Good idea or gruesome?

When my husband dies, he wants to be cremated. Then he wants me to have his ashes sent away to be turned into diamonds for me and our daughters. At first I thought it was an awful idea, but then as I've thought about it, I like idea more and more.

For myself I'm going to have a pendant made, for the girls he wants rings made.

Hopefully, it's not something I'll have to worry about in the near future, but he's convinced it'll be soon.

Have you ever done this, or know someone who has? What do you think of the idea?

I don't think it's that bad. People keep loved one's ashes in urns in their houses. It's kind of nice in a sappy/sentimental way. Why is he convinced he is going to die soon? To me that's creepier that ash diamonds.

I don't think its gruesome.

And I don't think the OP is insinuating that her husband is dying, I read it as they were just having a discussion about what they wanted done with their remains after they die?

I think it is a different idea. When I last looked into it, it was terribly expensive, though.

I just googled it because I've never heard of it before. Apparently you can also make diamonds from locks of hair.

I just saw this on an episode of Law & Order! :lmao: A woman had her husband's cremated remains made into a "diamond" and she wore it on a ring. I had no idea it was a real thing.

I find it to be a little bit creepy but if it makes you and your husband happy, go for it. Who cares what other people think, right? :)

It is an interesting idea but probably not something that I would want to do.

My hubby and I are donating our bodies to science:cool1:

For some reason, I think its far less gruesome than keeping someone's ashes in a jar on the mantel. Didn't know it could be done though. Interesting...

How long does it takes one's ashes to become a diamond. I know the real Diamond process takes years... Would you even be alive when the process is done?

I just thought it was sad that you said your DH didn't feel he would be around much longer. I would concentrate more on keeping him here!:thumbsup2

The website that I read (lifegem) said that their process takes up to 9 months.

I find that to be really creepy and not something that I would want to do/wear.... but to each their own, if it makes others happy to wear something like that then so be it.

I think it is expensive.;) My take on it is "whatever". As long as you have the money for it, I don't see an issue.

I think that if it works for your family go for it but I don't think it is an option for me.

ETA_ I just googled this and while I would not want to do this with cremated remains I think I would have no problem with a stone created from a lock of hair.

DH and I always say that we want to be cremated. Several years ago I heard about life gems and I actually like the idea. DH says it's too expensive but hey he wont be around so... I mean what are you going to do with the ashes anyway. Currently I have my father's ashes in the spare bedroom closet. Little do most of my guests know they are "sleeping" with dad.

I don't think it's gruesome. I think it's kind of a cool way to always keep him with you so to speak.

I don't really think he's going to die that soon or necessarily before me. I could get in the car today and be killed. It's just that he's convinced that he's going to die soon (not deliberately!) and wants to make plans. He also does not want any viewing or service. That part I don't know if I'll be able to honor, providing I'm around for it.

Personally I think he's suffering from depression, but won't do anything about it. But that's another story.

According to him, we will have enough $ from life insurance to pay for it, so I'm not worried about that. The one company I did get info from, their prices start at 30K, so I'm going to look around some more.

Thanks for all your opinions. Glad I'm not the only one who likes the idea!

I think it would be creepy for me to to wear your husband on my finger. However, I don't think it would be be creepy for me to wear my own husband on my finger. Does that make sense?

When reading this, my first thought was "What happens if you lose it?" I think it would be far more devastating than losing an engagement ring. It absolutely cannot be replaced.

You're right, it would be creepy to wear YOUR husband on MY finger, but since it would be my husband on a pendant on a necklace (I don't want a ring), I don't think it would affect you! ;)

On the other hand, my daughters would have a true "Daddy's ring" to wear. Just imagine when someone admires their ring, they could say, "thanks, that's my Dad!" :rotfl2:

As far as losing it, it really wouldn't bother me except for the money lost. I realize how cold that sounds, but honestly, whether his remains are in a diamond, on my mantle, or lying in the ground, he's not there anyway. This goes into my spiritual beliefs, which isn't allowed here, so that's all I will say.

I don't know if I think it's creepy or not, but there's no way I would spend that kind of money on it. I really think it capitalizes on our fear of death.
