Goodbye to Mission

Our friend Al Lutz posted on the "other" site today that the entire Mission factory will be extended and refurbished into a replica of the San Francisco factory, complete with brick facade and neon "Ghiradelli" sign. There will be factory tours, a chocolate shoppe, and a soda shoppe.
I just saw this after I posted! I know Al isn't always right, but I definitely more inclined to believe the rumor now. Sigh! But - his description did soften my heart a little bit more to the idea :rotfl:

Well, 2 trips to DCA and we never bothered going to Mission because we would rather spend time on rides. BUT, I'd totally head over for a Ghiradelli's sundae! We went to Ghiradelli's 2x in our 3 day trip to SF a few days back! And dh was in a conference all day for 2 of those days, or we might have gone more!

In southern California? Ummm pretty much anywhere.;)

Back to the topic, I wonder when the Ghirardelli's will be opened? We're going in July (I'm certain it won't be open then, but the wife and I are considering PAPs this year).

Not really. Born and lived here all my life. It's not like they are available, warm-hot off the presses, on every corner. ;) Yes, I love the ones at Chevy's-so good. Worth it to go there just for the tortillas.

The Mission Tortilla Factory was a unique thing to do at DCA. Don't get me wrong, I love chocolate, especially dark but it's sad to see the tortillas go.:sad2:

Any Chevys? Or the Mission district in SF.

I assume you are actually talking my post where I said our Chevy's makes fresh tortillas. Not all Chevy's do this. The one in Santa Rosa does. My boys took a school tour there years ago and they told us not every Chevy's has this machine and they were one of the few that did. Don't know where the others are.

I am not talking about your post, I was responding to the question about "where could we find this..." and FWIW I have never been in a Chevy's that didn't have "el machina." There might be some, but it's certainly not rare. They were misinformed or exaggerating.

Hmm... I haven't been in that many other Chevy's so I couldn't say. But the tour was 10 years ago, so maybe at the time that was true. :confused3

Since I live in San Diego I can run up to CA almost anytime. However I can also get fresh tortillas a lot of place in San Diego, and I can even make my own. Driving all the way to DL for tortillas is a bit much. However I've never been to San Francisco so I'm excited about a chocolate factory. I guess I could make my own chocolate but way more trouble than a tortilla....especially mission tortillas, the cheap brand of tortillas.

My house, actually. Come on up!!!!

and I can even make my own.

Okay, those of you who make your own tortillas, do you care to share the recipe? I love fresh (flour) tortillas!

I am a little sad that the tortillas are leaving since it was something different and it was a nice snack but I was always disappointed that every time we went it was always corn tortillas, never flour! And if they have to replace it with something, chocolate is certainly a good choice.

Yea I live in San Diego too and can say you also get fresh-made tortillas at On the Border... or ANY mexican cafe... Honestly DGF and I always thought that Mission place was a joke and didn't realize people actually went there... Maybe I'm desensitized from living in San Diego but come on guys its a Mission Tortilla... A mere conveyance or accompaniment to bigger and better food. Its like going to the Wonder Bread Factory and getting a free slice of freshly baked white bread. Bring on the chocolate!

I make my own. Both flour and corn (my fav. are so easy)...Just buy Masa flour by the regular flour and there's a recipe on the back of the package. I have a tortilla press, which makes it a little easier. There's also a sope recipe on the one I have now. I personally do not like or buy Mission tortillas, but we would get them at the tour just since they were fresh.

Well, I live in the frozen north, so the only kind of tortillas we get are NOT fresh. Sigh. But I do love Ghiradelli's chocolate! Their 60% dark is my very favorite. But I'm still a tiny bit sad there won't be any more tortillas.

Our Costco sells uncooked tortillas that you can cook up yourself and they are pretty yummy. I'll have to try making my own from scratch sometime.

Walmart has them too. I want to say the brand was Guererro? But it might have been Mission. Of course, they're pretty easy from scratch, too.

So it does sound like the soda fountain will be included!!!

Mix 1/3 cup of oil into 3 cups of flour until thoroughly blended, giving you a crumbly texture.

Add 1 teaspoon of salt into 1 cup of warm water.

Add the salt water to the flour and mix with your hands until you can gather the dough in a ball. Put the dough in a bowl and cover with a clean towel. Let sit for about 30 minutes to 2 hours. Either use now or wrap in plastic, refrigerate and use within a day.

This recipe makes about 12. Divide dough into small balls and roll flat on a floured board. Or better yet, use a tortilla press. They're cheap and very handy. (At this stage you can also wrap in plastic and store in the fridge over night but you have to separate them all with plastic, so I don't.)

Cook on a griddle or a cast iron frying pan about 30 seconds on each side.

Someone else can help with corn- I really only do flour. :)
