I should be sticking to what I practiced during training, but I have such a fear of not finishing I think I overhydrate. Luckily I've not completely overdone it, but this year I need to stick to the plan. I take Sports Beans in the amount I know I'm going to need and because of all the sport drinks I usually use 2 of the 6 or so. Again not good.

Anywho what Robert says is very important and great advice. As always! :thumbsup2

MEL! Slow? Weren't you flashing us your CORAL A bib in March?!?!? :cheer2: Congrats on sending in the registration! So glad your going to be along for the ride!!! :woohoo: Course this does cause an issue with Jen for 2011 or does that cause an issue for us? I'm committing to at least the Full in 2011 so Jen (if you see this) you'll have (slow) company!

Chris! Sorry I wasn't posting over the weekend. We had a major storm blow thru on Thursday and Ray and I were at the park. We were at 9 miles and thankfully near a shelter. We were stuck in the shelter for over a 1/2 hr :scared1: The storm was so bad it took out electricity all over the area, blew over huge old trees and here we are in the middle of the park watching the strikes of light flash around us. When it eased up we had to make a run for it as we were still 1.5 miles from the car! :scared: Thank goodness for a nice older gent who spotted us running in the rain. We were going to be in a nasty section (less coverage from the wind/rain) had he not gotten us. Nice to know there are people like that out there :cloud9:

So my weekend workouts were...

9.50 miles on Thurs (cut by the storm)
Fri & Sat lots of yard work as we waited for our power to be restored.
Sunday - 14.25 miles. :woohoo: (and I needed to hydrate!)

Wishing everyone injury free and excellent training days!!! And Happy 4th of July week!!!!
