She adopted a little girl from Ethiopia  I'm a huge fan of international adoption (we're planning at least one in the next several years). Ethiopia has very friendly policies (VERY fast placement times, lower fees than other programs, children are treasured by their communities while they wait for adoption, higher age limit for prospective adoptive parents). I hope that this adoption brings the spotlight on this particular program, as I believe that it is often overlooked by prospective adoptive parents.

Whatever else you can say about Angelina Jolie, she seems to be a very devoted and loving mother. I say good for her for adopting her second!!

::yes::

i also think this is great
she is in a way leading by example and putting her money where her mouth is
adopting kids, giving money, giving her time to the UN and other nations

I think it is great for this baby girl. Jolie seems to be a great mom to Maddox.

I think it's great as well. I also wanted to wish you the best with your adoption. 5 years ago today DH and I stepped off a plane from China carrying our beautiful 10 month old DD. It's a moment I won't ever forget.

I thought it was great too when I heard the news this morning! The little girls also has AIDS which I commend Angelina Jolie for taking on. She certainly is setting a wonderful example to others. :goodvibes

The baby doesn't have AIDS. She is an AIDS orphan, which is VERY common in Ethiopia. I believe that all children are tested to make sure that they DON'T have AIDS before Ethiopia adopts them out.

I used to think she was kind of quirky, but she's one celebrity who really puts her overinflated Hollywood salary to good use all over the world. I wish her the best of luck with her baby girl - i'm sure her son will love having a little sister around to play with.

Thanks! We aren't 100% sure which country we'll adopt from, but we'd consider China if they'd consider us. I think that they have higher a minimum parental age than other countries, though. I also like that Ethiopia has such a high maximum parental age. I could easily see adopting in our mid-40's :flower:

Sorry. I watched it on the news this morning, while reading on the DIS, ;) and I thought they said the baby had AIDS.

Fantastic! This is one of the many reasons I like Angelina Jolie.

chrissyk - to adopt from China both parents need to be at least 30 and married 3 years.

korea - minimum age is 25 but you have to be married 3 years.

Good Luck on your adoption! It is a road that DH and I plan to travel very soon.

I think that China's age minimum used to be higher. I want to say that it was 35 at one point, with 30 being the minimum if the parents would accept a "special needs" child (which could be something as minor as a cleft palate).

We're seriously considering Korea. India was a serious consideration as well, but they want "proof of infertility" :confused3 Not everyone who chooses to adopt happens to be infertile. Look at Angelina Jolie...she may or may not be...clearly that is not her impetus for adopting.

Ethiopia's international adoption program is also really coming together lately. The agency that we are going to use added Ethiopia to their list of countries last year I believe.

Good luck with your adoption as well! Hopefully one of you has adoption reimbursement through work. I used to (not anymore), and DH doesn't. Too bad...that really would have helped out!

Shes a remarkable woman, a true example to others.

Good on her for adopting a second child.

Shes also good at putting her money where her mouth is. :cool1:

Congrats to her... I like her, a lot. And I'm so happy that she is such a good person, and so selfless! Looks like Maddox has a playmate!

I like the Korean program a little more then China's due to the fact that the children are in foster homes and it is very one on one. The majority (not all) adoptees from China are in orphanges. The one weird thing about the Korean program is that you have to be within their weight chart to adopt. They do not adopt to "overweight" or obese individuals. The other thing about the Korean program is that their medical standards are the same as the U.S. so the children are extremely healthy.

I've not looked into the Ethopian program because there are not many agencies that offer it here in Missouri. The other program we considered was Guatemala, but as of lately the red tape to adopt in Guatemala has seriously turned us off. I know a woman who had to get a U.S. Senator involved in order to get her children. Very frustrating.

We are not infertile (that we know of) so the Indian program wouldn't work for us either.

One of our old neighbors adopted from China rather than Korea because she exceeded weight limit for Korea. Strange!

Ethiopia seems to offer wonderful pre-placement care to the children. Children are treasured in Ethiopia. There are just so many AIDS orphans there that the need for adoptive families is great right now. The agency that we are using is only for FL, New England and NJ, but perhaps they could steer you in the direction of an agency in your area that does Ethiopian adoptions. The agency is called Wide Horizons for Children. A lot of my friends have done their international adoptions through them. Other than my neighbor who adopted from China, everyone else has adopted through the Korea program and been very happy with it. The Ethiopia program is new to this agency w/in the last year or so I think, so perhaps it will become more popular with agencies in other areas as well.

Congrats to Angelina and her lucky new baby (and to Maddox on his baby sister)! :)
