Goodbye to Mission

I make my own. Both flour and corn (my fav. are so easy)...Just buy Masa flour by the regular flour and there's a recipe on the back of the package. I have a tortilla press, which makes it a little easier. There's also a sope recipe on the one I have now. I personally do not like or buy Mission tortillas, but we would get them at the tour just since they were fresh.

Mix 1/3 cup of oil into 3 cups of flour until thoroughly blended, giving you a crumbly texture.

Add 1 teaspoon of salt into 1 cup of warm water.

Add the salt water to the flour and mix with your hands until you can gather the dough in a ball. Put the dough in a bowl and cover with a clean towel. Let sit for about 30 minutes to 2 hours. Either use now or wrap in plastic, refrigerate and use within a day.

This recipe makes about 12. Divide dough into small balls and roll flat on a floured board. Or better yet, use a tortilla press. They're cheap and very handy. (At this stage you can also wrap in plastic and store in the fridge over night but you have to separate them all with plastic, so I don't.)

Cook on a griddle or a cast iron frying pan about 30 seconds on each side.

Someone else can help with corn- I really only do flour. :)

Thanks! I'm only interested in flour so this is perfect. Can't wait to try it sometime. I'll have to look for a tortilla press since that sounds like it would make it easier.

Our Costco sells uncooked tortillas that you can cook up yourself and they are pretty yummy. I'll have to try making my own from scratch sometime.

Yes, i get those a lot. They taste pretty good but aren't fluffy like the ones at Chevy's.

Maybe I'm desensitized from living in San Diego but come on guys its a Mission Tortilla... A mere conveyance or accompaniment to bigger and better food. Its like going to the Wonder Bread Factory and getting a free slice of freshly baked white bread. Bring on the chocolate!

We eat Mission tortillas often and like them, but the freshly made ones are BEYOND good. Flour, at least...we love the packaged corn tortillas, but I absolutely hated the corn tortillas fresh at the same place. :goodvibes

A good tortilla is delicious all on its own!

I'm pretty bummed. And quite a bit nervous about Haagen Dasz...sure, WDW's DTD can support both places, but can DLR support both? I just don't know.

I remember at the San Diego museum of man there was a tortilla lady working there making fresh tortillas. My daughters would make sure we went there everytme we went to Balboa Park.

I saw that! When his info is correct, it's a day behind! ;)

That makes me sad! Dont get me wrong, I love chocolate, especially ghiradelli. But we always enjoy the tour at the mission tortilla factory and that nice warm tortilla when its over!

Us too! We just came back from our 3rd trip to DLR and this was the first one where we went to the Mission Factory. We went several times throughout our visit. The kids (9 & 11) not only liked the fresh tortillas, but they also liked seeing the machinery working and reading about the history.

Yay! I love Ghirardeli soda fountains...used to go to the one in San Diego all the time when I lived there, and got to go to the original in SF a couple of years ago :hippie: . So happy that now there'll be one in California Adventure!

I liked the Mission Tortilla Factory and thought it was a great example of California history. But I also liked "Golden Dreams", am surely in the minority.

I guess the California history stuff wasn't appealing to anyone, so all the new changes have been to "character"-up the place. I'm not sure how Ghiradelli is an improvement over Mission, but whatever.:confused3

I told my son today, he was bummed. We haven't been to Disneyland since October 2009 (supposed to go for a one day blitz in March but he got nasty-sick at 2am that morning), we are missing it like crazy, and he said that he'd wanted to get a tortilla the FIRST thing we did (we usually go to DCA first day anyway). Dagnabit.

Caused a little discussion of companies and contracts and all of that, though, so that was cool.

Our Chevy's makes them fresh while you watch on a big machine. Also, I'm partial to La Tortilla Factory anyway. I know the owners and LOVE their tortillas. :thumbsup2

And yes, you can get chocolate anywhere, but GOOD chocolate is hard to find. :goodvibes Don't get me started on Russels or Palmers! :sad2:

I hear you on GOOD chocolate. I won't even buy that other stuff you mentioned.

Well, I can live without the tortillas but they better not get rid of the Boudin sourdough bread factory! The soup and salad in bread bowls are my favorite!!! Now I can hop over and get a piece of chocolate for dessert!:thumbsup2

We love Ghiardelli chocolate, and suspect it will make a lot more $$$ for DLR than the freebie tortillas.

Now that you mention it, I always thought it was a bit disappointing that you couldn't buy something made with tortillas. At least a quesadilla or something. It always made want something else.

For what it's worth, I was at California Adventure today and the Mission factory was closed up.

I'm okay with it closing, it never really interested us. If we want a tortilla we just go out for Mexican food! :) But now a chocolate tour, with chocolate sundaes? Ohhhh yes, that will draw us in. lol

Same here...the factory closing down doesn't affect us in the least. We're all about the rides but love the Mexican food while in San Diego. :flower3:
