Buying resale saves lots of money, typically thousands of dollars.I know everyone on this board pushes resale, resale, resale. But we have found that sometimes buying direct makes a lot of sense.
With planning one can sometimes get more points resale than retail with a truly loaded contract. At one time the difference was generally 15-20% until a few years ago, this was a real question but when we're talking literally double and several thousands of dollars, most people are wealthy enough to throw away that type of dollars. Now it might mean they shouldn't buy rather than buy resale in some cases.Buying resale saves lots of money, typically thousands of dollars.
By most other measures, buying direct is better. (An exception was last year when direct sale wait lists formed for several resorts.)
For many, it comes down to how much you value your time vs. how much you value your money.
While your at it, make sure you ask for some diamonds, a new car, and an airplane too!A little late to the party, but we bought resale and can't imagine buying direct. That said, if the Grand Floridian was all I wanted, then I would have. I actually bought resale at HHI and BWV. Both contracts were loaded, and I rented the points to defray the cost of the initial investment.
Only six months later, after seeing the value of my BWV points skyrocket on the resale market and realizing we will never make a reservation at 11 months (and we always go in September/May), I sold my BWV points for a nice profit. I am planning on adding on within the next 6 months or so, but will probably choose to do so at SSR (for the lower maintenance fees). Sometimes I think about how easy it would be to buy direct, but I just can't justify it at current prices. Even so, if the stars align correctly (and I get my husband drunk), I might buy a small Poly contract when the time comes.
I should have my member number in a week or so. My offer was accepted Dec 20. So waiting 8 weeks I saved about $20,000. I value my time but I'm not planning a trip till late Sept- I value saving that kind of money.Buying resale saves lots of money, typically thousands of dollars.

Why not buy AKV first and see how it goes then you could add the GVF points much easier with a lot less issues of matching UY and finding the right resale. Good luck with your purchase. So after months of the iconic debate of resale vs. Direct DH and I FINALLY agreed on what we are going to do...
Drum roll please....

We are going to do both!
We were planning on buying 250 points GFV direct..
So in compromise we will be buying 150 GFV direct & 100 point AKV resale..![]()
The 150 will meet our needs for the 1st two years adding the 100 AKV point within the next 6-7mo..
This will allow us to do one trip on GF points and one trip on AK points a year (during the times we like to go)
The chances of us getting our oct UY is probably not going to happen.. Since we only want to spend $70-$74 a point, and only want a 100 point contract.
so we may have to live with two separate contracts.. And transfer points if needed
Thanks for all the advice..
Has anyone bought direct and not regretted it?
We're weighing resale vs. direct, and I just have a few questions. I apologize if this has been addressed, but I didn't see the information in this thread.
1 - We were told that buying resale means we wouldn't be entitled to theme park ticket discounts. Is this true? I didn't think this was the case, but it's possible the restrictions have changed. Also, is the discount available only on annual passes?
2 - It was also mentioned to us that the only points available (direct from Disney) to purchase are at VGF. Purchasing points at say, Wilderness Lodge or OKW wouldn't be an option unless we go with resale. Is this true?
3 - Are resale points able to be used at Aulani?
Thank you!

I'm not sure how wait list works.. Can you put yourself on, and they If they find one, can you pass on it?"Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb." Famous quote from Batman from the 1960s movie. That's how I felt last week. I decided to do a smallish add on at VGC, and having bought there both direct and resale, I was open to either. Looking at the resale prices creeping up to and past $140, and with the direct price at $158, I called my guide to get on wait list. Was I surprised when he basically refused to do it and told me to stick with resale, if I can find a contract I like. He read me the the points on my UY's wait list - over 1000, including one for 400 and another for 350. And those people are doing it smart - they have specified they will take the points in any increments. So, as my guide said, when these get to the top of the list, they will suck up a ton of ROFRs, bankruptcies, etc. He also said there are people on that list since the start of 2013. So I hung up w/o going on the list but with my guide's blessing to go resale which was his recommendation. Of course, there are not many VGC contracts for sale out there anyway, so this could be a long long process. Can't win going either way in my case.
I'm not sure how wait list works.. Can you put yourself on, and they If they find one, can you pass on it?
If so I would put yourself on anyways.. And if you find one on resale have yourself removed..
If there is no risk of ended up with two contracts..
